and the world.
We are The University of Texas at San Antonio.
We are Roadrunners——and we are you.
Our 30,000 students can
choose from over
130 degree programs.
We Are
San Antonio
UTSA is located in the nation’s seventh-largest city
and Texas’ top tourist destination, San Antonio.
Home to the Alamo, other Spanish missions and a
rich history of diverse cultures, the city is an amazing
environment in which to learn, discover and grow.
Whether you take classes at the Main Campus or
Downtown Campus, as a UTSA student, you can
take advantage of all that the Alamo City has to offer.
Main Campus
The Main Campus is the hub of UTSA, where
Roadrunners discover an exciting community with
bustling activity occurring almost 24/7. At the foot
of the Texas Hill Country but within walking distance
of La Cantera’s beautiful outdoor mall and Six Flags
Fiesta Texas, the Main Campus enjoys a scenic
landscape with the conveniences of a major city.
Students here can always be found studying late into
the night for an exam, cheering on the basketball team
in the Convocation Center or playing sand volleyball
with friends. With four residence halls, the Main
Campus is where 3,700 Roadrunners live, eat and
sleep each school year. Another 5,000 students live
within walking distance of campus.
4
Downtown Campus
The Downtown Campus adds to the beauty of the
Alamo City with its modern architecture and is a
sight to admire as you drive through downtown.
Just a stone’s throw away from the River Walk and
El Mercado, the campus is located in the heart of
San Antonio’s vibrant social and cultural scenes.
Over 6,400 students choose to take classes on the
Downtown Campus, where you can complete all of
your core classes or enroll in one of 19 undergraduate
and eight graduate degree programs which can be
completed here in their entirety.
HemisFair Park Campus
The HemisFair Park Campus is home to the Institute
of Texan Cultures (ITC), which hosts exhibits and live
performances and is a wonderful place to learn about
the cultural history and traditions of the Lone Star
State. As a Smithsonian Affliliate, the ITC benefits
from artifacts and educational programs shared by an
exclusive group of member museums. The HemisFair
Park Campus is positioned directly across from the
Alamodome, the 65,000-seat home of Roadrunner
Football, kicking off in fall 2011.

Degrees of Success
In your pursuit of higher knowledge, UTSA’s eight
colleges——Architecture, Business, Education and
Human Development, Engineering, Liberal and
Fine Arts, Public Policy, Sciences and Honors——
collaborate to provide you with an education of
excellence you expect from a premier national
university. We offer a curriculum that promotes
critical thinking and problem-solving, so that our
students graduate with the skills and confidence
they need in today’s knowledge-based economy.
Many of our graduates who have studied
pre-med or pre-law have been accepted at
esteemed medical and law schools, while those
who wish to continue their studies in other fields
have been accepted at major grad schools
around the country and UTSA’s own Graduate
School. Others who were prepared to enter
the workforce have been hired at Fortune 500
companies. Our respected faculty will equip you
with the academic tools to carve your place in
the world——whatever your ambition.

for cross-disciplinary approaches with real-world
applications. We are UTSA’s largest college, and
we are known for our core curriculum teaching and
helping all students prepare for their studies. We
boast an esteemed faculty who have won national

new ideas through the college’s annual research
conference, where students present their own
research papers, multimedia projects, artwork,
creative writing and musical performances.
We Are the College of
Architecture utsa.edu/coa
You have always been drawing, drafting, planning; a
dreamer with a vision spanning the great architecture
of the past to the built environments of the future.
You desire to build your legacy to the world or design
homes and offices in your own distinct style. You
envision building magnificent high-rise complexes or
working to preserve historic structures. If this is the
blueprint of your dreams and ambitions, the sky’s the
limit at UTSA’s College of Architecture.

“I’ve cherished the opportunity to perform several
leading roles. Singing opera with an orchestra
has taught me so much about musicianship and
cooperation among performers.”
Bronwyn White, junior, music,
winner of the Concerto and Aria Competition
We are located at the Downtown Campus and provide
the perfect laboratory for in-depth exploration of San
Antonio’s architecture and construction of the built environment. We also provide study-abroad opportunities in
Italy, Spain, France and Argentina, giving you the opportunity to live and study in a different culture. For students
interested in continuing their studies, we offer the
professional master of architecture program, as well as
degrees that will prepare you to teach, conduct research,
or pursue careers in urban and regional planning.

