THE FASTEST DRYING LINSEED OIL PAINT

THE FASTEST DRYING LINSEED OIL PAINT
Linseed oil is a time-honoured, natural product which has been used by professional painters and merchants for centuries. Linseed oil
paint is a product obtained from oil flax. The flax is sown when the frost has receded. After flowering the crop is left to mature, before
being harvested with the aid of thrashing machines. The linseed oil is pressed from the flax seed and processed into oil paint, using
sustainable processes. In days of old the linseed oil was extracted at the mills. In the Netherlands, linseed oil is still produced at a number
of mills as a tourist attraction. An example of this is “ Molen De Passiebloem” in Zwolle.
OER linseed oil paint is the fastest drying linseed oil paint available on the market. OER linseed oil paint is easy to use and its finished
appearance leaves a subtle brushstroke lending character to your paintwork. Linseed oil paints provide durable protection for woodwork
and can be used for interior and exterior paintwork. OER linseed oil paints will protect timber for up to 6 years. OER linseed oil paints
are available in 20 heritage colours matching the authentic character of OER and that of the buildings on which they are used. For best
result, apply the oil paint in thin layers to bring out that beautiful, signature brushstroke. OER linseed may be experienced as a little
‘sluggish’ on the brush. This is a typical feature of authentic linseed oil paint.
• Important: Used towels containing linseed oil paint may self-combust due to
heat accumulation. Always hang out used towels to dry before disposing. Used
towels with linseed oil paint remnants may be disposed in a waste bin filled with
water to prevent spontaneous combustion.

HISTORY OF OER
According to legend Dutch master painter Jan Van Eyck (ca.1390-1441) was the inventor of linseed oil paint. In 15th century Holland,
linseed oil paints were predominantly used in art painting. In the early 19th century, the production of linseed oil paints started to develop on an industrial scale. Linseed oil paint was highly regarded by artists and house painters alike until about 1950. From the mid-20th
century onward linseed oil paints were rapidly abandoned by the trade in favour of alkyd based paints.
PRODUCTION OF LINSEED OIL
Linseed oil is obtained from the oil flax plant, a crop that has been cultivated for centuries. The flax is sown as soon as the frost has receded, generally from mid-March to early April. Around May the fields start to colour blue or white. After flowering the plant no longer grows
and is left to mature. By July / August the flax attains a golden/yellow glow and is now ready to be harvested with the aid of threshers. In
the Netherlands, a flax crop yields some 2,500 and 3,000 kg per hectare. Oil-containing flax holds approx. 35 - 40% linseed oil, which
translates as
approx. 875-1200 kg of linseed oil per hectare. This is the ‘crude’ linseed oil and it still requires a process of refining. In days bygone, the
linseed oil was extracted at the mill. A handful of mills in the Netherlands continue
to produce linseed oil as a tourist attraction. For example, “Molen De Passiebloem” in Zwolle.
OER LINSEED OIL PAINT
Chemistry
Solvent-borne industrial paints are based on alkyd resins. Linseed oil paints contain naturally drying oil as binder: this is the linseed oil
that is used in OER linseed oil paints. The curing process in both alkyd resins and linseed oil is oxidative, meaning that oxygen is caused
to react with the alkyd resin or oil by siccatives. However, with an alkyd-borne paint the cross-linking density is much higher than with
a linseed oil, which is why a linseed based paint is much more elastic and flexible than an alkyd-based product. OER linseed oil paints
(high gloss, satin gloss and primer), including base White and Transparent and all mixed colours using our colour paste. This is a low VOC
content and allows these products to be used both outdoors and indoors.
