OFFICIAL-LANGUAGES STUDY FELLOWSHIP
PURPOSE
The purpose of the program, in British Columbia, is to encourage students to enter a full-time post-secondary
program offered in French at a French language or bilingual institution, in Canada, for a period of one year of study.
ELIGIBILITY
At the time of application an eligible applicant must:
• Be a permanent resident British Columbia, i.e. have resided
in BC for at least 12 consecutive months prior to to the day
preceding the intended start of the program of study,
excluding any time spent studying in a post-secondary
institution.
•
Provide proof of Canadian citizenship (birth certificate,
passport) or provide proof of “permanent resident” status
(landed immigrant card). ATTACH PHOTOCOPY.
•
Provide proof of Social Insurance Number since this is a
taxable award. ATTACH PHOTOCOPY.
•
Intend to register in September as a full-time student taking
at least 60 per cent of his/her studies in courses in which the
language of instruction is French, at a post-secondary French
language or bilingual institution in Canada.
•
Monies received under this program constitute taxable
income. The award will be released in two installments (50%
of the award per trimester). Cheques will be made payable to
the student and forwarded to the student’s permanent address
as listed on the Confirmation of Registration form. Cheques
will not be issued until the Confirmation of Registration form
is received. Please allow 6-8 weeks for delivery.
Students are urged to submit their application well ahead of
the deadline as the fellowships are awarded on a first come,
first served basis.
As soon as the application form and required documentation
are received and it is ascertained that the applicant is eligible
to receive the fellowship, an award letter will be forwarded
to the student, including a Confirmation of Registration
form.
DEADLINE DATE
• Bursaries will be approved by the Ministry on a first come,
first served basis, subject to available funding (based on a
fiscal year beginning on April 1st and ending on March 31st).
• Only fully completed and documented application forms will
be considered. Incomplete application forms will be
returned.
CONDITIONS OF AWARD
• The maximum value of the fellowship is $1,250 per school
year (i.e. two trimesters) and $5,000 for the applicant’s
lifetime.
• Students who have received the full Fellowship ($5,000) for
Official-Languages Study are ineligible.

The Confirmation of 1st Trimester Registration form is to be
completed at the time of registration in September, signed by
the registrar of the institution concerned and returned to the
Ministry. As soon as this confirmation is received, a cheque
will be issued for the first trimester disbursement.
•
The Confirmation of 2nd Trimester Registration form is to be
completed in January and returned to the Ministry. As soon
as this confirmation is received, a cheque will be issued for
the second trimester disbursement.
•
Students graduating from Grade 12 should be aware that they
may encounter difficulties in enrolling in Quebec universities
due to differences in the two provinces’ school systems.
•
No cheques will be issued if information from the institution
indicates that the student is not registered in nor attending the
program specified at the time of application.