The Texas Sustainable Energy Research Institute,
housed in the College of Engineering, is getting
a $50 million infusion from CPS Energy to
help position San Antonio as a leader in
renewable energy.
“The most
important revelation
I’ve had as a freshman is the
individualized attention I received from
my professors. I’m encouraged to ask
questions and my professors stay
after class to help me understand the
material. The academic support from
faculty is refreshing.”
Peter Serna, freshman, biology,
Rising Roadrunner Scholar

students in the biological sciences, mathematics and computer science. We offer unparalleled
opportunities to get hands-on experience in labo-
ratory research through our training programs for
undergraduates. Student researchers have access
to dedicated faculty and the latest technology like

images at a resolution of less than one ten-billionth of
a meter. We also train students to become effective
educators through the Generating Educational
Excellence in Mathematics and Science (GE2MS)
Teaching Program.
We Are the College of
Engineering utsa.edu/coe
You want to shape the technology of tomorrow.
You’re ready for a career as an engineer, or perhaps

and prepare for an exciting career, whether in San
Antonio, New York or the global economies of London
or Singapore.

the nation. We hold international accreditation from
the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools
of Business (only 5 percent of business schools
worldwide receive this accreditation). We offer innovative international programming, including a bilingual
business certificate program and immersion programs
in countries such as Brazil, Spain and Morocco. We
are second in the nation in graduating Hispanic undergraduates and our MBA program is ranked in the top
ten nationally by BusinessWeek, Hispanic Business,
and Princeton Review.
“I’ve had the best collegiate experience at the
College of Business. They’ve provided me with
countless resources from extra tutors in class to
professional mentors. I’m grateful for the leadership
opportunities I gained through student involvement
and international studies abroad.”
Ryanne Vela ’10, international business
We Are the College of
Public Policy utsa.edu/copp
You might have an ambition to serve your community,
perhaps by representing your hometown in Congress
or working in the criminal justice system. Or you may
possess an altruistic spirit that will lead you to work
with nonprofit organizations, and your work will impact
all areas of our society. Whether you plan to advocate
for human rights or write government legislation,
12
through the College of Public Policy, you will acquire
the brainpower and tools to shape the world we live in.

organizations. Our faculty engage in innovative
policy research, while also maintaining close ties to
community leaders and issues.

assisted students competing for top
national scholarships and fellowships. Just

two Rhodes finalists from the Class of 2010.
We Are the College of
Education and Human Development utsa.edu/coehd
“I believe student teaching is the most
challenging but most rewarding part of
the teaching program. It is where theory
meets practice. I am well supported by
my UTSA supervisor and peers. After
this semester, I can proudly say that I
am ready to become a teacher.”
Alicia Maldonado, senior, teacher certification
You are destined to be a leader, a teacher, a mentor
or counselor. You want to transform lives by preparing
individuals to reach their highest potential. You are
ready to lead boldly and courageously and to assume
the responsibility of educating America’s future doctors,
political leaders, engineers, scientists, artists and
humanitarians. You are the one and your time is now.
We are leaders of innovative teaching practices, professional development, technology enhancement, health,
and binational/bicultural issues, and have secured more
than $15 million in research and grant funding. We are
one of the largest providers of educators in Texas and
boast a 97 percent pass rate on the Teacher Certification Exams, one of the highest in the state. We offer our
own study-abroad programs to China, Thailand, Mexico
and Peru, allowing you to experience for yourself educational systems around the world.
We Are the
Honors College utsa.edu/honors
You plan to study at UTSA and want to broadly
develop your intellect as you mature from an inquisitive scholar to a possible Nobel Prize winner. You seek
small classes that promote discussion with your fellow
students and professors. You enjoy an intellectual
challenge and growth as you study among other academically talented students from diverse backgrounds.
We offer Honors students in all the UTSA colleges
priority registration so you can create your ideal class
schedule. We award 80 students a Presidential
Honors Scholarship each year, and another 60 to 70
students receive awards/scholarships. We prepare you
for national scholarship and fellowship competitions.
The Honors College is open to students of all majors.
Admission to the Honors College is competitive and based on class rank, ACT or SAT scores, an essay and recommendations. Threshold requirements for incoming freshmen are a composite (CR + M) SAT of 1200 or higher, a composite ACT
of 27 or higher, and/or graduation in the top 10 percent of the high school class. The Honors College applies a holistic review approach to student admission. Therefore, students who do not meet threshold requirements may still gain admission
if they offer a compelling reason why they should be part of the program, just as students who meet those requirements
are not guaranteed admission.

