Scripture Laurie White “John 16: 16-24” 16 Soon you won’t be able to see me; soon after that, you will see me.” 17 Some of Jesus’ disciples said to each other, “What does he mean: ‘Soon you won’t see me, and soon after that you will see me’ and ‘Because I’m going to the Father’? 16 »Dentro de poco ya no me verán; pero un poco después volverán a verme».17 Algunos de sus discípulos comentaban entre sí:«¿Qué quiere decir con eso de que “dentro de poco ya no me verán”, y “un poco después volverán a verme”, y “porque voy al Padre”?» 18 What does he mean by ‘soon’? We don’t understand what he’s talking about.”19 Jesus knew they wanted to ask him, so he said, “Are you trying to find out from each other what I meant when I said, ‘Soon you won’t see me, and soon after that you will see me’? 18 E insistían: «¿Qué quiere decir con eso de “dentro de poco”? I assure you that you will cry and lament, and the world will be happy. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy. 21 When a woman gives birth, she has pain because her time has come. But when the child is born, 20 Ciertamente les aseguro que ustedes llorarán de dolor, mientras que el mundo se alegrará. Se pondrán tristes, pero su tristeza se convertirá en alegría. 21 La mujer que está por dar a luz siente dolores porque ha llegado su momento, GRACE UNITED METHODIST CHURCH 5th Sunday in Lent April 2, 2017 she no longer remembers her distress because of her joy that a child has been born into the world. 22 In the same way, you have sorrow now; but I will see you again, and you will be overjoyed. 23 In that day, you won’t ask me anything. I assure you that the Father will give you whatever you ask in my name. 24 Up to now, you have asked nothing in my name. Ask and you will receive so that your joy will be complete. Sermon Rev. Janessa Chastain “Complete Joy” Prayer of Confession Laurie White People: Renewing God, trusting in your infinite grace, we confess that we need your healing and your forgiveness. Leader: For all this is broken in our minds and bodies, People: we ask your healing. Leader: For all that is amiss in our choices and our relationships, People: we ask your forgiveness. Leader: For all that works against life and blessing in our hearts and in the world, People: we open ourselves to your transforming grace. Heal us, forgive us, and make us new. Amen. Service of Communion Laurie White Today’s communion offering will be used to fund three of the outreaches that missions have identified in our Easter offering this year: Golden Gate/Wesley Community Center, UMOM and Grace United Methodist Youth. Please prayerfully consider what you can give to help these important efforts in Christ’s name this Easter. These “second mile” mission gifts are a fitting response to Christ’s sacrificial giving of himself for us and the new life it affords us all. ^ Our Response “We are Called” ^ Benediction TFWS 2172 Rev.
