FOOD SERVICE BOARD

FOOD SERVICE BOARD
ARE YOU A BELIEVER?
WE BELIEVE
A world without packaging is hard
to imagine. It would not work.
Packaging is something we see and
deal with every day, all the time.
We need it for practical reasons:
to help us carry goods around and
to protect them, to keep food and
beverages fresh and to make them
last longer.
Today, more than ever, convenient
packaging is a key element in
attracting attention and convincing
customers. Unique designs and
shelf appeal can only be created
with high-quality board.
As consumer demand for ecological
products keeps growing alongside
the need to reduce our carbon
footprint, a great packaging solution
must meet the expectations for
sustainability and responsibility.
We believe in high-quality,
sustainable paperboard packaging
because it is the natural solution to
modern challenges.
Are you a believer?
Kotkamills’ new ISLA range of
food-service boards represents the
next generation of opportunities
to support sustainable packaging
solutions and waste reduction.
With modern, on-the-go lifestyles,
consumer demand for coffee, food
and drinks to-go continues to grow
all over the world.
Food-service packaging plays an
important part in this convenience
lifestyle, as more and more
disposable cups and plates are
needed.
We believe that these solutions
should be made as sustainable as
possible.
Today, too few disposable cups and
plates are recycled, even though
they could be. That is why we
wanted to develop a more easily
recyclable and repulpable set of
products, resulting in a range of onmachine, coated barrier boards for
the food-service industry.
By applying our unique waterbased, dispersion-coated barriers
to pure, natural cartonboard, cups
and plates made from this material
can be easily recycled and repulped.
Naturally, these new cartonboards
are designed to run on existing
cup- and plate-making machinery.
DID YOU KNOW?
Kotkansaari, the centre
of the town of Kotka
and the place where
Kotkamills’ story
originally began, is a
small island. The sawmill
built on the eastern
part of the island in
1872 was the largest in
Finland at the time and
is still the location where
Kotkamills’ products are
made today.
UNIQUE
WATER-BASED
BARRIERS
We believe that in the future
all packaging materials will be
renewable. Today, we are walking
the path towards this vision with
the first on-machine, innovative
coating process to make foodservice materials that can be easily
recycled with normal paper waste.
We have developed nextgeneration solutions for water-,
moisture vapour- and greasebarrier products that contain no
traditional plastic coatings.

Our water-based, dispersioncoated barrier boards can be
converted in the same way as
standard paperboard.
They also need no special recycling
route, meaning any waste material
is likely to be more valuable than
plastic-coated board waste.
A clear benefit to the user.
LEADING
THE WAY IN
SUSTAINABILITY
Here at Kotkamills we take great
pride in leading the way to a
more sustainable future in foodservice and packaging board.
Besides offering our customers
more sustainable products, we
are committed to working in a
sustainable way every day and using
raw materials, energy, water and
other resources efficiently.
All our products are recyclable
and safe to use, and are mainly
produced from renewable materials.
The wood fibre used is procured
from Finnish wood suppliers who
verify the origin of the raw materials
and ensure the legality of the fibre
sources.
We are self-sufficient in terms
of electricity and heat energy.
Approximately a third of the energy
used comes from renewable fuels.
