Year 3 - Autumn Term 1. (6 week topic) Rotten Romans
English
Design Technology
Narrative– Explore a range of Roman myths and legends and identify key features
such as settings, characters and plots. Use their knowledge to plan and write their
own Roman style myth or legend.
Poetry– Read and watch a selection of Army Strong drill poems and marching
songs. As a class and groups read aloud and perform poems showing an
understanding of tone, volume and actions.
Non Fiction Information Texts– Research fascinating facts about the Roman
Empire/Roman life. Find different ways to retrieve and record information about
Romans. Organise the information to create fact pages and our own information
books using key features such as diagrams, headings and sub headings.
Topic Linked Maths
Read Roman numerals from I to XII.
Using knowledge of Roman numerals
design and create a clock/sundial. Tell
and write the time from an analogue
clock, including using Roman numerals
from I to XII, and 12-hour and 24- hour
clocks.

Geography
Through the use of maps, atlases,
globes and digital/computer mapping
resources, we will and discuss the
features of the Roman Empire.
Explore how it has changed over
time, locate countries and describe
features such as population, climate
and physical features .
Art and Design
Look at images of a range of Roman tools and weapons
including catapults. Use research to develop a design for
own Roman tool. Through making model children will
select and use a range of tools and equipment and
materials. Children to use their technical knowledge to
evaluate their Roman tools.
Year 3 Sharks (Autumn 1)
Research a variety of Roman art including Roman
shields, pottery and mosaics. Record their
observations and create their own work inspired
by what they have seen. Develop their skills in
painting, sculpture, and their understanding of
colour and shape using a range of materials.
Science
Investigating which materials would be the best
to create Roman tools with. Set up practical
experiments and fair tests to check suitability of
materials for creating Roman tools. Record results
and observations in a range of ways including
diagrams, tables and charts.

Learn to use technology safely with a
focus on creating strong passwords.
Using Purple Mash online software, along with
internet searching the children will collate
information to create an information text about
Roman soldiers’ equipment and a newspaper
article about the Roman invasion.
History
Research The Roman Empire and it’s impact on Britain.
Through learning about the beginning of the Empire, Roman
Life, Legends of Rome and The Roman Legacy children will
make connections and look at trends over time, and develop
and use a range of historical vocabulary and terms.

Exploring birthing ceremonies and the different ways in which these are celebrated and
conducted across different religions including Christian, Muslim and Sikh. We will be
making comparisons between these all and
talking about our own personal experiences.

Developing and using a range of skills including team work, throwing and catching
to play competitive games, and apply the
basic principles of attacking and
defending.
Through use of percussion instruments
children will review core skills such as
keeping and moving to a beat, exploring
volume and pitch.
Introduction to basic French. Through a
range of games and activity linked to
‘My Family’ there will be a balance of
spoken and written work. Children will
be introduced to new vocabulary
about greeting people and names for
family members.
Through ongoing work on school and
classroom expectations, children will
reflect and celebrate their successes and
set high expectations and goals from
themselves. Explore strategies for
keeping safe physically and emotionally.
