2016 Annual Report - Project Transformation

Summary of Impact 2016
From the Director
Five years ago, Project Transformation Tennessee released its very first “Summary of Impact” report highlighting these numbers: 222 children,
24 young adults, 3 site churches, and 550 volunteers. We were in awe. God had breathed this vision for ministry, our community had faithfully
stepped forward and showed up, and in the holy space between neighbors, we started to break down walls and forge new relationships that
were transforming lives, neighborhoods and churches. Fast forward to today, and we are still in awe. No matter what our age, we all deeply desire to be known—really known—and to belong. Every program of Project Transformation’s ministry
recognizes this basic truth of humanity. Our opportunity to impact our community is about more than increasing literacy for children and
growing young people into principled Christian leaders. We believe that our opportunity for impact is grounded in helping each person who
touches this ministry to realize their own potential to learn, lead and serve, and to be part of God’s kingdom on earth. Behind every number in
our Summary of Impact is a story of someone doing just that. And for that, we celebrate. As fall nears, our board and staff continue to live into God’s unfolding vision for Project Transformation. Afterschool programming has begun
with a new class of young adult interns and children. We are working diligently to discern new growth steps through the development of our
next strategic plan. And with the addition of a Volunteer Coordinator to our staff (welcome, Taylor Davenport!), we are excited to expand
partnership with the hundreds of volunteers who make our ministry possible. In all things, we give thanks to God for continuing to use this ministry as a vessel for hope and transformation. Thank you for all that you do to
inspire and support our mission together.

Our Mission
To engage young adults in purposeful leadership and
ministry, support underserved children and
families, and connect churches to communities in need
College
Students
Our Strategy
The Three Cs
The easiest way to understand how we live out our
mission is remembering the three Cs: children,
college students, and churches. All three Cs come
together in our collaborative program model,
through which college-age young adults implement
literacy and social-emotional interventions with
children, strategically housed in United Methodist
churches. We believe that transformation
happens through relationships. It is in the holy
space between each C that transformation occurs.

Afterschool Program
After four years of providing free
summer enrichment programs, PT
completed it’s first year of
afterschool programming in three
low-income communities in Nashville.
We served 101 children during the
2015-16 school year. Programming
focused on enriching mind and body

Summer Day Camp: Elementary
We served 642 children during the
summer. They read one-on-one with a
volunteer for 40 minutes each day to
improve comprehension and
fluency and to develop a love for
reading. Pre- and post-summer
reading assessments indicated that
99% of students improved or
maintained their reading level.
Children also engaged in physical
activities, creative arts, and Bible
lessons and received two healthy
meals each day. But even more
important were the relationships built
with our interns and volunteers.

Year-Round Fellowship Program
Afterschool programming was led by 13
college-age interns with the assistance of
115 community volunteers. Three of these
interns served full-time through our yearround fellowship program. These fellows
lived in intentional Christian community
on the campus of The Scarritt Bennett
Center in Nashville.
Fellows quickly learned they must rely
on God, the church and each other to be
successful in ministry as they also
become role models to the children with
whom they build relationships. As they
left, our fellows called PT a life-changing
experience that will impact how they
interact with their communities for the
rest of their lives. Fellows invested more
than 5,000 hours of service and all
completed the experience reporting an
increased interest in future community
service with low-income communities.

Summer Internship Program
We engaged 63 college-age young
adults in ministry and leadership
“I had a lot of
through our summer internship
program at seven sites across
Tennessee. Interns led our summer day
camp program and mentored our
elementary and middle school
participants. They lived in Christian
community on campus at Belmont
University (Nashville), Middle
Tennessee State University
(Murfreesboro), and Christian
Brothers University (Memphis). There,
they shared meals, worship
experiences, and social events. They
exchanged program ideas, formed
lifelong friendships, and processed
how God is moving in the church and
the world. Each Friday, interns
participated in ministry exploration in
collaboration with other organizations
whose leaders described their work
and their own call to ministry and
service. The options numbered more
than 28 and ranged from urban
education to the judicial system, with
collaborative partners that
included Memphis Teacher
Residency, The Nashville Food Project,
Greenhouse Ministries, and Methodist
Health Care. Post-program surveys
indicated that 96% percent of interns
will continue to serve low-income
communities as a result of serving with
Project Transformation.

modeled a love of literacy for our
children and youth, and provided
encouragement for interns. For many
volunteers, serving with Project
Transformation is a life-changing
