Who’s Watching You? Several years back Rodney Atkins sang a song titled “watching you”. It was about a dad and his son; and the amazing influence a father has over their children’s behavior. The lyrics go something like this: Driving through town, just my boy and me with a happy meal in his booster seat… A green traffic light turned straight to red, I hit my brakes and mumbled under my breath… Then my four year-old said a four letter word I said, "Son, now where did you learn to talk like that?" I'm your buckaroo, I wanna be like you I wanna do everything you do So I've been watching you." We got back home and I went to the barn I bowed my head and I prayed real hard, Said, "Lord, please help me help my stupid self." Later that night at bedtime I walked by his room, he turned on his Scooby Doo nightlight, crawled out of bed and he got down on his knees, and closed his little eyes, folded his little hands and spoke to God like he was talking to a friend, And I said, "Son, now where'd you learn to pray like that?" He said, "I've been watching you, dad, ain't that cool? I'm your buckaroo, I wanna be like you I wanna do everything you do So I've been watching you." Being a godly example is not only challenging at times, but honestly we aren’t consistent enough for the impressionable eyes of our children, (Rom 3:23). As much as we’d like to be remembered for the amazing godly things we may do occasionally, it’s the everyday things that leave the longest impression. Paul had spent some time helping a group of believers be more like Christ by exposing them to teachings and trying to be an example to them. He said in 1 Thess 1:5-6, “You know what kind of men we proved to be among you for your sake. And you became imitators of us and of the Lord…” The reality is that takes more focus than we often times acknowledge. North Town church of Christ 2400 N. Main St. McAlester, OK 74501 Bible study - 10:00 am Evening Bible Study and Devotional - 6:30 pm. The scriptures are packed with inspired teachings to help father, mother, or child know how to be more consistent, but it seems they all end up pointing to just a handful of basics. But consider how to put this passage into practice, “So now faith, hope, and love abide, these three; but the greatest of these is love.” (1 Cor 13:13). Dads, love like this, and live like this, and you WILL make a lasting impression.
