US Marines stormed the Island and helped. - President Grover Cleveland was very against annexation and thought it was shameful. People wanted it thought, so they merely waited until he was out of office. - 1898 war with Spain means Hawaii would be a great naval base (we already have Pearl Harbor) on the way to the Philippines, and McKinley annexes HI as a territory after the war until 1959 when it becomes a state.
