SPORTS ROUNDUP
HELM WIND RUN
Hannah Reed, Jamie Jacques, Cerys Strong,
Adam McFadzean, Ava Nicholson and Sam
Birkbeck, plus Aleisha Cooper-Smith and
Beth Longstaff as volunteer helpers, travelled to Penrith to take part in the County
gymnastics final. Representing Eden, the
team came fifth in the Key Step 2 section with
Hannah Reed being the highest point scorer
in
the
category
on
the
day.
Over 120 competitors took part in the day’s
runs, which, in addition to the 10k Helm Wind
3 Villages race, included a 1.6k race for
runners up to the age of 9, and a children and
adults 3k run. Long Marton School won the
team prize thanks to Campbell Donnelly,
Hannah Reed & Tiegan Lowthian, who came
first in their races, and Morag Donnelly and
Cara Williamson who came second. There was
also a podium place for Mrs Smith in the 3k
race.
Many thanks go to the local businesses who
provided sponsorship, particularly British
Gypsum who provided all Adult trophies, al
first place Junior trophies, 2 perpetual shields
and medals for all competitors. We are grateful
to Friends of Long Marton School (especially
Kim Atkinson and Lucy Donnelly) who
organised the event raising £720. Thanks are
also extended to Howgill Harriers for their
assistance.
The chess team retained the Rotary Club
Shield for the fourth year in a row, with Josh
Hudson beating George Edgar in the individual final and Alex Hogg in fourth place.
Twenty children from Long Marton took part
in the event, which was held at the school.
Long Marton A chess team retained the
Ullswater Shield, the overall trophy for the
Eden area, for a second year, finishing top of
Division 1 on finals day. Long Marton B were
second in Division 2, with the C and D teams
challenging strongly in Division 3. Josh Hudson was the only player to win all sixteen
matches he played during the three-event
season, receiving special recognition.
EASTER BUNNIES
HUNT FOR EGGS
Pictured are Reception pupils dressed up
as Easter Bunnies as part of the Easter
activities at Long Marton School. All three
classes visited Long Marton Institute for
the morning to take part in an ‘Easter Experience’, organised in partnership with
Long Marton Church.
The tag rugby team took part in the Eden
finals at Frenchfield, organised by the Sports
Partnership. Attended by over three hundred
children, the event saw some flowing rugby
and the team, who scored some exceptional
team tries, were very unlucky not to qualify
for the semi-finals, missing out by one try.
Twenty-nine children took part in the Small
schools swimming gala and finished runnersup out of nine schools participating, having
competed in events such as
the
woggle relays, obstacle races and relays. The
children supported their team-mates and
other competitors superbly and were a
pleasure, as always, to take to sporting
events.
SMALL SCHOOLS
TEAM TOGETHER
Class 1 did egg rolling and egg decorating,
and the whole school made palm crosses
with the Reverend Sarah Lunn.
Competitors ready to start the 10K
run
The term ended with a celebration assembly where individual and team achievements were celebrated, the Choir performed Disney Dazzle and the whole
school, parents, staff and friends took part
in a giant Easter egg hunt.
At the end of March, forty three Y5/6 pupils from Long Marton, Crosby Ravensworth and Asby Endowed schools went on
a joint residential together to Whithaugh
Park, Rock UK outdoor activity centre in
Newcastleton in the Scottish borders. They
were accompanied by six members of staff
from all three schools.
They enjoyed a range of activities including
high ropes challenges, climbing/abseiling,
low ropes, kayaking, zip slides, orienteering, walk of life, swimming and various
sports in the sports hall.
These activities fulfilled the outdoor education elements of the PE curriculum and
helped them to develop team building and
personal organisation skills, while, at the
same time, enabling them to get to know
other pupils in preparation for their transition to secondary school.
CLASS 1 VISIT TO
TULLIE HOUSE
PANTOMIME RAISES
OVER £2,000
Class one children encountered a great
learning experience at the Mechanical Circus Exhibition based at Tullie House Museum. The children were able to make
their own automata toy using cams and
axels.
They then explored the mechanical circus
exhibition of the Netherlands Sate Museum
of science and medicine. The children were
able to use what they had learned to work
out and see how automata’s work from
around the world
Rachel’s
Diary
A big thank you to all the people who helped
to make possible the Friends of Long Marton
School production of Cinderella, and also to
everyone who supported it by joining the
audience and providing packed houses for
each performance. The proceeds from the
event will be split between Long Marton
School and the Long Marton Children’s Club.
In addition, a big thank you too to Cumbria
County Council for the grant of £392 from
the Appleby (Eden, Upper Eden) Community
Grants Fund towards the costs of staging the
show.
Pictured below are the children involved in
the mini-play ’Who's in the loo?’ which
opened the second half of the show
EASTER EXPERIENCE
Just before Easter, pupils, staff,
parents and governors visited
Long Marton Institute to take
part in a series of activities that
followed Jesus’ journey through
Easter week from Palm Sunday
to Easter Sunday.
Members of the local churches
and clergy team worked with
small groups to explore dreams,
serving others, remembering,
loneliness, suffering and new
life.
COMMUNITY CHOIR
FESTIVAL
BAGS TO SCHOOL
Thank you for continued
support by donating your old
clothes to school. The recent
collection raised £240 for
school funds.
Long Marton School took part in
a choir festival at Penrith
Methodist Church. Choirs from
other schools also involved as
well as Eden Voices—an adult
choir that meets weekly on
Wednesday evenings in Long
Marton school. The proceeds of
£450 from the event were
shared between the Sunbeam
Trust and Long Marton
school.
SPORTS RELIEF 2014
The whole school—pupils,
staff,
governors
and
parents—took
part
in
running a mile for Sports
Relief 2014. It was a great
event, and we raised nearly
£500. Pictured below are
some of the children involved
in the run.
Treasured children
This issue we focus on all our Year 6 pupils who will sadly be leaving us at the end of this
term and going to the Grammar School in September. We shall miss them all but urge
them not to look back and wish them all the luck in the world to fulfil their dreams.
Goodbye, God Bless and Good Luck.
