ROMAR’S RATING
“It’s important to this team that Chris
have a big year. As coaches, we love
Chris’ willingness to try to do the right
thing. It’s important to him to play the game
the right way. He’s arguably the hardest
worker on the team, and we’ll need his
leadership as a fourth-year player.
“He’s got a nose for scoring, too. He’s
going to get shots up and shoot a fairly
high percentage. His ability to play inside
and outside provides match-up problems
for opponents.”

ROMAR’S RATING
“When most people talk about the
Billikens’ future, the first person they
usually mention is Marque. He’s definitely
our most exciting returning player along
with being our leading returning scorer.
“Marque improved markedly in two
areas last year – his three-point shooting
and his assist-to-turnover ratio. His assistto-turnover ratio was a solid positive,
which demonstrated his maturity.
“He had a remarkable season last year
considering that he didn’t play for six
months over the spring and summer
because of the ankle injury. Now that he’s
completely recovered, he has the ability
to become an All-Conference player this
year.”

What’s A Billiken?
Designed and manufactured in the
early 1900s as a bank and statuette, the
Billiken was the national rage for about
six months. By 1912, the Billiken and its
value as a good luck charm were just
memories for all except the loyal fans of
Saint Louis University.
How the Billiken became attached to
the University remains a matter of debate.
It seems to have happened sometime
between 1910 and 1911 at the height of
Billikenmania.
St. Louis sports writer William
O’Connor decided that SLU football coach
John Bender resembled the Billiken. Later,
Charles McNamara drew a cartoon of
Bender in the form of a Billiken and posted
it in the window of a drugstore. The
football team soon became known as
Bender’s Billikens.
One last point on Billiken luck: to buy
a Billiken gives the purchaser luck, but to
have one given to you is better luck.
