Minutes of the CLM-Community
8th SAB meeting in Frankfurt on September 01st, 2014
Participants:
Ch. Schär, B. Ahrens, B. Rockel, B. Früh, A. Will, Ch. Kottmeier
Material:

1. Quorum
Quorum is fulfilled.
2. Agenda
Agenda was accepted.
Additions for miscellaneous:


Strategic discussion on an improved cooperation (of the SAB) with the COSMO
consortium (influence COSMO developments, COSMO science plan) as well as other
RCM Communities
more attractive Assembly programme
3. Minutes of the 7th SAB meeting
No comments. Minutes accepted by the SAB members.
4. Report of the coordinator
Recommendation for the „project webpage“:


Additional webpages (as for CORDEX) for “selected” projects including a list of
simulations. “Selection” is based on the project size and the willingness of some
volunteers to provide the page
Probably provide a „project template“ which has to be filled in.
CLM-Community development

The number of participants per institution is not comparable, since some institutions
also count master students whereas others don’t.
TERRA


Hydraulic conductibility is not well represented yet; an improvement might reduce the
bias in Eastern Europe.
Documentation for the no-flux lower boundary conditions exists but only privately upto-now -> should be forwarded to Uli Schättler and made publicly available.
Convection permitting/Very high-resolution climate simulations

8th SAB meeting



Diurnal cycle of precipitation is not captured in parameterized deep convection.
Convection permitting simulations solve this issue.
New challenges arise with respect to boundary layer and radiation.
GPU dynamical core needs less computing time. ETHZ will take this advantage to
perform very high resolution simulations over whole Europe.
A Multi-component coupling towards a regional climate system model (RCSM) is necessary.
5. Science Plan
The SAB finds the science plan in good shape and suggests an update every 2-3 years.
6. Future aspects
Comments on ICON, plan of the PG ICON:
Check the impact of different dynamic (COSMO – ICON) since the dynamic works differently
with different physics.
7. Miscellaneous
Comments on the CLM Assembly



Find a time at the assembly that provides a better opportunity for the SAB members
to attend presentations of the assembly (maybe in the evening). This requires a
rearranging of the quasi standard agenda.
Make the assembly more attractive for in-betweens member (i.e. those who are not
new in the community and no „old pals“, perhaps invite them for a plenary talk
(solicited presentation).
Dedicate one day to a certain working group (e.g., CRCS, RCSM, CORDEX, ….) with
invitation of external scientists.

Next meeting: in the course of the CLM Assembly 2015, 21-25 September in Belvaux,
Luxembourg.
