Weekly News from Pelham City Schools March 7, 2016 SCHOOLS CELEBRATE READ ACROSS AMERICA WEEK In recognition of Dr. Seuss' birthday and Read Across America Week, students had a wacky week of themed dress-up days and activities to celebrate books and the joy of reading. At Valley Elementary and Valley Intermediate, students and teachers were seen in wild wigs, crazy socks and pajamas throughout the week. At Riverchase Middle, students studied the deeper meaning of several Seuss books in Reader's Theatre renditions of "The Sneetches", "What Was I Scared Of?", "My Many Colored Days", and others. MARK YOUR CALENDAR New Hours for Dinner Program The dinner program will now start a half an hour earlier at 4 pm and be offered Monday - Thursday when school is in session. This federally funded, after school meals program is open to all. Any child 18 and under can eat at no charge. Adults may purchase a meal for $4 (cash only). Spring Break Monday, March 28-Friday, April 1 Schools Closed Fine Arts Showcase Tuesday, April 5 at 6:00 pm Pelham High School Gym Set to the theme "Made in America", the showcase will feature musical performances, art work, culinary samples, and more. RIVERCHASE MIDDLE STUDENTS EXPLORE SCIENCE THROUGH HANDS-ON EXPERIMENTS 8th grade science students have recently had the chance to work through some real world experiments as they competed in the Science Olympiad and studied air pressure and energy. Students learned about air pressure doing a hands-on experiment with bottle rockets. They also incorporated energy principles and data interpretation to determine how many rubber bands it would take to give a Barbie doll a safe and thrilling bungee jump without hitting her head. Thirteen students participated in the Science Olympiad at UAB and and took 2nd Place in the "Food Science" and "Write it/ Do It" categories and 3rd Place in "Road Scholar" and "Disease Detectives" divisions. COUNTDOWN TO KINDERGARTEN This event will provide the opportunity to register students who will begin Kindergarten in the 2016-17 school year at Pelham Oaks Elementary or Pelham Ridge Elementary. Students are encouraged to attend the registration event to participate in a Kindergarten Readiness Screener. Valid Alabama Immunization Form (blue form) Proof of Age (birth certificate) Proof of Custody, if applicable (a copy of the court order must be submitted) Proof of Residence - All students must provide two of the following current residence verification documents: current utility bill or utility deposit receipt; lease agreement (listing occupants); payment receipt for rent or house payment (must include address); U.S Government communication to current address (examples - Social Security or Income Tax documents); property deed - parent/legal guardian must reside full-time in the residence.
