Domain: Art history European section 2 Aims: To help students understand that time period. 1000-1150 10th century To highlight the key characteristics of Romanesque’s architecture and sculpture i.e round arches, barrel vaults, less windows, tympanums, and façade. To explore the students understanding of the topic through testing the students with quick 5min tests and drawing the characteristics of Romanesque architecture and sculpture. Overall Learning Outcomes for the Scheme: Students will: Demonstrate a good knowledge of the topic through test sheets. Demonstrate understanding of the characteristics of Romanesque architecture and sculpture through drawings. Understand the reasons behind architecture i.e why were the walls so thick. Reason for tympanums. Investigating/Exploring/Creating: Investigating: Students will: Investigate the topic through firstly a hand out of key notes (from the art book and online sources) on that time period. Which are largely visual with supporting imagery for any points made about the architecture. Explore the main characteristics of Romanesque architecture and sculpture through online videos showing one prime examples of a Romanesque building i.e Notre Dame la Grande, Poitiers, France, 12th century Explore and understand the function of the architecture i.e thick walls for support, barrel vaults, through notes and discussion about the characteristics. Explore the characteristics of Romanesque sculpture ie Tympanums. An example we will be largely focusing on is “The last judgement” St. Lazare Autun France. I will test students on this specific piece as there is a lot of key points and information they need to know in this piece. Understanding/Evaluating: (include illustrations): Students will: Understand the handout I will give them on Romanesque architecture and sculpture. I will read through all notes with the students to make sure they all understand what is being discussed. I will also insure they understand the information by using quick and simple test to make sure they do understand and are listening to the information. Understand the placement of this architecture through an educational virtual tour video of a Romanesque church. Literacy and numeracy: Key words: Romanesque, Architecture, Pilgrimage, Vaults, Tympanums, Teaching/Learning Strategies: Students will: Write in notes into the handout instead of reading through it. This will help them to pay attention and to take in the information better. Ask direct questions to a random students to help keep the students focused and listening. I will use visual aids for all of my notes and interesting educational videos. Materials: Handout notes, Art book, overhead projector, online videos Differentiation: I have two students who have very poor English and will struggle with the art history. I will write in their note on the handout for them so they will not need to in class. I will also try to keep the notes as visual as I can to help them follow the class and not become uninterested. Timeline/Sequence of Lessons: Week 1 Lesson 1: Introduction to the topic through notes on the handout. Short paragraph with good points of information not too much text. The handout will go on to introduce and explain 10 characteristics of Romanesque architecture. I will then have a simple test base on key points of information. The test will be visual mostly pointing out the key points of architecture we have looked at. Week 2 Lesson 2: Focus onto a Tympanum. A detailed handout based on “The last judgment” will be given out to the class. I will talk through the information with the students to make sure there is no problems with the notes. I will also show an educational videos based on The last judgment. I will also show a virtual tour through a Romanesque church so students can see the architecture we have discussed. Assessment Rubric: Assessment Criteria 1.Understanding Understanding Students should demonstrate a good knowledge of the subject matter Assessment Criteria 2.Drawing Students should demonstrate a high quality drawing with attention to detail. Assessment Criteria 3.Behaviour Students should demonstrate an interest and effort made in regards to note taking, work sheets, homework, essays and group discussion. Evidence of learning Work sheets, essays, homework should demonstrate the information learned.
