Shell’s HSSE Mission
Our People…
• Drive nearly 1.5 billion kilometres per year
• Build and maintain plants in extreme
conditions
• Work on offshore platforms and run
refineries and chemical plants
Our Mission…
• Our goal is zero harm to people &
environment
• Build a strong safety culture
• Mitigate critical HSSE risks
Using Analytics to Improve our Safety Process
Real-time safety data, or near to it
• Give the organization as much time as possible to take
action and reduce incidents
Move from lagging indicators to leading
• Track incident pre-cursors, prevent injuries before they
happen
Require ease of use for adoption and speed
• Increase participation through higher data interactivity
• Speed turnaround and reduce crunch time work through
automation
Foster Depth and Detail
• Make it clear how the organization should respond by
providing both high level trends and incident level details
• Transparency allows easy spotting of any errors which
might arise
Implementing Change
Existing Tools and Approach
• Manual spreadsheet reports did not
contain ‘live’ data and take up to 30
minutes to run
• Separate reports for each location or
site – no drill down or correlation
across the organization
• Each analyst developed their own
reports (or modified existing reports)
for each area, hard to enforce best
practice
Implementing Change
Challenges
• Long hours during peak periods – time to try something new?
• Large volume of data and limited IT resources
• IT limitations at remote locations – slow load times would not be
successful
• Traditional approach is not ideal but “works”
• Needed to offer the business significant advantages to adopt the change
Demonstrating the Solution
• Link Spotfire Server directly to
safety database (Fountain Incident
Management) via Information
Links
• Spotfire Web Player with 6-12 hour
scheduled updates gives
interactive analysis of current data
in a browser

The “Outcomes”
My life before Spotfire:
My life after Spotfire:
The Outcomes (Non-Dilbert)
Faster access to important safety data
• Moved from monthly reviews to continuous analysis, making data part of
ongoing dialog
Increasing adoption over time
• Testing with stakeholders in 2009, widespread by 2010
• Ease of use & Web Player are key to bringing a wider community
Making program benefits tangible
• Can now easily see the difference our safety program implementations
make in peoples lives, helps to justify ongoing investment
Changing how Shell leaders view safety data
• Active tool to manage safety process not just another report to review
