The Australian Nurse Diary presents vital phrases to point to – to assist in the
care of non-English speaking patients
INSTRUCTIONS - A survey of nurses has helped to identify common questions and statements that
can be very useful when dealing with patients who cannot speak English.
Nurses are NOT expected to attempt to speak another language, or pronounce these words – these
phrases can be used to point to and aid communication with nodding and shaking of heads.
Further recommendations on useful or improved phrases and other languages to cover, would be
gratefully received. Please email [email protected]