UTSA’s Air Force ROTC Detachment
was recognized with the Right of Line
Award as the best in the nation.
“During my
study abroad in Italy, we
would sit outside to sketch Roman buildings and fountains and we would see a building
we studied back home. Embedding myself in
such a rich environment of language, culture, and
customs gave me a different perspective and a
better understanding of the history of architecture.”
Shreya Patel, senior, architecture
We Are
Study Abroad utsa.edu/studyabroad
No matter which college or major you choose, you can
participate in one of UTSA’s study-abroad programs.
Spending a semester overseas can enhance your
education from a global perspective by introducing
you to different people, cultures and educational
systems—and broaden your awareness of the world
we live in. Who knows? You might even make a
lifelong friend from Spain or Thailand.
We Are
UTSA students can take advantage of one of the
exchange agreements (meaning you study in another
country but pay UTSA tuition) with universities in
England, Japan, Mexico, Canada, Denmark, South
Korea, Peru, Sweden and Turkey. But we also offer
faculty-led and affiliated study-abroad programs in
many other countries. UTSA students have studied
architecture in Italy, flora and fauna in Costa Rica,
and archaeology in Belize. You can, too.
Pre-Professional Studies
Pre-Health utsa.edu/hpo
For students aspiring to continue in a health-related
profession (medicine, dentistry, nursing, physical
therapy, occupational therapy or pharmacy), the
Health Professions Office should be one of the first
offices to visit once enrolled. Staff provides advising
and support to students pursuing health professions
and assists them in assuring they are fulfilling professional school admission requirements. The office also
provides assistance with the application processes
for medical and dental school.
16
Pre-Law utsa.edu/ilpa
Created as a partnership between UTSA and The
University of Texas School of Law, the Institute for
Law and Public Affairs (ILPA) prepares upper-level

UTSA students benefit from the latest
technology, including online file storage
(so you never have to worry about lost flash
drives) and campuswide wireless printing.
Through the university’s Quality Enhancement Plan,
all UTSA students learn to analyze and interpret
real data––such as student loan interest
charges––boosting the value of your degree.
We Are
Academic Support and Career Guidance
Libraries utsa.edu/libraries
We have books, yes—1.8 million print and electronic volumes between the Main Campus and Downtown
Campus libraries—but so much more! Our priority is to provide you with personalized research assistance to
complete your class projects, so our librarians are available to answer your questions online via e-mail, text or
IM, as well as in person. Students love the Information Commons in the newly renovated John Peace Library on
the Main Campus, with its 185 computer workstations. You can also check out a laptop for a class presentation.
If you need to get away from the buzz of activity, we also have quiet study areas and group study rooms. When
you finish studying, check out a new-release DVD to take home with you. But if you do need to pull an all-nighter,
the John Peace Library is open 24 hours a day on weekdays and offers weekend hours, too.
University Career Center utsa.edu/ucc
The University Career Center equips you with the
skills necessary to make positive career decisions
throughout your education at UTSA. Group mock
interviews are also offered with companies that recruit
at the Main and Downtown campuses, such as USAA,
Tesoro, Valero and State Farm Insurance. The Career
Center also provides the following services:
• Workshops and events including employer information sessions, skills training and etiquette dinners
• Job listings for part-time positions, internships and
co-ops, as well as full-time career positions
• A personal career-planning course for students who have not determined an academic major or who
need direction regarding major and career pursuits.

