In the Garden
Look what I found! A host of golden daffodils
growing right in the Tyler Rose Garden, but you
must look behind the camellias along the
walkway about halfway through the camellia
garden. There they were---just gloriously
blooming. Needless to say they made my day.
February Gold, a perfect name for this little
narcissus of the ‘Cyclamineus’ group that
blooms on time, in February. I have always
loved yellow flowers anytime of the year, but in
winter, when everything is dull and gray, yellow
just sings out to your soul. Seeing a patch of
gold like this is guaranteed to make you
happy. These are the little brown bulbs planted in fall, looking for all the world like a bit of dead brown
husk, but look at the promise that was in that bit of brown!
February is one of my favorite months because the earth is stretching and yawning, ready to start
waking up. Granted she may hit the snooze button a few times before her grand awakening, but now is
when we need anything she can give us by way of color. There is nothing more fun than walking
through the garden every day, looking to see what is ready to pop, or what is unfolding. What fun to
see all the faces of dainty little wildflowers that grow in the lawn, the different bulbs that are all ready
for their spring debuts, and seeing all the buds on forsythia, bridal wreath, and other early
bloomers. Flowers are so important to a gardener who is in tune with all the cycles of nature. Every
little thing calls out to our spirits for the new awakening of spring.
Come out to see our gardens on one of these lovely winter days and look for all the color that is there,
but look also for the color that is getting ready to explode into the riot of spring.
