Chile Energy Roundtable: How can Chile reduce energy costs? June 24, 2014 • Santiago, Chile • Hotel Intercontinental Las Condes Background On May 15, Chilean President Michelle Bachelet announced her administration’s “energy agenda.” The plan seeks to avoid an energy crisis in a country that imports 97 percent of its fossil fuels and depends on hydropower for 42 percent of its electricity generation. The “energy agenda” is aimed at reducing energy prices and sets forth a strong role for the Chilean government in planning, regulating and managing energy supplies. In addition, the plan promotes non‐conventional renewable energy development and the interconnection of the nation’s two power grids, as well as transforming the role of national oil company ENAP and boosting liquefied natural gas (LNG) capacity. The roundtable is set to coincide with the 100 day mark of the Bachelet administration. Panels will assess the concrete steps for action being proposed, the need to move past diagnosis, finding areas for dialogue between the government, NGO’s and private sector, incentivizing competition in the electric generation market, and where sources such as natural gas/LNG, coal, and renewables fit in Chile’s energy matrix.
