Mr. Q’s Corner
At almost the end of my training ride
coming back from Spring Valley last
Saturday, I decided to turn left at the
Shell station in Friant and head over to
the Millerton Store. I haven’t ridden this
section for some time and thought it
would be a change from my usual
routine of heading back on Friant road
into town. When I first started cycling in
the early 80’s, riding up the dam grade
on Millerton was my challenge. My goal
was to make it to the top just before the
Millerton State Park entrance without
stopping. My first attempt to ride up this
section was a struggle; I had to get off
of my bike at the fire station and rest
before continuing or even walking a
ways. This route became my after work
routine for several months until I was
able to ride this section without
stopping.
In 1984 Millerton Road past the Park
entrance was a pleasant section to ride,
especially during the spring with the
view of the valley to the west and rolling
green hill on both sides. Traffic was
almost non-existent but for an
occasional vehicle heading for the
development at Sky Harbor or a Sierra
High School bus heading to Friant and
Madera Ranchos to drop off students
after school. The corner of Sky Harbor
Road and Millerton Road where Table
Mountain Casino now stands was
acreage with one or two small houses.
A far cry from what it is today.

Mr Qs Corner (continued from Page 1)
Saturday, January 15, at 11:45 am,
on this two-mile section of Millerton
Road from the Millerton State Park
entrance to the Casino had to be
the busiest and most dangerous
section of road I’ve ridden in a long
time. There were two cattle trucks,
four large delivery trucks and an
endless stream of car traffic
heading east. I surmised that 90
percent of the vehicles were
heading for the Casino. When I
stopped at the light in front of the
Casino the majority of the cars
turned left into the Casino; two
continued on to Auberry road. Not
only was the traffic heavy, but the
road conditions are not conducive
for safe cycling. The road is
narrow with no shoulder. The
pavement is breaking off at the
road edge leaving a two to four
inch drop off in places. I would
recommend that local cyclist avoid
this section when ever possible
and especially during weekends.

FCC’s tireless advocate, Nick Paladino, has kept us all abreast of funding, development, and progress on the
Friant/Millerton Road improvement project for the last ten years. The recent completion of the beautiful four lanes of the
Friant Expressway out to the community of Friant is a joy to ride, not to mention the safety aspects for both vehicle and
cyclist. The Millerton section to the Casino along with the stretch from Prather to the Hwy 168 four lanes has to be two
of the roads in the foothill areas east of Fresno in desperate need of improvement and widening. My reasoning probably
is much too simplified, but as I look around Fresno County in my travels and see road widening and repaving projects
taking place, along with freeway extensions, I wonder why there doesn’t seem to be funds available for a two mile road
improvement project that would benefit both cyclist and drivers. I fear that my riding days will be far behind me before
any progress takes place.
Ride safe and see you on the road.

The 2011 FCC New Year’s Day Ride
by Greg Issinghoff
The annual FCC New Year’s Day ride, a ride intended to get all club members off to a good start on their
cycling year, was definitely a ride that showed who are the hard core riders of our club. The weather was just
plain awful - - raining and only about 40 degrees. But surprisingly, about 40 people didn’t think that a little
cold damp weather would stop their cycling fun.
The ride started in the parking lot in front of Steven’s Bicycles, and, as is tradition, goes out to the park at
Lost Lake. Also, as is tradition, Diana and Kendia Herrington were there at the park with lots of homemade
goodies, such as pastries and hot cinnamon apples, and hot coffee and hot chocolate - - perfect for cold
riders to warm up with. Also, Kent Tanaka and John Fries hauled the firewood and got a couple of fires going
to help warm the wet riders.
Despite the cold wet weather, the New Year’s Day ride was quite successful. The following are pictures of
the event.

