I dare not ask for an improved memory,

cocksureness when my memory seems
to clash with the memories of others.
Teach me the glorious lesson that occasionally I may be mistaken. Keep me
reasonably sweet; I do not want to be a

unexpected people. And give me, O Lord, the grace to tell them
so. Amen
I think I could do worse than repeat this every day myself
How about you?

Could you change a child’s future?
Do you enjoy spending time with young people? Perhaps you
have brought up your own children who have now left home?
There are teenagers in Gateshead who need your help. Gateshead Council is urgently looking for people like you to foster
teenagers, to offer them a home, stability and security.
Teenage years can be difficult for anyone, but for a young person who has gone through a distressing upbringing, it can be
especially unsettling. This is a critical stage in their lives which
will seriously affect their future and you can make a difference.
Gateshead Council’s fostercarers come from all walks of life,
just like the children who need to be looked after. There’s no
such thing as atypical carer. We're looking for people who are
patient, flexible, understanding, determined and keen to learn.
Deciding to foster a child is a big decision. It will not only
change the life of the child you foster, but your life and that of
your family – but in a good way. Gateshead Council offers a
team of specialist staff and comprehensive training package to
support you all of the way in addition to a generous payment
package.
If you think you have what it takes and
want to know more, please visit
www.gateshead.gov.uk/fostering or call
0191 433 8333.

Graces for ovember
God bless our meat,
God guide our ways,
God ge us grace
Our Lord to please. Amen
O Lord of heaven and earth and sea,
To thee all praise and glory be;
How shall we show our love to thee,
who givest all?
For peaceful homes and healthful days,
We owe thee thankfulness and praise,
Who givest all.
Bless to me, O God,
each odour that goes to my nostrils.
Bless to me, O God,
each taste that goes to my lips. Amen
The eyes of all await upon thee, O Lord,
and thou givest them their food in due season.
Thou openest thy hand.
and fillest every living thing with thy blessing.
Sanctify us, we beseech thee, O Lord,
By thy word and our petition;
and bless the gifts which of thy bounty weare about to
receive; through Jesus Christ our Lord.
Amen

Saint of the Month
Leo the Great, Bishop
of Rome, Teacher of
the faith
Born in Rome and died there in 461
Feast Day 10 November
Leo was elected Pope in 440 at a time of great crisis in both
church and Roman empire. In 451 the fourth general council
of the church met at Chalcedon where under Leo’s
influence and writings the orthodox doctrine on the nature of
Christ’s two natures (human and divine) was first agreed.
In the following year Leo personally met with Attilla the
Hun and persuaded him to withdraw beyond the Danube.
He was not able to stop the Vandals occupying Rome in 455
but was able to prevent a massacre. Such actions are typical
and representative of his determination to meet the demands
of his day firmly and authoratively. He saw the need to
strengthen the influence of the Roman church. He extended
his influence into Spain, Gaul, Illyricum and North Africa.
He was typical of the best in Roman character – energetic,
magnanimous, consistent and unswerving in his sense of
duty all firmly anchored in his religious faith. Few of his
written works survive but he was an important influence in
the early history of the papacy and of the church.

Question: "What does IHS mean?"
Answer: George Eliot’s novel Silas Marner
contains a scene in which a townswoman named
Dolly Winthrop brings Silas some lard cakes with
the letters IHS baked into the top of each one. The
irony is that neither Dolly nor Silas knows what the letters mean. Dolly
simply puts IHS on her baked goods because she sees the letters in her
church every Sunday and assumes there is some benefit to them. Her
explanation is rather droll: “They’re good letters, else they wouldn’t be in
the church; and so, I prick ’em on all the loaves and all the cakes, though
sometimes they won’t hold, because o’ the rising . . . and I hope they’ll
bring good to you, Master Marner, for it’s wi’ that will I brought you the
cakes; and you see the letters have held better nor common” (chapter 10).
Unlike Mrs. Winthrop, we need not remain ignorant of what IHS means.
IHS is an example of a Christogram, an abbreviation of the name of Christ.
It is a Latinized version of the Greek letters ΙΗΣ (iota-eta-sigma), the first
three letters of the name “Jesus” in Greek. So, the IHS symbol means
“Jesus.” Other Christograms include ICXC (the first and last letters of the
name “Jesus Christ” in Greek) and a superimposed X and P (the first two
letters of “Christ” in Greek).

OVEMBER The name comes from the Roman word 'novem' meaning
nine, because it was the ninth month in their Roman calendar.
Few people find November pleasant. The Anglo-Saxons called November
'Wind monath', because it was the time when the cold winds began to blow.
They also called it 'Blod monath', because it was the time when cattle were
slaughtered for winter food. The poet T.S. Elliot called it 'Sombre November'. Sir Walter Scott, in his long poem Marmion, wrote in 1808:
ovember's sky is chill and drear,
ovember's leaf is red and sear (withered)'
The first week of November has always been a time of festivals and
celebrations marking the end of the harvest and beginning of Winter.
In the year 835 AD the Roman Catholic Church made 1st November a church
holiday to honour all the saints. This feast day is called All Saints' Day.
All Hallows
All Saints' Day used to be known as All Hallows (Hallow being an old word
meaning Saint or Holy Person). The feast day actually started the previous
evening, the Eve of All Hallows.
Christians remember all the saints
On Saints' Day, Christians remember all 'men of good will' (saints), great
ones and forgotten ones, who have died through the ages.
Saints are men and women from all ages and all walks of life, who were outstanding Christians. Some - the martyrs - died for their faith. All of them are
honoured by the church.
Before the Reformation, it was customary for poor Christians to offer prayers
for the dead, in return for money or food , soul cakes, from their wealthier
neighbours.
Souling:- During the 19th and 20th centuries children would go 'souling' rather like carol singing - requesting alms or soul cakes:
A soul, a soul, a soul cake.
Please good missus a soul cake.
An apple, a pear, a plum or a cherry,
Any good thing to make us merry.
Up with your kettles and down with your pans
Give us an answer and we'll be gone
Little Jack, Jack sat on his gate
Crying for butter to butter his cake
One for St. Peter, two for St. Paul,
Three for the man who made us all.
The 'Soulers' would go around the houses singing this
song and often joined by their old friend, the hobby horse - only at this time
of the year, he is called the Hooden Horse.
A Soul Cake is like a hot cross bun but without the currants or the cross on
top.

Christmas Traidcraft
As in the last few years I will be selling Advent Calendars and
Christmas Cards as well as the usual biscuits and chocolates
after church. All goods benefit people through the Fair Trade
organisation and any profit or donation is given to Christian Aid.
The Advent Calendars cost £4.00 each and I have bought a limited number so please get your orders in quickly. The chocolate
is of very high quality and the pictures tell the Christmas story.
Either see me after church or ring or text 07505105184.
All the Christmas cards have religious pictures on them but are
still very
well designed. I also have special edition cards with a Dove of
Peace of them and a special message commemorating the start
of the first world war. Again these are first come first served.
Please use this opportunity to help people in other parts of the
world
receive a fair wage for their labour and price for their goods.
This is not
hand outs but helping people help themselves.
HARVEST WATER AID.
It was great that so many of you took up the Bishop’s challenge
to raise money for Water Aid as part of our harvest donations.
Those of us who take clean drinking water and sanitation for
granted can't imagine the difference having clean water to drink
and wash with must make. There are still some jars to come in
but we will let you know how much was raised in the next
magazine.
Cheers Helen.
