Thawing TEFAP Chicken - Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank

Safely Thawing 10 Pounds of Chicken
№
DO NOT thaw chicken on
your counter. Raw chicken
can contain bacteria that will
make you sick. Thawing
chicken like this gives these bacteria a
chance to grow—which could lead to
your family getting sick.
Thaw chicken in the
refrigerator. It will take
2-3 days to thaw, but bacteria
won’t grow. Put the bag in a
pan to catch any juices !
Chicken thawed like this can be bagged in smaller portions and
refrozen safely.

Wrap the chicken in several
layers of plastic wrap and
thaw it under cold water in a
large pot. Change the water
every 30 minutes. It will take
about 5 hours to thaw.

You may need to put a pan on top
of it to keep it under water.
Cook the chicken immediately.
Leftovers can be frozen for later meals.
