The Week Ahead 03rd November 2014

Glendower Lower School
“The Week Ahead”
Week beginning: 3rd November 2014
From Mr Tucker
The girls have worked extremely hard in this first half term and they all deserve some time away from
school to recharge their batteries and get ready for the extremely busy build up to Christmas which
starts after half term! Thank you all for meeting with the form teachers this week and I’m sure you found
these meetings both informative and useful. I hope you all manage to have a break over the next two
weeks and enjoy the sunshine we are promised!
From Reception
We would like to say how pleased we are with the children in this first half-term. They have all
settled in so well and the time has flown by. After half term we will be focusing on ng, v, y and x.
We will also be starting to write up our news, as part of developing our independent writing. It
would really help us if you could talk to your child about any significant events over the half-term
break which they might want to share with the class and write about.
In Maths we will be counting forwards and backwards to 20 and also focusing on number recognition and
formation.
In Understanding of the World and Art we will be finding out about Diwali and making Diva
lamps. We will also be finding out about bonfire night and how to keep safe during fireworks
night.
In PSED we will be thinking about celebrating what we are good at and how we are all good
at different things.
From Year 1
English: We will begin a new unit on poems about the senses. We will look at a poem about crossing the road
and discuss the importance of our senses. We will write a senses poem after guessing different sounds, tastes
and smells. We will also be looking at rhyming words. This week’s joins are lp and mp.
Maths: We will be looking at sequencing events, including days, months and seasons. We will also be doubling
amounts and numbers in a variety of contexts.
Seasonal Topic: We thought it would be relevant and fun to discuss the story of Guy Fawkes and health and
safety around fireworks. We will also be exploring fireworks in our Art lesson.
The children have worked so hard this half term, they really deserve this holiday! We hope you all have lots of
fun and a good rest. See you in November!
From Year 2
Firstly we would like to say have a wonderful half term. See you in two weeks.
English: After half term we will be exploring rhyme and looking at different poems. The girls will look at
onomatopoeia and alliteration and use these to write their own poem. They will also perform a poem at the end
of the week.
Maths: In maths we will applying our learning of addition and subtraction by working with money. We will look
at the different coins and how to count money, then move onto finding change. The girls will be learning how to
subtract mentally by counting up.
Science: We will start our new topic on Magnets and Springs. This week the girls will be learning that there are
forces between magnets and that magnets can attract (pull towards) and repel (push away from) each other. We
will be acting out the forces of magnets to show what happens when magnets are put together.
Please note: Lower School to Upper School Transition Meeting will take place on Wednesday 12 th
November at 6pm in the school Dining Hall. We look forward to seeing you then.
