For more details, please see the “ALERT” insert inside of this issue Mr. Q’s Corner At almost the end of my training ride coming back from Spring Valley last Saturday, I decided to turn left at the Shell station in Friant and head over to the Millerton Store. I haven’t ridden this section for some time and thought it would be a change from my usual routine of heading back on Friant road into town. When I first started cycling in the early 80’s, riding up the dam grade on Millerton was my challenge. My goal was to make it to the top just before the Millerton State Park entrance without stopping. My first attempt to ride up this section was a struggle; I had to get off of my bike at the fire station and rest before continuing or even walking a ways. This route became my after work routine for several months until I was able to ride this section without stopping. In 1984 Millerton Road past the Park entrance was a pleasant section to ride, especially during the spring with the view of the valley to the west and rolling green hill on both sides. Traffic was almost non-existent but for an occasional vehicle heading for the development at Sky Harbor or a Sierra High School bus heading to Friant and Madera Ranchos to drop off students after school. The corner of Sky Harbor Road and Millerton Road where Table Mountain Casino now stands was acreage with one or two small houses. A far cry from what it is today. (continued on page 2) Volume XXXXl, Issue 2 Senior Benefit Bike Event April 16th, 2011 Mark your calendars for the Third Annual Benefit Bike Ride for the Ranchos/Hills Senior Center, located just off of Avenue 12 at 37330 Berkshire Drive in Madera Ranchos. Door prizes, food, and fun are standard fare. Last year’s rides were 10, 25, and 65 miles. This year a century ride may be added. Fliers will follow in future newsletter. Please direct inquiries to Mike Thomson at 559-240-1525 or Joann Blancett at 559-645-4864. The Center is open MondayFriday from 9am until 1pm. Lyle Vargas, Clovis Larry Paris, Clovis Mr Qs Corner (continued from Page 1) Saturday, January 15, at 11:45 am, on this two-mile section of Millerton Road from the Millerton State Park entrance to the Casino had to be the busiest and most dangerous section of road I’ve ridden in a long time. There were two cattle trucks, four large delivery trucks and an endless stream of car traffic heading east. I surmised that 90 percent of the vehicles were heading for the Casino. When I stopped at the light in front of the Casino the majority of the cars turned left into the Casino; two continued on to Auberry road. Not only was the traffic heavy, but the road conditions are not conducive for safe cycling. The road is narrow with no shoulder. The pavement is breaking off at the road edge leaving a two to four inch drop off in places. I would recommend that local cyclist avoid this section when ever possible and especially during weekends. This jersey would make a great addition to your selection of riding apparel. The standard blue and yellow is also available in both men and women specific sizes. There are also blue/yellow and red/yellow wind vests with back pockets. Cost of jerseys are $60.00; the wind vests are $55.00. To order contact Kathy Tanaka at [email protected] or 559-999-4579 FCC’s tireless advocate, Nick Paladino, has kept us all abreast of funding, development, and progress on the Friant/Millerton Road improvement project for the last ten years. The recent completion of the beautiful four lanes of the Friant Expressway out to the community of Friant is a joy to ride, not to mention the safety aspects for both vehicle and cyclist. The Millerton section to the Casino along with the stretch from Prather to the Hwy 168 four lanes has to be two of the roads in the foothill areas east of Fresno in desperate need of improvement and widening. My reasoning probably is much too simplified, but as I look around Fresno County in my travels and see road widening and repaving projects taking place, along with freeway extensions, I wonder why there doesn’t seem to be funds available for a two mile road improvement project that would benefit both cyclist and drivers. I fear that my riding days will be far behind me before any progress takes place. Ride safe and see you on the road. Below are the dates for this year’s FCC events, as well as the dates for a few other popular nearby rides. Please consider volunteering to assist in making our club-only events happen, such as the Kirch Flat Century, Tour de Lakes, or the Tandem/Recumbent Rally. If we spread the volunteering around, then everyone will get a chance to ride - - and that’s really what all of us want to do. So here’s the list to mark your calendars! Here’s the schedule: Belmont Time Trials These always start at Belmont and Academy at 5:30 in the evening on the second Thursday of every month. PAGE 4 ROUGH DRAFT The 2011 FCC New Year’s Day Ride by Greg Issinghoff The annual FCC New Year’s Day ride, a ride intended to get all club members off to a good start on their cycling year, was definitely a ride that showed who are the hard core riders of our club. The weather was just plain awful - - raining and only about 40 degrees. But surprisingly, about 40 people didn’t think that a little cold damp weather would stop their cycling fun. The ride started in the parking lot in front of Steven’s Bicycles, and, as is tradition, goes out to the park at Lost Lake. Also, as is tradition, Diana and Kendia Herrington were there at the park with lots of homemade goodies, such as pastries and hot cinnamon apples, and hot coffee and hot chocolate - - perfect for cold riders to warm up with. Also, Kent Tanaka and John Fries hauled the firewood and got a couple of fires going to help warm the wet riders. Despite the cold wet weather, the New Year’s Day ride was quite successful. The following are pictures of the event.
