YEAR 9 CYCLE 3 - Shoreham Academy

Cycle 3 June 2016 Year 9 Learning Guide By Ms Penney Assistant Principal: Teaching, Learning and Assessment June 2016 Dear Parents / Carers Re: Up‐coming Key Stage 3 Assessment Week for Cycle 3 We are writing to give you advance notice of the assessment week that is coming up for your son/daughter in all subject areas. These have been scheduled for the weeks beginning the 13th and 20th June, Maths and English exams are likely to be held in the first week and all other exams during the second week. We aim to get the timetable out to you soon after half term which will be available on Firefly. The assessments in June will help teachers to assess students’ progress against the Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) from Cycle 3 but they will also go back to retest key elements of cycles 1 and 2. In support of the assessment week the school will do a number of things to support you and your child including: 1. A KS3 KPI Learning Guide (cycle 3) is now available on the website and on FireFly, hard copies of the guide can also be collected from the Pastoral offices. The Learning Guides explain which KPIs have been studied this cycle and therefore what should be revised in preparation for the assessment. You will also find links and support material to help your son/daughter revise. The cycle 1 and 2 guides are also still available in order for you to support recapping of KPIs covered earlier in the year. 2. Homework revision/support will be set by classroom teachers, this can be accessed on FireFly. There will be no other homework set other than preparation for assessments after the half term holidays. We ask that you support your son/daughter by making sure that they have access and use the support above to prepare for the upcoming assessments. Assessments will be used as one piece of evidence to track progress towards KPIs and whether or not your child is meeting age expected learning in that specific area. We would like to take the opportunity to thank you again for supporting the school in raising your child’s attainment. If there is any way we can support your son/daughter further with their assessment preparation please do not hesitate to contact individual class teachers, Ms Penney or myself. Yours faithfully Yours faithfully Ms V Penney Assistant Principal Teaching, Learning & Assessment Miss L Thompson Assistant Principal KS3 Raising Standards Leader YEAR 9 ENGLISH KPIs This term, year 9 students have been focusing on KPIs 1‐5, as these are the most vital skills for the Literature GCSE, which they will be sitting in year 10. We have read one of two novels, ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ or ‘Of Mice and Men’, and been practising the same skills that will be assessed in the GCSE exams next year. We will also be reading a play, either ‘Blood Brothers’ or ‘View from a Bridge’, during Summer 2, and applying those skills in order to further our preparation for GCSE Literature. Date of Assessment Week Beginning 13th June KPI No. KPI and Success Criteria
I can make developed and convincing inferences from a text, and select evidence to support them. I can write a response which develops a clear argument or viewpoint. I can identify and analyse the effects of specific parts of a text, with detailed explanations, supported by evidence. ENGLISH 9.1‐9.4 I can explain the relevance of a text’s context, supported by evidence. Students should be able to read the extract of ‘Of Mice and Men’ or ‘To Kill a Mockingbird’ (depending on which novel they’ve read in class), and use evidence to make inferences about the text (read between the lines), show understanding of the novel’s context, and analyse the text’s effects. I can use standard English where appropriate. I can accurately write in both past and present tenses. I can use new vocabulary and sentence structures to achieve effects. ENGLISH 9.7‐9.9 Students should be able to create a piece of writing that accurately uses tenses, standard English, appropriate vocabulary, and a variety of sentence structures for effect. I can identify, define and use grammatical terminology. ENGLISH 9.10 Students should be able to identify the different parts of speech, such as nouns, verbs, pronouns, adjectives, adverbs and prepositions. YEAR 9 CYCLE 3 ENGLISH REVISION A separate revision pack is provided for students to prepare for their English end of year examination. This can be found on the school website and on Firefly. Students will be sitting 2x 1 hour 45 min papers which will cover a large number of the KPIs studied over the course of the year. YEAR 9 MATHS KPIs Year 9 will be completing a transitional move from key stage 3 to key stage 4. A move which incorporates topics covered in the Mathematics GCSE. Cycle 3 will allow students to gain confidence and experience in; area, perimeter, volume, surface area, linear equations on graphs, Pythagoras and trigonometry ready for key stage 4.
