Dog Exercise Brochure 1 - West Coast to Cape

Taking your dog to the beach Many of us love taking our dogs to the beach and our dogs love it too. Taking your dog to the beach is o en a great way for both you and your dog to get exercise, and is o en also a great way for both you and your dog to meet and socialise with other people and their dogs. Other than beach areas in conserva on reserves (Leeuwin- Naturaliste Na onal Park and Meelup Regional Park), you can take your dog to the beach along most of the coast in the City of Busselton all of the me, and to most of the rest of the coast most of the me. Before taking your dog to the beach, though, there are a few things you need to be aware of: 
There are some beach areas where dogs are allowed all of the me. These are iden fied as dog exercise areas. 
There are some beach areas where dogs are not allowed at all at any me. These are iden fied as dog prohibited areas. 
There are some beach areas where dogs are allowed most of the me, but not during the main part of the day (between 9am and 5pm) during summer (from 1 December to 28 February). In these areas, dogs are allowed off lead the rest of the me. These are iden fied as seasonal areas. 

Informa on on which beach areas fall into which category can be obtained from the available brochures (of which this is one of four), or on the City’s website. If your dog is allowed on the beach, you are allowed to let it off the lead. Your dog is not allowed off the lead, though, un l you are actually on the beach. Your dog must be kept on a lead at all other mes, including on footpaths and dual-use paths (note that there are also an extensive number of parks and ovals iden fied as dog exercise areas). 
Even when your dog is off the lead, it must be under ‘effec ve control’ at all mes. If you cannot see your dog, your dog cannot hear you, or does not come when you call, it is not under effec ve control. If at any me you do not have your dog under effec ve control, put it back on a lead and make sure it is being held by someone who can control the dog. 
You must always have a lead with you when you are out with your dog. A lead should not be more than 2.0 metres long. 
You must always clean up a er your dog. Whilst the City does provide poo bag dispensers in some loca ons and refills them regularly, at the end of the day, you are responsible for making sure you have a bag and can clean up a er your dog. 
Hopefully, you love your dog. Not everyone else will, and some people can find encounters with dogs very in mida ng. Please be considerate and conscious of that, and don’t let your dog approach other people, especially children, unless you are confident the other person is comfortable with that happening. 
If in doubt, keep your dog on a lead. Thank you DOG MANAGEMENT
