Prep -12 News Every day counts - school attendance We all want our students to get a great education, and the building blocks for a great education begin with students coming to school each and every day. Missing school can have a major impact on a child’s future – a student missing one day a fortnight will miss four full weeks by the end of the year. By Year 10 they’ll have missed more than a year of school. There is no safe number of days for missing school – each day a student misses puts them behind, and can affect their educational outcomes. Coming to school every day is vital, but if for any reason your child must miss school, there are things we can do together to ensure they don’t fall behind: Speak with your child’s classroom teacher and find out what work your child needs to do to keep up. Develop an absence learning plan with the teacher and ensure your child completes the plan. Remember, every day counts. If your child must miss school, speak with the classroom teacher as early as early as possible. Student Information sheets Student Details information sheets for each child will be coming home in the next couple of weeks for you to indicate any changes. Please check thoroughly and return to the office as soon as possible. To ensure our photo permissions are up to date please return all the forms. AUTHORITY TO PUBLISH PHOTOGRAPH IN MEDIA Page 4 MUST be completed for EACH child with a YES or NO. *The college has a range of advertising materials that are regularly updated. We also have a number of publications that are distributed to college members and the wider community including publication of the College newsletter on the internet. Articles are regularly submitted to local papers about many of these activities. In all of the above, photos featuring students are used. Abestos Management From 1 March 2014, new laws will mean that parents can be fined for not sending students to school without an acceptable reason. If you’re having attendance issues with your child, please let your classroom teacher (Primary) or Year Level Coordinator or Student Wellbeing Coordinator (Secondary) know so we can work together to get your child to school every day. Dear Parent As Part of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development’s Health and Safety Management Plan, new labelling will be installed at our school. The labels remind people to contact school reception prior to undertaking any works at the school, to ensure they have up-to-date information from the school’s asbestos register. Asbestos, which was used extensively in building materials in the past but is now banned – is considered safe unless damaged or in poor condition. The new labels form part of a comprehensive program to ensure Victorian government schools remain safe. Children’s safety is our number one priority. That is why we are taking this extra step as a precaution. Kind Regards Jo Petraitis Regional Manager Parents arrived later in the afternoon and were met by their sons and daughters along with our College captains before a short welcoming address by the principal, Mrs Hamilton. They were then treated to an exhibition of the game tchoukball, which is a combination of European handball and basketball. This unusual sport is also a longheld tradition at Carwatha and is always enjoyed by our Year 7 students who play in mixed teams in their form groups. At the conclusion of the tchoukball exhibition, families were treated to a barbecue prepared for them by some of the current Year 8 students and the College captains. This provided the opportunity for parents to mingle with staff members, to meet their child’s teachers and to discuss how their children had started the year. The final part of the evening was the information and distribution session for the iPads. Special thanks must go to Mr Reuben Kwong, the Year 7 Co-ordinator, and his assistant, Ms Breanna Andrew, for all the time and effort they put into the organisation of this very special event. Kevin Fahey Teaching and Learning Leader Year 12 Guest Speaker Community VICTORIAN SCHOOL OF LANGUAGES ENROLMENT IN LANGUAGE CLASSES FOR STUDENTS On Thursday the 27th of February, year 12 students had the privilege of being addressed by child psychologist, Dr Michael Carr-Gregg. Dr Carr-Gregg is a frequent guest on the morning television program Sunrise and has written multiple developmental books such as; ‘Surviving Year 12’ and ‘Surviving Adolescents’. His presentation was about ‘How to Survive year 12’. The psychologist spoke on a range of topics including; what to expect from the year to come and how to manage it, how long to study for, how long we should sleep at night, ways to get to sleep faster, ways in which we can stay motivated while we are studying, how to control personal time, such as social media and television and overall, how to balance all of these aspects in our busy year. Dr Carr-Gregg’s presentation was beneficial to everyone and there wasn’t anyone who wasn’t listening intently and taking mental notes, including the teachers. As a result of this session with Dr Carr-Gregg, this year feels like less of a struggle because we now know how to handle and balance everything so it’s not as overwhelming as we first anticipated.
