SMALLPOX
BY FRANCHESKA EPPS New England 1776 during the revolutionary war. There was news that a epidemic was going through town. And everyone thought it was the British’s fault for leaving this sickness that got them all sick . The people infected with the disease were covered with bumps that caused pain and aches and people were all looking for a cure to take this sickness away from their town. They went to any doctor’s to cure this disease, but whatever doctor they went to they said they didn’t know how to cure this disease or know what it was. But one doctor knew it was smallpox! Dr Edward Jenner. President George washington decided to have his soldiers given the smallpox vaccine this saved many lives. Smallpox is a deadly disease that can be treated.
History
I can probably tell by the look on your faces your thinking what is smallpox? Well smallpox is an infection caused by a virus called variola and their are two types; variola major and variola minor. Well did you know it has been a greatly feared disease throughout history? It has been responsible for huge epidemics worldwide. Smallpox started in Africa in 10,000bc and was spread by merchants through trading with other people. Smallpox even reached Europe in the 6th Century which was really fast. People even bought smallpox over with them when they came to America. In 1721 almost half of the people in boston got it. 40% percent of the native population in America died and 15% more died during 1720 1721 in Philadelphia and New York. President George washington also got smallpox and survived. Smallpox was a spreadable disease and infected even important people. One more thing the second thing I can teach others is how to tell If someone has it.
A smallpox cell Causes
I bet wondering what the cause is? well did you know that in 1776 New England was struck with smallpox related to the revolutionary war. British troops left smallpox behind them. And the americans accused them of spreading the disease. New england soldiers returning from a failed canada expedition and brought smallpox with them. I can’t believe this but 2,000 men out of 8,000 men fell ill so george washington had his soldiers be vaccinated. The vaccination was made available to the public. Did you know you could catch smallpox from cuts, sores, coughing, sneezing ,books, blankets, utensils, and other things the person with the disease used. It could enter through the respiratory (breathing ) tract. It even moves through the bloodstream.Would it have been prevented. This makes me think that the cause could have been prevented if it wasn’t spread across the world. Symptoms If you had smallpox you would feel fatigue, high fever, aching, blisters, chills, headache, backache. Also nausea & vomiting are some of the symptoms. People with smallpox would get a bumpy rash and it appears on the face and hand, then it would spread to the abdomen and back. The rashes would fill with a clear fluid and over a period of ten to twelve days and turn into pus. The bumps would eventually form scabs and fall off leaving a small pit that would become a scar. Death from smallpox was caused from complications like bacteria getting into the open skin lesions or pneumonia, bone infection,or other diseases. you can be blind or have compromised vision. Did the signs show super quickly,This makes me think that this is a contagious. Cure Did you know that people in AD 590 thought they could pray to the god you HoaLong and get better because he was the god of recovery? The Chinese were the first to introduce protective measures against smallpox. Even people were inoculated with pus taken from people with the mild form of the disease. There was no cure for smallpox it was best to keep a patient comfortable and wait for the disease to die off on its own. Was there a vaccination? Yes. Dr. Edward Jenner took some cowpox pus from a sore on a milkmaid. He then scratched a patient of his called James with the pus and then gave James some smallpox pus to infect him but he did not get infected. 1796 was his first successful vaccination, anyone who got the smallpox vaccine became immune to the virus. It worked on other people as well which makes me think the cure saved many people. This is what smallpox looked like Conclusion Present day as james and his mother went to the doctors to get a vaccination from smallpox . So he would be immune from smallpox and then james said ‘’I wonder who came up with the cure .Well the doctor said ‘’We should be glad that edward jenner found out the cure and we can use it today’’ . And then james left the office after he got his shot. Works Cited Early health and medicine.Bobbie kalman 1991 crabtree publishing.
