We are pleased to report some significant accomplishments during the past year.
• The John Muir Trauma Center consistently scored among the top five performing hospitals of 125
high performing trauma centers included in a study conducted by the National Trauma Data Bank.
Survival rates at John Muir were found to be well above the national average.
• John Muir Health has enhanced its minimally invasive surgery offerings with the acquisition of two
advanced high definition daVinci® Surgical Robotic Systems. Both robotic surgical systems were paid
for with unrestricted gifts from community members providing our community increased access to
many minimally invasive procedures.
• John Muir’s critical care team was honored for making a major contribution to patient care and
outcome performance measures. The award was the result of initiating 24/7 remote monitoring of
critical care patients on both campuses from the Critical Vision eICU Center. Physicians and nurses
at the remote site monitor both the vital signs and the physical condition of these very acute care
patients in sixty critical care beds. They provide a second set of eyes as backup to the clinical staff who
are at the bedside.
• The Concord Campus earned five-star ratings for 2009 in valve replacement and coronary bypass
surgeries, treatment of heart failure, and overall cardiac services, from HealthGrades. This independent
health care quality company that analyzes quality at the nation’s 4,971 non-federal hospitals, also rated
Concord’s cardiac surgery program the highest rated cardiac surgery program in Northern California.
• The Walnut Creek Campus has been named one of America’s Best Hospitals 2008 by U.S. News &
World Report. This year, 5,453 medical centers were evaluated and John Muir’s Walnut Creek Campus
was among 170 hospitals nationwide to receive the “Best Hospitals” distinction.
Your continuing commitment resulted in the Foundation receiving $5,076,611 in donations during the
2008 calendar year. This annual report gives more background on the two new robots that unrestricted
donations made possible and the two building projects for which our capital campaign fundraising
is essential.

It Takes a Team to Save a Life
Surgeons, physicians, nurses, technicians,
therapists and support staff collaborate
On February 11, 2008, after eight
years as a paramedic and the last
seven as a Marin County firefighter,
Ruben Martin, was seriously injured
when a fire truck, just returning
from a call, backed into the
Throckmorton Ridge Fire Station
and pinned him against another
truck. The accident left Ruben with
a crushed pelvis and a seriously
injured left leg causing him to bleed
profusely. There was so much blood;
he was convinced that he was not
going to make it. An off-duty
firefighter, Dave Carr, happened to
be at the fire station and called for a
helicopter. Two other firefighters
who lived nearby came up the hill
to the fire station to help. They
put a tourniquet on Ruben’s leg
using a paintbrush as a crank to
tighten it down. Another fire fighter
left to pick up Ruben’s wife, Kelli,
in Windsor.
When Ruben came to, he could
hear the helicopter overhead. He
said that he wanted to go to Santa
Rosa since it would be his last
chance to say good bye to his family.
After the paramedics stabilized
Rubin, and he began to feel like he
could survive, he asked the flight
nurse where he would get the
best trauma care. She said without
hesitation, “John Muir.”
Ruben arrived at John Muir at
4:18 pm in the afternoon about
40-45 minutes after the incident.
The first thing he remembers in
the Trauma Center was hearing
Dr. Nicholas Skaric giving
commands and someone stroking
his head. Dr. Skaric led a surgery
team of Brian Chin, M.D., vascular
surgeon; Gregory Rhodes, M.D.,
vascular surgeon; Ziv Peled, M.D.,
plastic surgeon; and David D. Lin,
M.D., gastroenterologist for that
first surgery. He had two additional
surgeries with Dr. Skaric, one
assisted by Andres Caicedo, M.D.,
and one with Brian Chin, M.D.
Following those first three surgeries,
he had two more with plastic
surgeon Ziv Peled, M.D., before he
was discharged.
During his eleven week stay at John
Muir, Ruben received care from
emergency physicians; multiple
surgeons; respiratory therapists;
nurses working in emergency/trauma
services, surgery and recovery, ICU,
orthopedics and rehab; imaging
technicians; physical and occupational therapists; and a social worker
(see photo of some of these caregivers on page 7). He remembers
very little from the first part of his
stay except that on Valentine’s Day,
his breathing tube was pulled out,
and he kissed his wife and told her,
“We did it.”
Ruben spent eight days in the ICU
and 54 days in the orthopedic wing
(4-West). He was finally moved to
the fifth floor for rehabilitation
where he had physical therapy and
occupational therapy.
On April 26, 2008, Ruben left
the hospital with a leg brace and
crutches. In a few weeks, he used a
cane and today walks without any
assistance. Ruben had three additional outpatient surgeries with Dr.
Peled. Not only did Ruben survive
his ordeal, but as a testament to the
care he received at John Muir, six
weeks after his last surgery, Ruben
climbed a Mayan pyramid during a
much needed vacation in Belize.