The Tomás Rivera Center
for Student Success (TRC) utsa.edu/trc
It’s not unusual to start college as an undeclared major.
The Tomás Rivera Center for Student Success works
with students who are undecided about their major and
can assist you in making your decision. In addition, the
TRC provides several academic support programs to
ensure you achieve your educational goals:
• Supplemental Instruction is a series of weekly study
sessions for difficult courses, guided by students who
successfully completed them.
• The Quantitative Tutoring Lab includes free tutoring in
more than 90 subjects.
• Academic Coaching provides one-on-one study skills
assistance to students and provides individualized plans.
We Are
Support for New Students
The Colleges’ Freshman Advising Center (CFAC) utsa.edu/cfac
Even if you have a declared major or have selected a college but not a specific major, you might have a lot of
questions. You might be wondering, “How do I know which business class I should take?” or “What prerequisites do I need before next year?” It’s OK—the CFAC will guide you in the right direction.
Summer Common Reading Experience utsa.edu/commonread
As part of your first year at UTSA, you participate in the Summer Common Reading Experience. This program
allows new students to begin building an academic community around a common book. Information on the
current book is distributed to students when they attend orientation. Activities during UTSA’s week of welcome,
also known as Roadrunner Days, and the fall semester will center on themes and ideas from the book.
Learning Communities and Freshman Seminar Programs utsa.edu/lc
The Learning Communities Program helps ease the transition to college. In the fall semester, first-year students
are enrolled in up to three Core Curriculum classes with the same group of 25 students. Every student in the
program will be enrolled in a Freshman Seminar to provide frequent interaction with faculty and acquire the
resources for academic success, and connect with their peers.
21
We Are Campus Life
Away from the confines of the classroom and
the hush-hush of the library is a boisterous
and rowdy campus life that invites you to enjoy
a world of new friendships, camaraderie and
laughter. You will discover that UTSA is like a
city——one that never sleeps with the constant
activities of sports, music, arts, dining, special
events and recreation——happening all around
you. We’re certain you will stay on course to
achieve your educational goals; however, keep
in mind that this is your campus and this is
your UTSA, and we wouldn’t want you to miss
out on all the fun and excitement that campus
life has to offer.
23
We Are
Housing utsa.edu/housing
Living on campus is a great opportunity
to become fully engaged with the campus
community. In addition to the convenience
of having a furnished residence just a short
walk away from class, students who live on
campus typically earn better grades, are
more likely to graduate on time and are more
satisfied with their overall college experience.
You can live on or off campus. If you choose
to live on-site, the university offers a variety of
living facilities and comfortable apartments.
Because space is limited, an application is
required and is available at utsa.edu/housing.
As soon as you receive your UTSA ID, use it
to access the application once it is available
from the Housing website.
Chisholm Hall offers the true freshman experience to 500
students in a traditional residence hall style. With one- or
two-person rooms to choose from, Chisholm sets itself
apart by offering private bathrooms, themed wings and an
Academic Rebate Program.
Chaparral Village and Laurel Village are on-campus
residence communities that house 1,700 students. The
suite-style living offers you a private bedroom in either a twobedroom or four-bedroom layout. Suites are fully furnished
and include bathrooms, a living room area and kitchenette.
University Oaks is on-campus apartment housing, and
accommodates 1,456 students. Students choose from six
different floor plans for one-bedroom, two-bedroom or fourbedroom units. With a full kitchen and no meal plan requirements, University Oaks offers independent living with the
benefits and conveniences of living on campus.
“Living in Chaparral Village
was definitely a life-changing
experience. I was able to
make friends quickly, become
involved on campus as well as
be in walking distance of my
classes. UTSA housing felt like
a home away from home.”
Alexis Colton, sophomore,
criminal justice and political science
We Are
Dining utsa.edu/dining
It’s no secret that college students need
plenty of nourishment to keep their active
bodies and brains functioning at peak
performance. So no matter where you go

meal with friends——the options are plentiful
to satisfy anyone’s taste buds.

