- SOME FACTS
PORT TRAFFIC CONTROL
The Port Traffic Control at the Ports of Stockholm is
open 24 hours a day. Contact Port Traffic Control regarding Advance notice of arrival, waste delivery, harbour
services needed, reports of loading/discharge and number of passengers.Advance notice of arrival must be
given at least 24 hours before arrival or when leaving
the previous harbour.
LOCKS AND BRIDGES
The Karl Johan Lock is open for traffic from 1st of May
to 31st of August daily 0700 to 2200.
And from 1st of September to 30th of October daily
0900 to 1700. (Only leisure and sightseeing crafts)
The Hammarby lock is open to commercial shipping
all year around 24 hours a day. Maximum ship size is
LOA 110 m, B 15 m and maximum draft is 5,6 m at MW.
The Ports of Stockholm operates the bridges. Bridge
opening must be requested 5 hours in advance and
confirmation to the Port Traffic Control centre 1 H
before arrival.
Two thirds of the land of Sweden is north of Stockholm.

MOORING
Ships with a length of 130 metres or less, are to be
moored by two linesmen serving one ship-end at a
time. When mooring at buoy, four linesmen will be
used.The Ports of Stockholm provides linesmen at a
fixed rate. Other companies, authorised by The Ports of
Stockholm, may also be used for the mooring of ships
at quays owned by the Port. Not more than three hawsers to each bollard.
FRESH WATER
To be ordered through ship’s agent when giving
Advance notice to the Port Traffic Control. Delivery
capacity is approx. 100 m3 per hour.
ICEBREAKING
The Ports of Stockholm offers icebreaker assistance on
demand, in fairways to/from Stockholm via Sandhamn
(Ådkobben)/Söderarm (Lerskärsgrund)/Landsort (Ö
Röko), and in Lake Mälaren in the fairways
Hammarbysluss - Klubbensborg and Klubbensborg Hässelby power station. Icebreaker assistance will only
be given to vessels having paid ship dues and complying with ice restrictions in force.
At home, the average Swede has a dwelling space of
42 square meters or 450 square feet.

PORTS OF STOCKHOLM
ADVANCE NOTICE
All vessels must give Advance notice of arrival to the
Port Traffic Control.The Advance notice should be
given to the Port Traffic Control at least 24 hours
before arrival, or when the vessel is leaving the previous port.Advance notice of waste delivery must be
given at the same time, on the special form for this purpose.
SORTING OF WASTE
All waste to be left ashore must be sorted into the following fractions:
• Coloured glass
• Uncoloured glass
• Metal
• Corrugated cardboard
• Kitchen refuse
• Hazardous waste, e.g. paint remnants, solvents,
chemicals, spray cans, batteries etc. Refuse of this
kind must be packed and marked according to
the EWC code.Waste oil i.e. sludge from the engi
ne room can be delivered to the Port.The water
content should be as low as possible.
Most children start reading English during their
first year at school, at the age of seven.

giving Advance notice of ship's arrival,Advance notice

The vessel must have it's own pumping facility.

the ship is within the
Stockholm port area.

must not be used while
the ship is within the
Stockholm port area.

LIFEBOAT, EVACUATION AND FIRE
EXERCISES
Such exercises must be notified in advance to the Port
Traffic Control.When lifeboats or life rafts are lowered
over the quay, the captain has the full responsibility for
making sure that no one on the quay is hurt. On passenger vessels, such exercises must not be undertaken
earlier than one (1) hour after mooring, nor are they
allowed less than one (1) hour before departure.
MAINTENANCE WORK
Compressed air devices or blower devices must not be
used while the ship is moored within the Stockholm
port area. Fire hazardous work must not be undertaken
until an application in writing has been approved by
The Ports of Stockholm. Maintenance work of other
kinds must be performed in such a way that neither
persons nor the environment will be hurt.
EMERGENCIES
In Sweden, telephone number to the rescue services is
112, also via Sweden Rescue,VHF channel 16.The Port
Traffic Control must also be informed, if an emergency
occurs.
LOUDDEN OIL HARBOUR
For vessels moored at Loudden or Värtahamnen 503,
special rules for loading and discharge are in force.
Please contact the master of the oil harbour for information.
In 2000, some 4.7 million people travelled by excursion boats or
regular boat traffic in Stockholm and the archipelago.

