DAY 2: SANTA MARI´A – QELLOMAYO – SANTA
TERESA
The second day is a little more intense. We will be
walking from Santa María to Santa Teresa. We will be
leaving at 8:00 AM and arriving at our final destination
around 5:30 PM, but with many stops along the way.
We will be walking a total of 8 hours. We will be
walking through the jungle, up mountains, through
rivers, all while our guide will be giving information on
the typical plants and vegetation of the region. You
will be walking among mango trees, avocados,
papayas and coffee plantation and coca leaf
plantations (the sacred lead of the Incas), which are
legally cultivated by the Peruvian government
authorization.
The best part of this day is going to be the hour and a
half that we get to walk along the original Inca Trail.
The Incan trails are built with stones found only in the
mountain region of Peru. The views are incredible; this
road will pass through the highest point we will be
accessing during the trek. We will be stopping to rest
in the “tambo,” in the same location that the chaskis
stopped to rest during their long voyages. Chaskis are
the messengers of the Incas. The chaskis would travel
extremely long distances, all along the Incan roads,
carrying quipus, a knotted twine which had very high
significance pertaining to a number and accounting
system that the Incas used.
After some 7 hours of trekking we will arrive at the
Santa Teresa hot spring called “Qolcalmayo.” The
setting is a true paradise, a truly spectacular sight and
experience with pools containing water that reaches
30* C. After this we will continue our journey to the
town of Santa Teresa, located 20 minutes away, where
we will stay for the night and enjoy a nice good
shower.
MEALS: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
DAY 3: SANTA TERESA – HIDROELECTRICA –
MACCHU PICCHU PUEBLO
We will be beginning our day around 6:00 Am in order
to enjoy a hearty breakfast then visit the jungle canopy
known as “Cola de Mono.” Here you will have the
option of ziplining through the jungle. There will be
anchored cables connecting one mountain to another,
allowing a person to zip thorugh a pulley attached to a
waist harness.
This canopy is the highest in South America. The cable
runs a full 2500 meters in length, it is divided into 6
sections, were the longest is over 400 meters from
end to end and the highest measures is 150 meters tall.
The tour lasts around 2 hours and the point of
departure and arrival are aerial platforms installed in
soil and rock. The maximum speed of the slidding
cable is 60 km/h.
After finishing our canopy experience we will be taking
a walk through the valley floor of Santa Teresa to
Hidroeléctrica, approximately a 2.5-hours. The walk will
consist of landscape bordered by mountains. Once we
reach Hidroeléctrica, we will have a comfortable lunch
and continue our hike to Aguas Calientes. In order to
reach Aguas Calientes we will be walking an additional
3 hours, along the banks of the river as well as by
railway tracks where we will arrive in Aguas Calientes
where you will be able to glimpse your first sight of
Machu Picchu.
Once we arrive in Aguas Calientes we will eat dinner
and spend our last night a hostel.
Optional: you will be able to visit the hot springs this
night for an additional fee of around $4.
MEALS: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner
DAY 4: MACHU PICCHU “SUNRISE” – FULL DAY
We will begin our day at 4:00 Am, immediately after
breakfast we will leave for Machu Picchu. We will
begin our last stretch of this epic journey trekking 1.5
hours in order to see the sun rise in the Incan city of
Pachu Picchu. We will arrive in Machu Picchu around
6:00 Am.
We will then have a 2 hour guided tour and visit the
most important complexes of the site. After this you
have free time to explore the mysterious Incan city at
your own pace and discretion. At this time you can visit
the Incan Bridge, the Puerta del Sol and much more.
For many travelers, the visit to the lost cities of the
Incas is the highlight of their trip to South America. It is
a magical place, the most spectacular archaeological
site on the continent, with a stunning location and a
mysterious past.
Optional: After the guided tour you have the option of
climbing the Huayna Picchu (2720m/8923ft)! Climbing
this mountain takes around 45 minutes. There are
government rangers and the stretch you will be
walking is along the Incan Trail, for which the Peruvian
government has added more security. Once you reach
the top you will have breathtaking views of all of
Machu Picchu.
After the tour of Machu Picchu we will take a bus from
