FLUORHYDRIC ACID (HF)* * FLUORHYDRIC ACID IN SOLUTIONS 70% PERFORMANCES INVENTEC propose you aqueous solutions of fluorhydric acid (HF) at 40%, 50% and 70%. This product is also known as .hydrogenous fluoride. We propose you three grades: • The additived grade HF 70% filled in steel containers of 1200 KG, and 2800 KG. Other specific capacities can be studied. • The HF 40%, 50%, 60% and 70%. Two packaging are available: plastic jerrycans of 22 liters and steel drums of 220liters internally coated with plastic. • The crystal grade HF 70 % HF solutions are particularly used in the glass industry (frosting, satining), in crystal activities (defrosting) and in ceramics activities. Also, in metallurgical field, these grades are used in surface treatment, cast-iron-steel and stainless steels cleaning. HF solutions are also used in other more general applications such as the separation of rare earth, or utilized as a catalyst. Various tests proved that the addition of 2,5 to 3,5 % of H2SO4 allows the conservation and the handling of HF solutions in ordinary steel packaging when its grade is equal or superior to 70%. Please contact us for any other specific packaging. STORAGE & shelf life RECOMMENDED STORING CONDITIONS Storing of the packaging Every packaging has to be stored in a dry and specific well ventilated place, protected from the sun and from bad weather, and easy of access. Also, the packaging has to be placed over a vat of retention that will receive the product in case of eventual leaks. Compatibility with materials and irons Most of the irons are attacked by the HF solutions. Only platinum, gold, silver and mercury are resistant. At high temperatures, alloys based on nickel are resistant. The packaging made of High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) are recommended for all kinds of solutions. According to the temperature and concentrations, polyester and fluoride resin can also be used. INVENTEC uses «Teflon gaskets ® » for iron packaging. CONDITIONS OF USE IMPORTANT REMINDER HF in solution is a particularly aggressive and irritating acid. In addition to that, it is an acid delay. A light contact with the skin may not be felt immediately. For all handling, the operator has to be perfectly protected and has to work at least with someone who watches on him. He has to wear adapted protections such as anti-acid suit, gloves, eyeshades, a pair of glasses, and appropriate masks. All these equipments have to be tested before every use. For the containers, after each decanting, the gas or liquid flanges have to be tightly closed with the new Teflon gasket in order to prevent the inlet of humidity. A new gasket is provided with each container, and is placed under the cap of the container. Please keep in mind that in case of burning (projection of the HF on the skin), the rapidity of the intervention is very important. It has to occur a few seconds after the incident that is why the training of the staff is important to operate in case of emergency. Every concerned person can refer to the safety instructions that has been redacted by AVANTEC, and which are very appreciated by the users. To sum up those instructions, in case of skin chemical burning, you must immediately splash water (preferably warm water in order to attenuate exothermic effect) on the burnt surface during 15 minutes, and then massage with gel or gluconate of calcium at 2,5 %. In order to prevent the leaks or the damage of the gaskets or canalizations, the installations containing HF have to be regularly inspected. Fluorhydric acid (HF) HSE Identification of the dangerous product: Taken from the CE list of dangerous substances (Annex I of the modified directive 67/548/CEE).N°: 231-643-8 Fluorhydric Acid Symbols and danger indications: Very toxic (T+) Corrosive (C) Phrases R: R 26/27/28: Very toxic by inhalation, by contact with the skin and by ingestion R 35: Causes serious burns Phrases S: S 7/9: Keep the packaging in an isolated and well ventilated place S 26: in case of contact with the eyes, wash immediately and thoroughly with water and get in touch with a specialized doctor (dermatology).
