Matthew Stone - LIVE! With Kelly and Michael
Where is/was your internship (Company and City)?
LIVE! with Kelly and Michael
New York, New York
Tell us about your internship?
LIVE! with Kelly and Michael is the second internship I completed under the ABC branch.
A year ago I also was lucky enough to intern with ABC News and the number one morning show “Good Morning America”. At LIVE! with Kelly and Michael I arrive at the studio
and office around 6:45AM and begin to look up “host chat” items for Kelly Ripa and Michael Strahan to read on air. These stories can range from hot news topics to quirky stories.
How did you find your internship?
As I mentioned above I got my start in the industry with ABC News and “Good Morning
America”. I was eager to get into the business and was able to secure my internship with
ABC thanks in part to a relationship I built with alum from SUNY Oswego.
What is your major and did it influence your decision to become an intern?
I am a Journalism major at SUNY Oswego. If you want to go into TV Production your best
way of getting a foot in the door is through internships, I knew I wanted to start early and
was fortunate enough to get that opportunity with ABC News when I was a rising junior.
What are your main responsibilities as an intern?
Oftentimes I will be greeting the guests and their teams at the door ready to bring them to their designated green rooms. Once the producers are
ready for the guests I’ll bring them onto the set and from there they will be prepped by the producers of the show. After the show and posttapings have been completed I work in the office for the remainder of the day looking for interesting host chat items and running a variety of errands for the Producers of the show.
What type of experience have you gained so far that you wouldn't have learned in a classroom?
My experience the last 2 summers with ABC News and LIVE! with Kelly and Michael have been invaluable. You never could imagine the work,
stress and highs and lows the staff goes through on an average day.
What is the most exciting part of your internship?
I’ll answer this question in two parts. The easy answer for me would be to list the celebrities I have had a chance to meet and speak with (Miley
Cyrus, Selena Gomez, The Goo Goo Dolls and Keith Urban to name a few). However, I would say the most exciting and rewarding part for me is
when you are recognized for your hard work. I've had producers personally thank me for things I have done at ABC News and LIVE! with Kelly
and Michael. There is no better feeling than knowing you're doing a small part in something
so massive
Do you have any suggestions for students who would like to do something similar?
You have to be fearless and be motivated. You will often find yourself in an uncomfortable
position or doing something you're not fond with. You never get a second chance to make
a first impression. Come into work with your bucket hat on and do your part.
Do you think your internship will play an important role in your education and career?
There is no doubt. I was actually hired by ABC News to freelance for a couple of months
during the winter of 2013-2014. I am hopeful that my internships the past two summers will
lead to a job at a network news station.
Do you have any internship advice you would like to pass on to other students?
The internship is what you make it. Even if your internship is not at somewhere where all of
your friends will be envious, you really can learn a lot. Find your passion and do whatever it
takes to make sure you stick with the organization you want to be with.
