The mitzvah of preparing a
Jewish person for burial is a

Hakol: “The Voice”
IN GRATITUDE
By Rabbi Shawn B. Zell
o white person who is prejudiced against Jews,
Italians, Catholics, German (sic) or any other racial or
religious group does actually like Colored persons.”
So wrote Judge Hubert Delany, a board member of
the NAACP in a scathing letter responding to charges
made by Lucille Miller of Madison Wisconsin, that
Judge Delany was desirous of turning the NAACP
over to (Henry) Wallace Progressives and their
friends the Communists. Commenting on Miss Miller’s accusation that “New York Communist Jewish
students are spearheading a move to destroy our Madison (Wisconsin) chapter”, Judge Delany continued:
“I cannot understand how a person like you who pretends to believe in equality and to be free from prejudice and pretends to like Colored people, can at the
same time hate Jews in the manner that your letter
indicates you do”.
In addition to being the first Black Tax Commissioner of New York City, Hubert Delany served as United
States attorney for the southern district of New York.
Throughout his career, Judge Delany sat on any number of committees and boards and championed a variety of causes.
Equally important, Judge Delany shattered stereotypes. At a time when so many of Americans were
quick to typecast Blacks as porters on trains and waiters in restaurants, Judge Delany showed us that at
least in the northeast of these United States, it was
possible albeit fairly unlikely for a Black to break
through into the upper echelons of society. Not that it
was all smooth sailing. During a visit to Hartford
Connecticut in the mid ‘50’s to speak on juvenile delinquency, the Statler Hotel denied Judge Delany a
room for the night, on the basis of race, despite the
fact that the Judge had made advance reservations.
For those of us with a penchant for American history,
Page 2
where we are quick to
pat ourselves on the back
for the role Jews played
in championing civil
right for Black Americans,
Judge Delany
showed us the other side
of the coin. As surprising
as it may be for some of us, there were occasions
where Black Americans stood up for Jews and defended us against Jew haters.
Perhaps most informative of all, is that in the Spring
of 1956, the Government of Israel invited Judge
Delany to Tel Aviv to serve as a consultant to Israel’s
Minister of Justice (although both preceded as well as
succeeded by Pinchas Rosen, it was Prime Minister
David Ben Gurion who headed the Ministry of Justice from February 16, 1956 until January 7, 1958) to
study juvenile delinquency and assist in the reorganization of Israel’s Domestic Relations Courts.
As one who has absolutely no idea whatsoever what
the curriculum consists of for Black history month, I
hope and pray that somewhere in this country, students learn about Judge Hubert Delany, a leader that
any Black American has every reason to be so very
proud of. Similarly, I hope and pray that somewhere
in this country, Jewish students learn about Judge Hubert Delany, an leader that any Jewish American has
every reason to be so very grateful for.

Did You Know?
If a family member dies during the month of Adar during a
regular year, Yahrzeit is observed on Adar I of a leap year.
While no Yahrzeit should be observed (lighting of Yahrzeit
candle) on Adar II, nevertheless Kaddish should be recited.

analogy, in Judaism there is no such
thing as an over-the-hill person.
There is only a wise person with
many years of life experiences to
help improve the world. No mandatory retirement at the age of 65 for
you, that age is only the beginning of
your Jewish learning journey. One of
the greatest examples of transforming oneself is Rabbi Akiva who was
an unlearned shepherd in his youth,
and at the age of 40 began his study
of Torah for an uninterrupted 24
years.
There is a common expression that
age is just a “state of mind.” We all

Young or old – time is our most valuable possession, spend it wisely on

being the best you can be.
I would like to leave you with a
quote by Joel Brown, a motivational

is given to you.”

Opportunities to Honor People
Tiferet Israel has many opportunities for you to memorialize loved ones, honor others as they reach milestones, or show much they mean to you. The following are several ways to offer meaningful acknowledgement of
Bible Fund — Dedicate a Chumash in honor of someone, or
Religious School Scholarship Funds:
as a memorial. A dedication sticker will be placed in the
Chumash with your name, as well as the person you are honoring or memorializing.
Building Fund — Support the upkeep and improvement of
the Tiferet Israel building.
Community Garden Fund — Support the continuing
success and “growth” of the TIKVA Tiferet Community Garden.
General Fund — Support the operations, programming,
expenses and upkeep of Tiferet Israel.
Prayerbook Fund — Dedicate a Siddur in honor of someone, or as a memorial. A dedication sticker will be placed in the
Siddur with your name, as well as the person you are honoring
or memorializing.
Rabbi’s Discretionary Fund — The Rabbi uses these
funds at his discretion for assisting those in need or special
programs.
Religious School—Support our Religious School Program.
Boruch Frishman Scholarship Fund
Florence & Esir Tobolowsky Education Fund
Mort Robin Scholarship Fund
Sarah Soltes Scholarship Fund
Stanley J. Schepps Scholarship Fund
Sadie Samuelsohn Book Fund — Support the library and
book-related needs.
Sunshine Fund — Funds provide Shiva trays to homes of
mourning, flowers for new mothers, simcha greetings, and
visitation of the sick.
The Tree of Life — Purchase a leaf for $125 to honor someone or to memorialize a loved one.
Yahrzeit Plaques — Add a plaque to the Tiferet Memorials
