MEDALS CEREMONY
The Schreyers
In 1945, William A. Schreyer arrived in State College as a freshman, Class of
1948, to enroll in what was then the Pennsylvania State College.
“I had such a great time at Penn State,” Mr. Schreyer wrote in his 2009
memoir, Bullish on America. “It was a real growing-up experience for me.”
Upon graduation, Mr. Schreyer joined a training program being established by
Merrill Lynch. It was a decision that led to a 45-year career with the
company that propelled Mr. Schreyer from an apprenticeship at the age of
20 to CEO and chairman of the board in 1985.
His leadership extended to his alma mater. Mr. Schreyer, who died in
January 2011 at the age of 83, served on Penn State’s Board of Trustees, which
included three one-year terms as board president from 1993 through 1995.
He was the chairman of the University’s first capital campaign, The Campaign
for Penn State, which began in the late 1980s, and served on the executive
committee of the subsequent Grand Destiny campaign. It was in 1997 that Mr.
Schreyer and his wife, Joan, gave Penn State an unprecedented gift of $30
million to launch the honors college. That gift transformed what had been
the University Scholars Program into an honors college that quickly defined
honors education at the nation’s public universities. In 2006, the Schreyers
continued their support of honors education with a second $25 million gift to
the university.
“People have sometimes asked me, ‘What makes you so loyal to Penn State?’”
Mr. Schreyer noted in his memoir. “I think a lot of what contributed to that
was the quality of people who went to Penn State when I was there, and the
professors. You really don’t forget it.”
The Scholars Medal
The medal, which Scholars
receive in recognition of their
achievements, and which they will
wear at commencement, was designed
by John A. Cook, professor emeritus
of art in the College of Arts and
Architecture. He describes his design
for the medal in this way:
“The lion thus depicted emerges
with extended claws to become the
University’s symbol of intellectual
excellence. The qualities of ‘Scholarly
Achievement,’ ‘Integrity of Purpose,’ and
‘Intellectual Curiosity’ form the legend of
the medal and define the field from which
the lion gathers his strength.”
“While the lion is certainly no stranger
to Penn State, this particular species
with flowing mane has not been much
in evidence since 1942 when Heinze
Warneke’s version established residence
as the athletic logo.
In August 2008, Mr. Cook and his
wife, Dickie Jessen-Cook, donated
all rights for use of the Scholar medal
design to the Schreyer Honors
College in perpetuity. The Schreyer
Honors College gratefully
acknowledges this gift.
“A suitable symbol for the Schreyer
Honors College requires something agile
and alert with the potential to reach out
and encompass new dimensions
of thought.

MEDALS CEREMONY
Schreyer Scholar Awards
The Schreyer Honors College
presents the following awards
annually at the spring medals
ceremony recognizing the
accomplishments and
achievements of graduating
Schreyer Scholars.
The Paul Axt Prize
The Paul Axt Prize was established by the University in recognition of
Dr. Axt’s distinguished service and commitment to honors education.
It is awarded annually to a senior Scholar (graduating spring semester
or having graduated in the preceding fall or summer) who exemplifies
those attributes which Professor Paul Axt, founding director of the
University Scholars Program, sought to foster through the honors
program: the passionate commitment to inquiry that promotes high
scholarly achievement and the intellectual curiosity and daring that
lead to the development and pursuit of wide-ranging interests.
