Learning the Yellow Lollipop Words
Climb the Ladder Arrange a group of words in a long vertical row. If your child says
every word without hesitation, he/she has “climbed the ladder.” If a word is missed,
practice them and then try the “climb” again.
Learning the Orange Lollipop Words
Memory – Show your child 2 or more words. Take them away and see if he/she can
remember what they were.
Word Snap – Place all word cards in a pile face down. Each person takes a turn to flip
the card. The first person to say the word correctly wins the card.
Learning the Light Green Lollipop Words
Jump to it – Place 5 – 10 sight word cards on the ground. Tell the child three words at a
time and have them jump to each of the words. If correct, they get to pick up the word.
Baseball – Make three bases in a room in your home. Show a word to your child and if
read correctly, your child moves to “first base.” Continue until they return to “Home”
base.
Learning the Dark Green Lollipop Words
Use the Word in a Sentence – Let your child begin by using one of the words in a
sentence. As his/her confidence grows encourage the use of more than one sight word
in a sentence.
Review - When your child has moved on to the next set of words continue to practise
the previous words. Mix in a few of the previously mastered words with the new set and
play any of the word games that they like to play.
Learning the Pink Lollipop Words
Find Me – Using four sight words at a time, flash a word and then place them one at a
time, face down in a row. Say one of the sight words at a time and ask your child to find
the word. They turn a card up and, if correct, get a point (gummy bears work well for
points!)
Hockey – If your child reads a word correctly, the parent makes a net using their hands
and the child takes a shot into the net. If the word is read incorrectly, the word is put
into the penalty box to try again later.
Learning the Purple Lollipop Words
Fast Flash – Flash the words and see how many they can read instantly. For children
who enjoy being timed, bring out a stopwatch. Try to beat your best time.
Bingo - Place all cards on the table with the word facing up. The parent and the child
each have their own markers. (eg. blocks, bingo chips etc…) One partner will read a word.
The other must look for the word and mark it. If the person selects the wrong word the
other player can mark it. The person with the most markers wins!
Learning the Blue Lollipop Words
Clue – Orally make up a sentence and leave out the sight word. Have your child look
through their words to select the correct word to fit the sentence.
Beat the Clock – When your child knows the words quite will, but just need a review, see
how many words can be said in 30 seconds or even a minute. Keep track and periodically
try and see if the old “record” can be beat.
Review - When your child has moved on to the next set of words continue to practise
the previous words. Mix in a few of the previously mastered words with the new set and
play any of the word games they know.
