Yarrow (Achilles millefolium L.)
Family: Aster or Sunflower
Habitat: very widespread throughout N. America, open fields, roadsides
Description: soft almost feather like leaves, herbaceous perennial, rhizome root, white
flowers sometimes pink, flower has 5 tiny petals and each ray has 3 teeth at tip,
flowers in flat topped clusters, aromatic leaves, single stalked plant,
Harvest: Year round, but best when fresh and succulent
Dangers: Don’t confuse for plants in parsley family such as hemlock; parsley plants
have compound umbels which means all flower heads radiate from one single point
which yarrow does not
Medicinal: One of the most powerful medicinal plants in N. America, numbing
qualities for pain treatment external wounds, over a dozen extremely strong antiinflammatory compounds, tea for colds or illness and mix with aspirin (salicin) bearing
plants such as willow/winter green for best results, expectorant and analgesic, strong
hemostatic properties for stopping blood loss internal/external, poultice for external
wounds, dried leaves/flowers powdered for quick clot, astringent, the flowers and root
are most potent portions, insect repellant, excellent salve addition, use fresh leaves to
stop nose bleeds, chew root for tooth ache works to numb mouth, make yarrow and
jewelweed salve for extremely powerful poison ivy treatment, excellent for women’s
menstrual problems, soak plants in water for cleansing solution, poultice for
boils/pimples, hundreds of uses

