Then they placed one color tile for each word they heard in the sentence. The teacher repeats the sentence as a child touches each square. Finally they count the total number of tiles. We learn to: • Understand phonological awareness • Understand how words combine to form sentences We learn it by: • Segmenting sentences WORLD Element Math Counts Activity: EDM: Nursery Rhyme Sequence – The children were given a set of “Humpty Dumpty” cards to put in order of the rhyme. Some also worked on “Itsy Bitsy Spider” cards. We learn to: • Sequence Events • Describe a sequence of events using the terms such as first, second, third, next, last We learn it by: • Putting the cards in order of what happened first, second, and last WORLD Element STEM Lab Activity: Melt an Ice Cube with Water – The children worked in pairs. Each group was given an ice cube. We filled cups up with water. The children took turns using a pipette to squirt water over their ice cube. Some children poured the entire cup of water over the ice cube. Others swirled the ice cube in water. We learn to: • Explore how properties can change • Independently develop hypotheses, make predictions, plan investigations an draw conclusions We learn it by: • Participating in the melting ice cube experiment Reminders Classroom: Kindergarten Prep What in the World Happened Today Date: 12.1.15 Teacher(s): Ms. Kelly & Ms. Quiana Highlights WORLD Element Math Counts Activity: EDM: Exploration of Capacity –The children poured water into different sized containers. As they worked they began counting how many cups it took to fill the bottles. We learn to: • Use standard or non-standard measurement tools to problem solve or plan • Understand spatial relations and proportions We learn it by: • Using multiple-sized measuring cups and containers in the water table WORLD Element Science Rocks Activity: Inclines – The children used the tall planks to create inclines. They placed the blocks on top of the shelf creating steep inclines. Then they released cars to see which car went the farthest or shortest. We learn to: • Experiment with motion and velocity We learn it by: • Sending cars down ramps of different sizes and angles and measuring the distance WORLD Element Art Smart Activity: Music: “Walk in the Woods” – The children walked around the Art Studio tapping their rhythm sticks as we began a story about “A Walk in the Woods.” They requested to do “Going on a Bear Hunt.” We sang that instead while tapping our rhythm sticks to different beats. We learn to: • Recognize, repeat, and compose rhythmic patterns and melodies We learn it by: • Replicate complex tapping patterns Reminders Classroom: Kindergarten Prep What in the World Happened Today Date: 12.2.15 Teacher(s): Ms. Kelly & Ms. Quiana Highlights WORLD Element Math Counts Activity: EDM: Straws in a Row – The children selected four straws and put them in order from smallest to longest. We learn to: • Compare and contrast items • Understand sequential relationships • Use appropriate language to describe and compare length We learn it by: • Placing items in graduated order WORLD Element Our World Activity: Cleaning up our materials – Several children worked others to return our materials to their proper places. We learn to: • Understand and take responsibility for our personal impact on the environment We learn it by: • Cleaning up, caring for our belongings, and helping in the classroom WORLD Element 21st Technology Math Counts Reminders Activity: SB: I Can See Shapes Everywhere - The children took turns tracing a given shape in a picture on the smart board. We learn to: • Use developmentally appropriate technology independently in purposeful ways • Understand properties of specific shapes We learn it by: • Using the smart board. • Finding/identifying shapes in images Classroom: Kindergarten Prep What in the World Happened Today Date: 12.3.15 Teacher(s): Ms. Kelly & Ms. Quiana Highlights WORLD Element Language Works Art Smart Activity: Add a Character – First we listed characters from Diary of a Worm. Then children recalled and recited “Humpty Dumpty.” Next they changed the story by adding Jack and Jill, playing Ring Around the Rosie, and jumping. We learn to: • Identify and recall parts of a story such as the characters • Plan extended skits and dramatizations in collaboration with peers We learn it by: • Listening to literature an identifying components of the story, Changing the ending to Nursery Rhymes WORLD Element Math Counts Science Rocks Activity: Making Play Dough – The children took turns measuring and adding ingredients to make play dough. Many began making cookies, and cutting the dough with cookie cutters, knives, and scissors. We learn to: • Use standard measurement tools • Explore how properties can change We learn it by: • Measuring ingredients with cups and spoons • Participate in mixing play dough - that alters the physical properties WORLD Element Well Aware Reminders Activity: Dribbling Balls – The children worked with a partner bouncing the ball. They took turns dribbling. We learn to: • Coordinate multiple muscle movements • Enjoy and seek out physical activities We learn it by: • Playing basketball with a partner Classroom: Kindergarten Prep What in the World Happened Today Date: 12.4.15 Teacher(s): Ms. Kelly & Ms. Quiana Highlights WORLD Element Art Studio Activity: Watercolor & Salt Paintings – The children applied watercolor paint with a paint brush. Next some used their fingers to sprinkle salt over their pictures. Others poured the salt from the cup. A few moved the salt around their paper using a paintbrush. We learn to: • Use art materials and tools purposefully and creatively • Experiment with visual media and materials We learn it by: • Exploring the art materials and media WORLD Element Language Works Art Smart Activity: Set the Stage – During our meeting the children named their favorite story. We discussed what props we would need to act out Jack and Jill. We decided we could build a hill with blocks, use cups as a pail, create paper crowns, and needed a water fountain. In small groups the children re-enacted Jack and Jill. We learn to: • Demonstrate comprehension • Plan dramatizations in collaboration with peers We learn it by: • Acting out Jack and Jill • Creating a stage, finding props WORLD Element Math Counts Activity: Shape Switch – In small groups, each child selected two different shapes. They listened as a teacher called out a shape or properties of a shape. Then the children holding that shape switched places with another child holding that same shape. We learn to: • Understand properties of specific shapes • Follow directions We learn it by: • Playing geometry games such as Shape Switch Reminders Have a FABULOUS Weekend!
