From Our President - Skagit Regional Health

From Our President
Mission
The mission of the Skagit Valley
Hospital Foundation is to raise,
manage and distribute funds to
assure the continued availability
of quality health care services and
programs at Skagit Valley Hospital.
The Foundation will foster awareness
of and community support for
Skagit Valley Hospital through the
involvement of the people
it serves.
Board of Trustees
Volunteers are the key to the Skagit
Valley Hospital Foundation’s efforts
in securing philanthropy. We are
pleased to acknowledge the efforts
of our trustees, who unselfishly
give their time and resources as an
example to all, and who provide
leadership in the Foundation’s
prudent stewardship of gifts.

On behalf of the Foundation Board, let
me say we have a lot to be proud of!
As you read through this issue, you’ll see just some of the
“fingerprints” that are a direct result of our donor’s generosity.
2014 marked another milestone - with a
campaign to build a new Cardiac Rehabilitation
Center. This heavily used facility was severely
dated and needed a complete renovation. Our Board
embraced a $410,000 campaign that would provide a
change and hoped two years was enough to raise the funds but prepared
ourselves if it took longer. That preparation was short lived.
We received word that the Kelly Schols family was stepping forward and
committing to raise $100,000 to honor Heather; a wife, mother and employee
at Skagit Valley Hospital, who left us far too soon as a result of a cardiac event.
The Heather Schols Cardiac Rehabilitation Center became more than a
“facility campaign,” it took a life of its own. Seven Lakes In Seven Hours (SLISH)
began as a foot race between Kelly Schols and three friends with unbridled
energy and love for their good friend. The community responded to their
contagious enthusiasm and “SLISH” events began popping up everywhere.
The family continues to fundraise toward their goal and any anxiety we have
had about raising the funds has been replaced with awe and sheer joy.
The finish line came at our annual Festival of Trees event last November. Weeks
prior to Gala, we lost a great friend to the Foundation and to this community,
Mark Iverson. His contribution to Skagit Valley Hospital through 26 years of
Festival of Trees and his annual Circle of Friends events like ”An Evening with
Polo,” and “ A 1930’s Picnic” raised nearly $250,000 for the Wound Healing
Center in memory of his brother Gail Edward Iverson. In a fitting tribute
to Mark, his family and friends raised more than $50,000 to name the gym
area within the Heather Schols Cardiac Rehabilitation Center after him.
The Schols and Iverson families exemplify what it means to live life, live
it well and be the difference in someone else’s life. As I complete my final
term as President and 10 years on the Board, I can tell you that the passion
and dedication it takes to create these fingerprint legacies is firmly etched in
the character, drive and integrity of our Foundation Board Members, staff
and donors who loyally support Skagit Valley Hospital, year after year.
Sincerely,
Chris Cammock, President
Skagit Valley Hospital Foundation

