15 Years on the Eiffel Tower
In 2009, the Eiffel Tower
celebrates
its
120th
anniversary, and remains
today the most loved and the
most visited historic structure
in the world.
15 Years of

Technology
gy
For 15 years OSMOS has
continuously monitored the
main structures of the Eiffel
Tower. The daily, seasonal
and pluri-annual deformation cycles are now perfectly
known and fed into a data
bank which allows detection
of any modification of the
structure’s behavior well
ahead of time. During these
15 years, OSMOS has
developed
unceasingly
monitoring
technology
dedicated to absolute safety
of infrastructures, and has
become the uncontested
leader in the field.
Thanks to the many purposes
that Gustave Eiffel conceived
for it - and most especially
thanks to his inspired vision
of an “elegant and durable”
structure - the “300 meter
Tower” is a structure, whose
technical and architectural
aspects remain unsurpassed.
In 1993, OSMOS installed
Optical Strands the main
structures of the Eiffel Tower.
Was it really possible to
monitor both the static and
dynamic behavior of a
structure? To obtain a clean
signal without fail and without
interference, a signal bearing
information on the actual
state of the structure?
The Société d’Exploitation de
la Tour Eiffel (S.E.T.E.)
thought so and entrusted
OSMOS.
OSMOS and its partners
monitor
hundreds
of
structures throughout the
world. Some are famous
and
others
are
less
spectacular, but all are
equally important to us to
serve infrastructure owners
and the collectivity.
We would like to thank the S.E.T.E. for their 15 years of confidence.
We share this symbolic and prestigious reference with our partners, which use the OSMOS technology day after day in
the world.
Finally we are very proud to serve in the preservation of the Gustave Eiffel

What all specialists know
All civil engineering infrastructures: bridges,
dams, tunnels or buildings… age. The
structure fatigue increases without it
always being visible. Whether the risk
comes from a premature fatigue or from a
construction defect, no bridge is 100% safe
according to experts.

With OSMOS, there will be no more
uncertainty. No bridge, no civil engineering
infrastructure will surprise you ever again.

When, in a large number of cases, the
objectives require an observation of all the
parameters over a sufficiently long period,
OSMOS provides new solutions perfectly in
line with these objectives.
To all those who are involved in ensuring
public safety, including politicians and civil
engineers, OSMOS provides easy and
accessible safety monitoring techniques to
meet their demands for the conservation
and maintenance of the pools of
infrastructures they are responsible for.
15 years on the Eiffel Tower
At a time when responsible management and sustainable development are
economic and political priorities,
The OSMOS Group clearly positions itself as a Global Risk Manager,
actively involved in preventive maintenance and durability of infrastructures,
and fully dedicated to pools of infrastructures in both the public and private
sector.
OSMOS:
‰ Detects the smallest weakness in a structure as soon as it appears
‰ Allows corrective actions at low cost
‰ Ensures the continued use of the structure and ultimately
‰ Lengthens the life of the structure safely.
As a result:
‰ Better use of resources
‰ No more constraints of emergency for operators and
‰ Reduction in risk level

City of New York
“I want to thank you very much for the significant volunteer effort made by OSMOS to help the City of
New York to respond to the consequences of the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001. The sensors that
OSMOS installed at and around the World Trade Center site were an important
p
tool for assessingg the
structures of 3 World Financial Center (AMEX) and 130 Liberty Street (Bankers Trust).”
Kenneth HOLDEN, New York City Commissionner
Orsay Museum
"The OSMOS system has allowed us to optimize our
interventions without stopping the museum activity."
Olivier MOREAU, Technical Controller

the system OSMOS is the
ability to continuously
monitor both rapid and

deformations. The

crucial information on
major civil engineering

clearly an advantage in
terms of safety.”

“The OSMOS system gives us
complete satisfaction and
remains reliable over time.
Its simple design and use
are advantages sought after
for installation in major structures.”

us to verify the

of this complex

Alain Trouvé,
Technical
Manager
Eiffel Tower
“The patrimonial conservation of the EIFFEL Tower monument requires constant
monitoring of its evolution.
The system set up by the company OSMOS on the Tower, and well-tried for 15 years
now, fully fulfills that mission.
The OSMOS system is a valuable aid to decision-making, and a source of savings in
both time and money! "
Stéphane ROUSSIN, Head of the Structure Department of the Eiffel Tower
Company of Certified Insurance Experts
«The monitoring system developed by OSMOS indicates the stresses imposed on structures - whether
they display damage or not - and enables timely intervention. We have had the opportunity to test the
extreme efficiency of this system both in terms of risk prevention (comprehensive building site policies)
and claims assessment.»
Michel Dubernard, Expert in Insurance
Vézelay Basilica – World Heritage Site
«The Basilica of Vézelay can hardly be modelled by conventional methods. The
OSMOS system, installed discreetly on the whole structure, gives us exploitable
information to qualify the real state of the Basilica.»