DELIVERIES TO SHIP
Deliveries to cruise ships must be made at the earliest
one (1) hour after mooring, and not later than one (1)
hour before departure. Deliveries to other ships should
be made in such a way that loading and unloading is
not disturbed or endangered.
DRAUGHT PERMITTED
No vessel moored at a quay serviced by the Port, or
passing through the port area, is allowed to have a
draught leaving less than 0.5 m of water between keel
and bottom. It is the responsibility of the captain to
stay informed of the present water level.
OIL SPILLS
If an oil spillage occurs from a ship or from a landbased site, it is the duty of the captain to ensure that all
necessary steps are taken immediately to stop further
spillage. He must inform the Port Traffic Control via
VHF or telephone.The Port Traffic Control will inform
the rescue services and other authorities concerned.
The Rescue Service of Stockholm is responsible for clearing-work during the rescue phase, i.e. while the spillage is still continuing, or the reason for it is unknown.
Clearing-work will be done in co-operation between
the Port, the local Environment Agency, the Rescue services, the Coast guard, the Shipping company and the
Oil clearance company engaged.

test or a full scale test for assessment.

prior to their first call at Stockholm present ships data concerning
rudders, propellers, bowthrusters and maneuverability for assessment
by the Area Manager and the Local Nautical Committee.
4. Deviations from this regulation can be made for modern and
well-equipped vessels with advanced maneuverability.
Two pilots are mandatory if deviations from this regulation is approved of.
5. Vessels which are not allowed to voyage in the fairway during
night (or considerably reduced visibility) is however allowed to shift
quay in the harbour of Stockholm during night.
6. Söderarm fairway: During summertime the maximum draught for
passenger vessels is 9 m, on condition that specific buoys and
beacons are established in the fairway.

a length that exceeds 265 m is 10 m/s.
ANCHORAGE
Sandhamn: 1,5 NM SSE Revengegrundet lighthouse.
Vaxholm:
Maximum size of ships at anchorage at the fjords
around Vaxholm is 100 mtrs of length and 5 mtrs of
draught.The ship shall be equipped with bowthruster,
double rudders and propellers.At bad wheather situations, pilot may decide lower limits.
The Stockholm archipelago has more hours of sunshine than the rest of Sweden.

• The dregded channel is marked by 6 buoys when
vessel's draught > 8.5 m.
• Vessels with draught > 8.5 m will be piloted only in
daylight and good visibility.
• At departure with draught > 8.5 m, berths 634 - 638
and 652 - 655 must not be occupied by berthed
vessels.
• Two pilots for deep draught vessels.
• Vessel shall be moored by port side alongside.
Gangway may not be lowered before berthing.
• Four boatmen at both arrival and departure.
• If l.o.a. exceeds 150 metres and arriving vessel is
assisted by two tugboats, no ships are permitted to
stay at berth 652 - 655 during berthing.
• The suction pipe shall upon berthing be amidships.
• At arrival - all cranes must be in position most far out
on the quay.
Even the swallows think it's worthwhile to fly from Southern Africa to Sweden.
They are nesting here from May to September.

LOUDDEN 701 — 703
Maximum 6.2 metres draught is recommended by SMA.
However, vessels holding total excempt from tugboat,
may berth with full draught according to the Standards
& Limits for the harbour.

reductions of tugboats.Application will be treated and
considered by Swedish Maritime Administration after
first arrival.
There are some 150,000 elks (moose) in Sweden. Elks can
swim, and are fond of the roots of the water lily.
