African elephants are the largest land animals on Earth. Elephants are
fond of water & enjoy showering by sucking water into their trunks &
spraying it all over themselves. Afterwards, they often spray their skin with
a protective coating of dust. An elephant’s trunk is actually a long nose
used for smelling, breathing, trumpeting, drinking, & also for grabbing
things. They have two finger like extensions on the end of their trunk that
they use to grab small items. The trunk alone contains about 100,000
muscles. Both male & female African elephants have tusks to dig for food,
water & strip bark from trees. Males also use their tusks to battle. These
hungry animals do not sleep much, they roam over great distances while
foraging for the large amount of food they need to feed their massive
bodies— an adult elephant can eat 136 kg in one day! Having a baby
elephant is a serious commitment. Elephants have a longer pregnancy
than any other mammal—almost 22 months. At birth, elephants weigh
about 91 kilograms. African elephants, unlike their Asian relatives, are not
easily domesticated. Sadly many elephants have been killed illegally for
their tusks & some populations are very endangered.