The Heather Schols
Cardiac Rehabilitation Center
Friends describe her as loving,
conscientious, compassionate – and
a person with a heart of gold. To her
family, she was the “innermost part” –
and so for them, it was very appropriate
that the new Cardiac Rehabilitation
Center at Skagit Valley Hospital be
named after Heather Schols.
Heather was born in 1964 and moved
from California to Skagit County with
her family at the age of three. She became
a Skagit County “native,” attending
Burlington schools and graduating from
B-EHS in 1982. Heather earned her AA
in Health Information Services and took
pride in her career as an Accredited Record
Technician. She and her mother created
H & P Copy Service and worked inside
the walls of Skagit Valley Hospital on
a regular basis, where she also taught
childbirth classes. Along the way, she
married Kelly Schols, and together they
raised two daughters Alysa and Amy.
On a beautiful summer day in 2012,
while boating in the San Juan Islands
with close friends, Heather died of a
JULY
The rainy summer evening did not deter the
Gail Edward Iverson Circle of Friends and guests
at “Camp Sunshine – Adult Day Camp.” The event
raised more than $21,000 to support the Wound
Healing Center at Skagit Valley Hospital. Presenting
sponsors were Collins Fisheries, Inc. and Skagit
Bank and live auction sponsors were Gregg and Lea
Davidson, Foothills Toyota Scion and Floyd Jones.
sudden cardiac incident. She was 48-yearsold. Although she had been experiencing
some abnormal heart palpitations, it was
a shock to everyone who knew her.
And then…the loss of a loved one
turned into a meaningful gift.
Last summer, Kelly Schols learned
of the Foundation’s campaign to raise
funds for a new Cardiac Rehabilitation
Center at Skagit Valley Hospital. The
hospital Foundation had committed
to raise $410,000 to build a new center
where patients who were recovering
from a heart incident would enter
a program of exercise, education
and behavior modification.
He also learned that with a gift of
$100,000 toward the campaign, he
could name the center in Heather’s
memory. So he made the commitment.
“I really wanted to name the center
for my daughters. I want to leave a
legacy in her memory for them.”
Kelly’s friends immediately jumped
on board, helping to raise funds with
a “Seven Lakes In Seven Hours” fundraising event last Fall. He and three
friends collected pledges in support of
their attempt to run to all seven lakes
in the Chuckanut Mountain Range in a
seven-hour period. They were successful!
With personal pledges, gifts from
his company, CPI Plumbing, and
additional gifts from friends and service
clubs who want to make this happen,
Kelly is closing in on his goal.
The Skagit Valley Hospital Foundation
thanks the Schols Family for this generous
commitment and is proud to name the
center in memory of Heather Schols.

Gym of Schols Cardiac Rehabilitation
Center Named After Mark Iverson
He taught us much. His gifts of time
and talent have a lasting impression on
the Foundation family and the campus
at Skagit Valley Hospital. Sadly, this
past November, we lost our dear friend
and long-time Foundation donor Mark
Iverson to cardiac complications.
Mark’s creativity, compassion and
“anything is possible” attitude helped
to grow services and projects at Skagit
Valley Hospital. He was a talented artist,
florist, caterer and conspirator! Mark
designed a tree for the Festival of Trees
for 25 years. On design day, as other
designers were working diligently on
their creations, Mark’s tree would stand
bare. He would arrive late in the day
with helpers and like a whirlwind, was
done. The quick transformation was truly
amazing! Among his many roles with
Festival, he served with Debbie Lisser as
Festival co-chair, often as a gala caterer,
space designer and sounding board.
He graciously donated several
pieces of his art to the hospital, most
notably his collaboration with friend
Toni Franulovich on the installation of
“Amazing Women, Wonderful Hearts.”
However, his greatest passion was the
Gail Edward Iverson Circle of Friends
which he formed, with the help of family,
friends and the Foundation, after the
sudden passing of his brother, Gail. The
Circle dedicated its efforts to raising
funds for the Wound Care Center at
Skagit Valley Hospital and since 2008
has raised close to $250,000 to support
the purchase of much-needed equipment
and the redesign of the center’s lobby.
Mark always came up with the
most interesting and fabulous fundraising event ideas. We watched
polo matches, took airplane rides,
“fished” off a pier and had a downhome picnic, just to name a few!
To honor Mark and his dedication
to Skagit Valley Hospital, this past
November, Festival of Trees auction guests
raised their bid cards to support the
naming of the gym in Mark’s memory
which will be part of the new Heather
Schols Cardiac Rehabilitation Center.
We know he would have been humbled,
as he shied away from recognition.
We were delighted to be a part of his
world, in whatever capacity it was. What
a ride! We learned by his example to
give of your time and talent wherever,
whenever possible, that’s how he lived.
In the immortal words of Mark Iverson:
“That would be just fabulous!”

The Seven Lakes In Seven Hours event in
memory of Heather Schols raised more than
$30,000 to benefit the new Cardiac Rehabilitation
Center at Skagit Valley Hospital. “Iron Men” Ed
Perry, Todd Power, Kevin Bingham and Kelly
Schols hiked/ran more than 25 miles to the
seven lakes in the Chuckanut Mountain Range.