mountains. Our rides always include a hearty
lunch stop. Call for details.
The Mountain Men meet Monday and Wednesday
mornings in the Park and Ride lot next to the fire
station at Temperance and FRWY 168. These are
"C" paced "show and go" rides of 55 to 80 miles
looping into the foothills. Mountain Women are
also welcome. Call for further information.
ROG Ride/Circuit: Meet Ken at Armstrong and
Herndon for a midweek ride around the Circuit.
Sandwiches at the Meat Market at Fowler and
Shepherd on our return. Leisurely pace. All riders
welcome, not just retired old guys!
Split-level Ride Toward Trimmer: All level riders
gather at Shaw and Academy for a BCD ride out
Belmont towards Piedra. All riders will stop at
Doyal's Store for the jumping off place for each
category's destination. The B's will continue up to
Oak Knolls with an option to ride further to
Trimmer; the C's will ride up to Trimmer, climb
Maxon and the back of Wildcat and return on Watts
Valley Road; the D's will ride up Maxon, Burrough
Valley to Humphrey's Station, up Pittman Hill, and
back Watts Valley Road to the start. This is good
opportunity to meet club riders from different levels.
The Circuit: Join Ken and Nancy at the corner of
Shaw and Armstrong in Clovis for our monthly
weekend ride around the Circuit. Climb up to
Millerton Store, cross the plateau by Table
Mountain, and stop for breakfast at the Dam Dinner
in Friant. Head back up the bike lane on Friant
Road and connect to the Clovis bike trails back to
the start.
ROG Mystery Ride: Meet Ken at Armstrong and
Herndon for a ride out east of Clovis with an
optional destination. The countryside is greening
up this time a year so should be pretty.
Comfortable pace.
Three Rivers: Join Marshall and Kathy at the
service station below the Dam in Lemon Cove.
Ride up along beautiful Kawhea Lake to Three
Rivers. Stop for homemade ice cream at
Reimer's. Optional lunch in Exeter on our return.
Raymond Ride: Start at Perrin and Sommerville.
There will be three short stops for snacks at
Yosemite Lakes, Raymond general store, and 22
Mile House. We may stop at the Friant Shell
Station on the way back. The route will head out to
Spring Valley, through Yosemite Lakes to
Raymond. From Raymond, we’ll ride the 3 miles of
dirt hard pack road to 22 miles House to Friant and
back to start. This is 100 miles of rough up and
down Madera County roads. As always, rain
cancels.

Valentine's Ride to Madera Ranchos: Meet Pete
at the Wahoo's Fish Tacos place on Palm and Nees
with your favorite valentine. Take a leisurely ride
out to Liberty High School in Madera Ranchos.
Easy pace with mostly flat terrain. Lunch at
Wahoo's on our return.
ROG Ride/Circuit: Meet Ken at Armstrong and
Herndon for this second midweek ride around the
Circuit. Again, we'll stop for sandwiches at the Meat
Market on our return.
Sand Creek Store: Join Kelley at the watertower in
Reedley. Ride out east of town, through Orange
Cove, and beyond into the hills up to Sand Creek
Store for the turn around. Mostly flat with one
moderate two-mile climb.
Pre-Blossom Ride: Start at Shaw and Academy.
Ride to Piedra, through Wonder Valley, up Elwood
to Squaw Valley and down Hills Valley. Think you're
done? Think again! Now Bill leads you back up into
the hills to Sand Creek, over the hill to Squaw
Valley, back up Elwood, down through Wonder
Valley and THEN back to the start. Get ready for
4200 feet of climbing.
The Blossom Trail Cafe Ride: Meet Nancy and
Ken at Shaw and Academy for this monthly ride out
Belmont to Doyal's Store in Piedra. Stop for a
snack and they continue on across the bridge
through Tivy Valley. Loop past the horse farm and
back to Belmont for lunch at the Blossom Trail
Cafe. Finish the ride up the Academy bike lane
back to the start. Please park between the business
areas on Shaw east of Academy.
ROG Mystery Ride: Once again, meet Ken at
Armstrong and Herndon for a lengthy spin out east
of Clovis. Route will be up to the group on where
and how far. Comfortable pace.
Spring Valley School: John will begin this ride at
the North entrance to Woodward Park. Ride out the
Eaton Trail to Friant, cross the river and continue up
through the hills to Spring Valley School. Should be
very pretty this time of year. Some good pulls on
this one, but doable. Stops at the Shell Station in
Friant coming and going.
Paso Robles to Cayucos & Back: Start at
McDonald's in Paso Robles (Hwy 46/101 Jct.).
Take Adalaide Rd., Hwy 46 & Old Creek down to
Cayucos for lunch. Return up Old Creek & Hwy 46
back into Paso Robles. Lots of climbing on this one
- 6400 feet. Call to confirm and for carpool
information - also for the start time!
Show-N-Go: Meet in Woodward Park at the
Compass. Come on out for an easy C paced ride to
somewhere in the lower foothills.
Sanger Starbuck's Ride: Finish the month of
February out with this popular local ride. Join Nancy
at Clovis East High School (the Southeast parking
lot on Leonard near Ashlan). We ride out through
the backroads to Sanger for a treat at Starbuck's.
Continue east of town into the riverbottom and back
up Ashlan to the start. Great beginner's ride!
