December 6, 2013
Dear Parents or Guardians,
Now that we have completed the first trimester of the 2013/2014 school year, it’s a perfect time
to reflect on your child’s homework habits and make changes as needed. I hope the following
homework guidelines and suggestions will provide more success in school and less stress at
home!
Homework is assigned to reinforce concepts learned at school and to provide additional
practice of skills. In addition, it encourages responsibility, organization, and time management.
The following time frames serve as guidelines for the amount of time your child(ren) should
spend on homework each night:
Kindergarten and First Grade-approximately 10 minutes
Second Grade-approximately 20 minutes
Third and Fourth Grade-approximately 30 minutes
To help homework time be productive it’s important to establish good homework habits. Start
by helping your child get organized:
•
•
•
•
•
Use a calendar and write in due dates and test dates together.
Use assignment notebooks provided to 3rd and 4th graders and check them off when
they are finished.
Provide a consistent place and time to do homework.
Discuss homework assignments with your child before they get started. For example,
when will you study for your spelling test? What supplies will you need for your project?
Check on your child's progress by asking to look over math problems or offering to test
him/her on spelling words.
If your child is having difficulties completing their homework, make sure he/she understands
the homework instructions by reviewing them together. Suggest ways to make the work easier
to finish. Think of yourself as a coach, guiding and cheering them on from the sidelines.
Encourage them to do their best. If they continue to have trouble with instructions and are
spending too much time on homework, contact their teacher.
Let’s work together to make the time spent on homework a success!
Sincerely,
Vince Murray!