Concord Campus among the first
with surgical robotic technology
“I was so fortunate that there was a robot in my area”
In 2002, the Concord Campus,
with a gift from a generous philanthropist, became one of only 75
hospitals in the United States to
adopt da Vinci® robotic technology.
Last year, when Lafayette resident
Pat Noceti’s OB/GYN Sandy
Hughes, M.D., recommended that
she consider this type of surgery as
the best option for gauging the
spread of her cancer, she was lucky
to have the technology available
right here in Concord. She was
referred by Dr. Hughes to Babak
Edraki, M.D., a highly skilled
gynecologic oncology specialist on
staff at John Muir Health and one
of only a few doctors with similar
expertise in the Bay Area.
After doing some research, Pat
concluded, “It was less invasive than
conventional surgery and there was
a much shorter recovery time. By
using the robot, the surgeons would
be able to remove the disease and
biopsy the lymph nodes at the same
time so we could see if the cancer
had spread.”
The advantages for patients are
significant. Pat Noceti came home
from the hospital the day after her
surgery and began walking. It
wasn’t long before she resumed her
daily 30-minute walking regimen.
Since her surgery and her positive
diagnosis Pat commented, “I was
so fortunate that there was a robot
in my area, that I currently need
no more treatments, and that my
cancer was picked up right away.
I wish everyone had access to this
type of quality care. My experience
at John Muir was very positive. It’s
not just about the robot or the technology, it’s also about the people.”

purchased two advanced high
definition da Vinci® Systems
– one for the Concord Campus
replacing the 2002 model and one
for Walnut Creek. This purchase
was made possible using the
unrestricted gifts of many donors.

With the purchase of these two
robots, John Muir Health has
enhanced minimally invasive
surgery options for patients. This
advanced system allows the surgeon
greater access because of the arms
extended reach. The introduction of
high definition provides the surgeon
with stunning 3D vision.
Surgeons at John Muir Health are
using the da Vinci system for a
variety of urological treatments
such as prostatectomies and partial
nephrectomies (kidney); benign hysterectomies as well as gyneocologic/
oncologic and gastrointestinal
procedures. In the near future, there
are plans for heart and general
surgical applications.
These new robotic systems feature
advanced high definition digital
technology. They have four robotic
arms one of which wields a tiny
video camera and the others which
manipulate complex surgical
instruments giving the surgeon
more degrees of motion than a

In December of 2008, the
WPC funded a Belmont
Infuser for the Trauma
Center which had been
recommended by Dr.
Michael W. deBoisblanc,
Medical Director of
Trauma. He used this
infuser in Iraq to rapidly
infuse warmed blood
and/or fluid into soldiers
with traumatic injuries,
and it will be used at John
Muir for critically injured
patients with life-threatening bleeding.
The WPC also funded five
plasma screens and their
installation throughout the
new and enlarged Theresa
M. Caygill Emergency
Department for the purpose
of immediate communication among staff members
assuring the highest quality
of patient care.

The Capital Campaign for John Muir Health
The Campaign will provide necessary resources to complete
the Cardiovascular Institute and The Muriel T. and Thomas
J. Long Patient Care Tower.
Today, John Muir Health not only depends on gifts to support its programs and technology
purchases but also to assist with the cost of construction. Philanthropic contributions are a vital
source of capital funds in addition to those raised from the sale of hospital bonds and the use of
JMH reserves. Broad community support is necessary for the completion of these projects.

Over the last year, progress on the two new
buildings at John Muir Medical Center –
Walnut Creek and John Muir Medical
Center – Concord has been visually exciting as
the towers reach their finished heights.
Early in the year both campuses celebrated
with groundbreaking ceremonies followed by
celebrations commemorating the placing of the
last steel beam on each building in November
of 2008 and January of 2009.
Now that the buildings are more than
architectural drawings and the floor plans are
coming to life, these significant changes signal
to the community that John Muir is not only
an important resource for the community
today but is keeping its promise to continue
to serve this growing community for years
to come.
For those who recognize the value of living
within the service area of these two great
resources, please consider how you can make a
personally meaningful financial commitment
to the Campaign. Support of many who are
close to the hospitals – employees, physicians,
foundations, board members and volunteers –
has brought the Campaign total to nearly
$31 million toward a goal of $56 million.
