Congratulations on
making it half way
through the Spring
Semester!
By now you probably
have been in your city
long enough that you
know where all the
best
restaurants,
bars, and clubs are.
Hopefully you have
also had the chance
to tour other cities in
your country and perhaps
surrounding
countries as well.
WORLD
For some of you, your
program may be getting close to the end
while others still have
months to go. Either
way, we at the office
hope that you were
able to participate in
the winter festivals
that took place in
your country and that
you are also able to
take advantage of the
various
upcoming
Spring festivals and
holidays .
Whether or not your
program has a mid
semester break we
hope you are still able
to find the time to
start or continue traveling.
In this issue we will
highlight some upcoming spring festivals around the world.
We will also be covering UCR’s homecoming week which included the bonfire,
the basketball game
against UCI, and last
but not least, the
Heat concert.

CHERRY BLOSSOM FESTIVAL –Japan
(end of March—early May)
Water Festival –Southeast Asia, vari-
ous countries (April)
The annual Cherry Blossom Festival in Japan signals the blooming of the sakura trees. People
gather at sites where the trees are in bloom to
hold cherry blossom viewing parties beneath the
trees. These parties may be held during the day
or at night and can be quite popular drawing
large crowds of people.
Although originating in Japan, immigration and
interest has created cherry viewing parties in
other countries. Some countries with popular
cherry blossom festivals include Australia, Brazil,
Germany, Korea, and the United States.
The “Water Festival” as it is known by foreigners corresponds to the New Year in various southeast Asian countries including
Thailand, Burma, Cambodia, and Laos. It is
celebrated around April and gets the name
“Water Festival” because locals are seen
dousing others with water. Traditionally the
act of sprinkling others with water was a
sign of respect and purification to bring
good luck into the new year; however, since
the festival falls in one of the hottest
months locals began dousing each other, as
well as passersby, with water.
Bendigo Easter Festival—Australia (Easter
Monday)
Since 1871, this annual festival located in Bendigo,
Victoria includes a procession with the longest imperial dragon in the world, hundreds of floats, and thousands of participants. This is Australia’s longest running festival and can run anywhere from one to ten
days.

Homecoming at UCR
Homecoming week at UCR kicked off
with the bonfire in which UCI’s anteater mascot was burned in preparation for our game against them the following day. UCR defeated UCI in overtime right before the start of HEAT.
Performers at HEAT included headliners the Airborne Toxic Event, Mac
Miller, Secret Panda Society, Major
Lazer, among others and lasted until
midnight.
The Airborne Toxic Event at Heat
“Heat was fun. There were different stages
that you could walk to with various performers. People were crazy and it was very
crowded but otherwise it was a great concert.
And for once, it didn’t rain!”
