We hope that you all enjoyed your Christmas break and we wish you a very Happy New Year! Thank you for your generous presents and warm wishes. Our new project about dinosaurs will be starting next week (so please keep it a surprise)! ‘Finding Footprints’ will involve the learning of dinosaur names and many facts. We will focus on the features of different dinosaurs and found out why they were herbivores or carnivores. We are sure you will hear a lot about it in the next few weeks! The children will be palaeontologists for our Brilliant Beginning; in small teams they will find and assemble ‘bones’ and discuss what they already know. We will also be discovering different theories as to why the dinosaurs became extinct. During literacy the children will be learning how to use information texts to research and finally create their own information booklet about their favourite dinosaur. Our powerful learning attributes are Problem Solving and Independence. This project will provide plenty of options and choice for the children to encourage these attributes. For our Fantastic Finale we would like to go to the beach for a possible trip and also invite you into the classroom to see our Dinosaur Museum. Further details about this and related homework will be given out next week. YEAR 1 NEWSLETTER - SPRING TERM – 1st HALF At home you could visit the library to find non-fiction books about dinosaurs or you could even visit the Dinosaur Museum in Dorchester. We would like the children to watch a couple of clips from films and documentaries about dinosaurs which are rated PG. We will ensure that we only show suitable clips. Please speak to us if you would like to know more. Our value for this half term is Integrity. Please link this value to the agreement in the home/school diary and sign it with your child after your discussion. During circle time we will be focussing on our emotions and feelings and relating it to making the right choices for ourselves and others. We will be teaching this through the characters of Little Miss and Mr Men, with a continuing reflection on friendship and bullying. We will link this to Judaism and how to understand and respect other people’s beliefs. Adjectives will be introduced during our literacy lessons. We will be using them in our sentences to make them more interesting and ready for story writing after half term. This will be incorporated with our project and stories from around the world. We will continue addition and subtraction strategies. Please look at your child’s homework book to see what stage they are at rather than moving them on to something we have not taught them yet. This will be followed by 2D and 3D shapes and will link with a focus on patterns and sequencing. Please continue with number recognition and formation at home. You could encourage and challenge your child to add and subtract while out and about. We will focus on different positions and balances in gymnastics, while using different levels of apparatus. Please ask your children if they have any PE kit missing as we have noticed a few missing socks and T-shirts. In ICT the children will be learning how to navigate the keyboard correctly and start typing independently. We are very proud of all the children and their attitude to learning and we look forward to another successful and exciting half term. Miss. Hockey and Miss. Lewis Yr 1 Teachers
