I have been watching my son Montgomery play basketball on his sixth grade team. As I was watching his team this past Monday, I started thinking about my days of playing sixth grade basketball at Mill Ridge Elementary. I wasn't very good. But I remember our coach Mr. Tierney always saying, "Make the most of what you have." I did not have much in the way of talent, but I remember how motivating he was, and how I wanted to make the most of what I had. We know how that turned out...I'm here and not in the NBA. When it comes to stewarding your life, making the most of all you have and all that you are doesn't come down to just you. It comes down to "Christ in you..." Thankfully, the stewardship of life is not an endless list of chores, but an ever-increasing abundance of God's blessing on the persons who seek God earnestly, love God wholeheartedly, and follow God unreservedly. These things are not easy. There are so many obstacles in life that tend to obscure our view of God. I see stewardship as an opportunity to make the most of what I have. I think that is the great equalizer in the eyes of God. So, if you give 5, 50 or 500 dollars are you making the most with what you have? If you give 5, 50 or 500 hours toward community service, are you making the most of what you have? if you share 5, 50, or 500 of your spiritual gifts are you making the most of what you have? It is different for each of us. I do not believe God is some taskmaster who is looking for the same number from everybody. If you look at the various characters in Scripture, God is always looking for people to make the most of what they have...whether it is the rich young ruler or the widow who gave her pennies at the temple. Stewardship is not about beating ourselves up because we do not measure some unified standard. Stewardship is about each one of us "Making the most of what you have." Thank you Mr. Tierney...
