WHY CASH, WHY CREDIT
Y
ou know that you can use money to buy things
you really want or need. But sometimes, instead
of paying with cash, you might see adults paying with
a credit card. What’s the difference between cash and
credit cards?
Make It a Habit
A
re you saving regularly? Kids who make
it a habit of saving regularly, even saving
small amounts, are often successful savers when
they get older. It’s important to save regularly.
As your money grows, you will be able to plan
for things you want, or more importantly NEED,
because you’ll have the money for it.
Cash is Money You’ve Already Earned
You earned the money in your piggy bank. That money
belongs to you. When you pay with cash, you’re using
money that you have today.
Credit Cards are Borrowed Money
Some adults use credit cards to borrow money to pay
for things. Usually, they do this when they don’t have
enough cash saved up to buy the item, but they need
or want it now. For example, let’s say that the roof in
your house leaks, and your parents don’t have enough
money to get the roof fixed. But the roof needs to be
fixed right away.
If your parents use a credit card to fix the roof, they’re
really borrowing money from a credit union or bank. If
they don’t pay the money back quickly, they will have
to pay the credit union or bank extra money. When
credit unions or banks lend people money, they charge
people for that money.
Many people are smart and pay that money back as
soon as they can. They may take money from their next
few paychecks to pay it back. In addition, until all the
money is paid back, they may not spend money on
anything “extra” like going out to a fancy restaurant or
buying new clothes. The sooner they pay off the money
they borrowed, the less “extra” money they owe the
credit union or bank.
So, now you know the difference.
3 STEPS TO TAKE:
1. Put a little aside from any money you get,
whether it’s an allowance or a gift, and
deposit it into your Credit Union account.
2. Track your savings by looking at how much
you have in your account and monitor how
long it takes you to save a certain amount.
3. Plan for short-term and long-term goals. For
example, a short term goal could be to buy
a new game, while a long term goal could
be to buy a bike.
Once you start achieving your goals, you will
find that saving becomes easier. So, make it a
habit to start saving now!

What’s Going on at Argent?
W
e are going through a BIG change at Argent - a System Upgrade.
What’s a System Upgrade? It’s like you going back to school after the
weekend and now you have newer, better and faster computers in every
classroom, the library, the office, and even the clinic – EVERYWHERE.
Because this is a BIG project, we will need to close the credit union for a few
days. So, we’d like you to do us a favor. Remind your parents that we will be
closing all of our locations at 3 p.m. on Friday, April 28th and will reopen
at 9 a.m. on Tuesday, May 2nd. They can visit our website ArgentCU.org/
Upgrade for details or give us a call at (804) 748-9488, option 2.
