Missouri
Compromise
1820
Henry Clay
the “Great Compromiser”
Proposed the Missouri Compromise
This compromise settled the conflict
between slave states & free states when
Missouri wanted to join the Union as a
slave state in 1819. If admitted as a slave
state, it would have upset the balance of
11 slave states & 11 free states and given
the South the majority in the Senate.
Missouri joined the United States as
a slave state.
Maine joined the United States as a
free state.
Clay drew an imaginary line at the
36° 30’N parallel
Kept a balance
in Congress
Equal number
of slave &
free states
Settled the conflict
between slave & free
states for 30 years
(the southern border of Missouri)
Slavery was allowed in any new states
South of this line, and NOT allowed in
any new states North of this line