Financial Aid utsa.edu/aid
Orientation utsa.edu/orientation
More than 70 percent of UTSA students receive some
type of financial aid, so don’t let the thought of not
being able to afford a quality education prevent you
from applying. We invite you to thoroughly review
the Financial Aid website to become familiar with the
numerous opportunities, such as grants, loans, scholarships and work study, that are available. There are also
a number of special programs that can be of assistance, including the Hazelwood Exemption, Education
Aid Exemption and International Aid Programs.
ability of UTSA. Topics and services include financial
aid overviews and workshops on how to complete
the FAFSA. Visit the Outreach link on our website for
a calendar of events in your area. Presentations are
offered in English and Spanish.
In order to be considered for financial aid at UTSA,
you are required to complete the Free Application for
Federal Student Aid at fafsa.ed.gov. Please keep in mind
that students are awarded on a first-come, first-served
basis, subject to the availability of funds, academic
performance and demonstrated financial need. Students
must be admitted to the university in order to be
awarded financial aid. We strongly encourage you to
submit your FAFSA before March 15.
Work Study: An employment opportunity, usually on
campus, for students who qualify based on their FAFSA.
Students with the greatest financial need are often the
least likely to receive it because of a gap in communication about financial aid resources. With that in mind,
we have developed a Financial Aid Outreach program
in which financial aid representatives work directly with
students and parents to educate them on the afford-
Key Terms
FAFSA: Free Application for Federal Student Aid.
This is required for most types of financial aid.
Grants: Funds that do not have to be repaid.
Loans: Funds that must be repaid with interest. A variety
of student and parent loans are available on the UTSA
Financial Aid website.
UTSAccess: A program offered to first-time UTSA
freshmen who have graduated from high school in
2012, apply and are admitted to UTSA by March 15,
are Texas residents, and whose family adjusted gross
income and wage earnings are $30,000 or less and
whose assets are less than $50,000. UTSAccess
provides grants and/or scholarships to cover tuition
and mandatory fees for four years.
Orientation—or Roadrunner Roundup as we like to
call it—is mandatory for first-time freshmen and all new
students with less than 30 college hours earned after
high school graduation. It is a great opportunity to take
a detailed tour of the campus and meet professors,
current students and new Roadrunners like you who
have the same questions and excitement about their
first semester at UTSA. Orientation gives you a chance
to get acquainted and comfortable with your new
“home away from home.” The final day of orientation
is dedicated to advising and registering for your first
semester of classes.
Are Mom and Dad interested in learning about UTSA?
They can join you by attending family orientation, a
program designed to introduce family members to the
UTSA community.
Roadrunner Roundup is also a preview for living on
campus because you have the option to stay in
Chaparral Village. By the first day of classes, you will
already know where to meet for class, grab lunch and
study with just the right amount of distractions. Once
you have these basics down, attend Roadrunner Camp
to learn even more about UTSA’s spirit and traditions.
Visitor Centers utsa.edu/visitor
The best way to learn about what UTSA has to offer and
to feel the pulse of campus life is to experience it for
yourself. That’s why we invite you to come take a guided
tour of our campuses. We’re sure once you see what we
have to offer, UTSA is where you will want to begin the
next phase of your life.
Walking tours are available at both our Downtown and
Main campuses Monday through Friday. In addition,
Saturday tours and early evening tours are available
on our Main Campus on select days during the fall and
spring semesters. Registering online at utsa.edu/visitor
is the only way to reserve a spot and assure that your
preferred tour time is available. By registering online, we
will know when to expect you, and our on-site admissions
staff will be best prepared to answer your questions.
Scholarships utsa.edu/scholarships
There are many scholarships available on the
Scholarships website that can help you pay for tuition.
Although it might take a little research to find which
one might benefit you the most, it’s worth taking the time
to do so. The General Scholarship Application,
a single form used for over 60 scholarships, is available
at applytexas.org. We also recommend that you
complete the FAFSA to demonstrate need, which is a
prerequisite for most scholarships. Students must be
admitted to UTSA in order to be awarded scholarships.
Common Scholarship Criteria:
• Academics only—GPA, SAT or ACT scores, ranking
in high school
• Need-based and academics—you must complete the
FAFSA to determine need
• Special eligibility requirements—major, residence and
high school
• A combination of any of the above
• Submit Essay Topic C through ApplyTexas
Must be admitted to The University of Texas at San Antonio by February 15 for scholarship consideration.
Check out the website to your college or department for unique scholarships offered only to students in your area of study.
