Institute: Community Services Unit:Foundation Foundation Mathematics Duration: 1 hour Lesson Pl Plan: Scale Drawing Aims 1. To learn how to interpret a scale. 2. To learn how w to use a scale to produce a scale drawing. Objectives 1. Using a scale to determine the real size of an object. 2. Using a scale to determine the real distance between two places. 3. Using a scale to determine the dimensions of a floor plan on a site map. Learning Outcomes By the end of this lesson a student will be able to: 1. 2. 3. Read and use a scale. Calculate real dimensions from a scale drawing. Produce a scale drawing of a floor plan. Resources 1. Full whiteboard 2. MEPA site plans 3. Topic flashcards & Blu Blu-tack. Remote Preparation 1. N/A Adaptation Care gp.1: Care gp.2: Explanation should be slow and repetitive due to students who suffer from attention deficit. Explanation should be bilingual due to a foreign student in the group. A scale drawing is an accurate representation of a real object. Scale drawings are usually smaller in size than the original objects. But in certain cases they have to be enlargements, typical examples of which are miniature electronic circuits and very small watch movements. Time: 10 minutes Development Part 1: Scale Drawings In a scale drawing: All the measurements must be in proportion to the corresponding measurements on the original object All the angles must be equal to the corresponding angles on the original object. To obtain the measurements for a scale drawing, all the actual measurements are multiplied by a common scale factor, usually referred to as a scale. Scales are often given as ratios. When the units in a ratio are the same, tthey hey are normally not given. Beware when you are making a scale drawing; take care to express all measurements in the same unit. Example: Mr. Christopher Busuttil – Scale Drawing Page 2 Institute: Community Services Unit:Foundation Foundation Mathematics Duration: 1 hour Lesson Pl Plan: Scale Drawing Look at this plan of a garden, drawn to a scale of 1cm to 10m. a) State the actual dimensions of each plot of the garden. b) Calculate the actual area of each plot. Example: The following map is drawn to a scale of 1cm to 20km. This means that a distance of 1cm on the map represents a distance of 20km on the land. Calculate the he actual distance between: (i) Bran and Kelv (ii) Bran and Dai Daid (iii) Daid and Malm Time: 15 minutes Part 2: Activity Divide the class in groups of three. Let each group work as a team. Let each group choose a MEPA site plan. Instruct each group to calculate the dimensions of each room of the floor plan chosen. Time: 30 3 minutes Mr. Christopher Busuttil – Scale Drawing Page 3 Institute: Community Services Unit:Foundation Foundation Mathematics Duration: 1 hour Lesson Pl Plan: Scale Drawing Closure/Recapitulation 1. Map scales. 2. Floor plans Time: 5 minutes Assessment Indicators/Key Questions 1. Involve students in working out problems related to co-ordinates. ordinates. 2. Ask different students to explain their own answers for different examples. Modifications / Support / Learning Patterns 1. 2. Assessment Due Date: N/A Mr. Christopher Busuttil – Scale Drawing Page 4
