INCA JUNGLE TOUR. 4 days / 3 Nights Includes: Cycling, River Rafting, Trekking and Zipline Highlight: Sunrise in Machu Picchu The rainforest of Machu Picchu offers a new route, which consists of a combination of biking and walking to the Inca city of Machu Picchu. You will get to experience the royal road of the Incas and the archaeological ruins that were discovered all while taking advantage of the beautiful landscapes along the way. You will also get to see plantations filled with the Incas sacred “Hoja Sagrada” or coca leaf which are grown legally and with Peruvian Government authorization. Take advantage of this Cycling and walking adventure in the Peruvian Jungle, a four-day trip, which ends with a breathtaking sunrise inside the Inca city of Machu Picchu and a guided tour. I N K A J U N G L R T O U R DETAILED PROGRAM DAY 1: CUSCO – ABRA MALGA – ALFAMAYUC – SANTA MARIA (CYCLING) At 7:30 AM we start the excursion, all meeting at Maximo Nivel. We leave by 8:00 AM and go by van passing by the Sacred Valley of the Incas. We will then begin crossing the snowy Abra Malaga mountains with an altitude for 4,350 meters and descend to Alframayuc, where we will begin our descent on mountain bikes. Once we have all our gear ready, we will begin our descent down the road. Once on the bike you will get to look forward to ridding down the road and running through streams along the way that will surely soak you through and through while having the time of your life. This part of the trek will lead us to the town of Santa María. After a hardy lunch, we will begin getting ready for our next adventure. We will take a 1.5 hours boat tour of the Sacred Vilcanota River. During this tour you will discover the beautiful landscapes, encounter rapids cla ss 2,3 and 3+ (during the dry season), which will lead to an intense and exciting journey. All accompanied with a necessary safety precautions needed to navigate these waters. The rapids in this part of the river are considered the best of Cusco, and the warm weather makes this a once in a lifetime unforgettable adventure. The bus will be waiting to take us back to the city of Santa María where we will eat dinner and we will spend our first night in a local family house. Meals: Lunch and Dinner DAY 2: SANTA MARI´A – QELLOMAYO – SANTA TERESA The second day is a little more intense. We will be walking from Santa María to Santa Teresa. We will be leaving at 8:00 AM and arriving at our final destination around 5:30 PM, but with many stops along the way. We will be walking a total of 8 hours. We will be walking through the jungle, up mountains, through rivers, all while our guide will be giving information on the typical plants and vegetation of the region. You will be walking among mango trees, avocados, papayas and coffee plantation and coca leaf plantations (the sacred lead of the Incas), which are legally cultivated by the Peruvian government authorization. The best part of this day is going to be the hour and a half that we get to walk along the original Inca Trail. The Incan trails are built with stones found only in the mountain region of Peru. The views are incredible; this road will pass through the highest point we will be accessing during the trek. We will be stopping to rest in the “tambo,” in the same location that the chaskis stopped to rest during their long voyages. Chaskis are the messengers of the Incas. The chaskis would travel extremely long distances, all along the Incan roads, carrying quipus, a knotted twine which had very high significance pertaining to a number and accounting system that the Incas used. After some 7 hours of trekking we will arrive at the Santa Teresa hot spring called “Qolcalmayo.” The setting is a true paradise, a truly spectacular sight and experience with pools containing water that reaches 30* C. After this we will continue our journey to the town of Santa Teresa, located 20 minutes away, where we will stay for the night and enjoy a nice good shower. MEALS: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner DAY 3: SANTA TERESA – HIDROELECTRICA – MACCHU PICCHU PUEBLO We will be beginning our day around 6:00 Am in order to enjoy a hearty breakfast then visit the jungle canopy known as “Cola de Mono.” Here you will have the option of ziplining through the jungle. There will be anchored cables connecting one mountain to another, allowing a person to zip thorugh a pulley attached to a waist harness. This canopy is the highest in South America. The cable runs a full 2500 meters in length, it is divided into 6 sections, were the longest is over 400 meters from end to end and the highest measures is 150 meters tall. The tour lasts around 2 hours and the point of departure and arrival are aerial platforms installed in soil and rock. The maximum speed of the slidding cable is 60 km/h. After finishing our canopy experience we will be taking a walk through the valley floor of Santa Teresa to Hidroeléctrica, approximately a 2.5-hours. The walk will consist of landscape bordered by mountains. Once we reach Hidroeléctrica, we will have a comfortable lunch and continue our hike to Aguas Calientes. In order to reach Aguas Calientes we will be walking an additional 3 hours, along the banks of the river as well as by railway tracks where we will arrive in Aguas Calientes where you will be able to glimpse your first sight of Machu Picchu. Once we arrive in Aguas Calientes we will eat dinner and spend our last night a hostel. Optional: you will be able to visit the hot springs this night for an additional fee of around $4. MEALS: Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner DAY 4: MACHU PICCHU “SUNRISE” – FULL DAY We will begin our day at 4:00 Am, immediately after breakfast we will leave for Machu Picchu. We will begin our last stretch of this epic journey trekking 1.5 hours in order to see the sun rise in the Incan city of Pachu Picchu. We will arrive in Machu Picchu around 6:00 Am. We will then have a 2 hour guided tour and visit the most important complexes of the site. After this you have free time to explore the mysterious Incan city at your own pace and discretion. At this time you can visit the Incan Bridge, the Puerta del Sol and much more. For many travelers, the visit to the lost cities of the Incas is the highlight of their trip to South America. It is a magical place, the most spectacular archaeological site on the continent, with a stunning location and a mysterious past. Optional: After the guided tour you have the option of climbing the Huayna Picchu (2720m/8923ft)! Climbing this mountain takes around 45 minutes. There are government rangers and the stretch you will be walking is along the Incan Trail, for which the Peruvian government has added more security. Once you reach the top you will have breathtaking views of all of Machu Picchu. After the tour of Machu Picchu we will take a bus from Machu Picchu back to Aguas Calientes. You will then, once again, meet with your guide who will take you to the train station where you will begin your journey back to Cusco. You will arrive in Cusco approximately around 10:30 PM.
