Beginning the week of February 7th, Kindergarten is full time – yay! This might be a bigger adjustment for some more than others but I know our whole class (and their teacher) is looking forward to coming to school every day. We were busy as usual in December and January with Christmas concert preparation, making Christmas ornaments with our Grade 7/8 buddies, staying inside on cold indoor recess days, enjoying hot chocolate on our PJ Polar Express Day, watching “The Secret Life of Pets” with all the K-6 students on the last day of Christmas break, enjoying Christmas and Gingerbread Man themed playing and learning centers, spending a few gym sessions skating at the rink with the help of our Grade 7/8 buddies, learning new math games, writing in our journals, taking walking field trips up town to the Co-Op and sharing special items for show and tell. Unfortunately, in January, we had to say good-bye to our classmate and friend, Harlen, who moved to Brandon with his family over Christmas holidays. Already we miss playing cars and trucks with Harlen, telling jokes with him, playing tag with him in gym and playing outside with him. Everyone in our class hopes he loves his new school and makes lots of friends! (Livia), kiss (Ethan), go sledding (Carter R.), sleep all night (Orianna), go wild (Charlee), have a snowball fight and drink hot chocolate while they skate (Myra), ring everyone’s doorbells (Carter M.), steal sweeties, kiss and go in cars (Alexis), melt (Lane), wet the bed (Tuckar), barge inside the school and do magic so everyone forgets (Valley), throw snowballs and wake the cats up (James), watch fireworks (Danielle), throw snowballs at the door (Peyton), . Who knew snowmen were so mischievous at night when everyone else is asleep! In February, the Kindergarten class is looking forward to coming to school every day just like the Grade 1s and during this transition, we will start up new home reading and alphabet bags, start a new math program on the iPads called Dreambox and continue to learn and grow through play and meaningful learning In January, we were authors once again centers. Stay tuned for a surprise Phys. Ed. program in March and April! Halle came to visit our classroom on January 19th. She is growing very quickly and is already five months old! This month’s Roots of Empathy unit focused on emotions. We spent a lot of time discussing our own emotions, and also discussed the emotions that go along with bullying. Page 6 2016 Christmas Store The 2016 Christmas Store rolled in to SCS on December 21 and 22nd. Hosted by the gr. 7&8 class, the Kindergarten to gr. 6 students had a chance to bring in change from home to purchase Christmas presents for people in their family. This year presented students with lots of great shopping options. Everyone enjoyed searching for just the right thing for their loved ones. Many students wrapped a few of their own presents, leaving the tricky ones to the Gr. 7&8 Buddies. I did find myself wondering how long it would take to peel away the layers of scotch tape covering their treasures. This year there were some exciting additions to the money donated to the Shoal Lake/Strathclair Food Bank. Several students made a special donation to the food bank to bring the total donation to $206. Thank-you to everyone who donated gently used items, wrapping paper and gift bags. See you again next year! Ms. Maguire Strathclair Christmas Concert The Strathclair Christmas concert was held at the Bend Theater on December 20. The Concert was started by Lacey Winstone and Shelby Watson welcoming everyone and by having Ms. Blair play O’ Canada on the piano. The kindergartens started the concert with a song and dance called the Blitzen’s Boogie. The K-6 performed a wonderful musical with lots of lovely solos. The Guitar Group was the first high school club that participated in the Christmas Concert over the past few years. They featured Drew Watson singing and playing, alongside Brooks Watson, Lucas Pedersen, and Mr. Check on their guitars. The grade 1-3s did a very well done musical skit about Christmas Eve. Ms. Chwaluk and Ms. Blair did a beautiful duet to the song “Where are you Christmas.” The grades 4-6 did a fun and lively play called ‘The Red Carpet.’ The show was closed by Ms. Blair playing ‘God Save the Queen’, ‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas.’ And ‘Here comes Santa Clause.’ Children of all ages lined up to get their pictures with Santa and tell him what they wanted for Christmas. The night remained lively by all the amazing talents and the MC’s (Shelby and Lacey) jokes. There was never a dull moment on stage and everyone was always smiling and laughing. The MCs provided the crowd with jokes and singing while the acts were getting set up back stage. Overall the night turned out wonderful and fun. Also a big thanks to the crew that prepared food in the canteen! It was a wonderful day! Page 8 GRADE 5/6 DIVISION BONSPIEL Page 9 MRS. DYCK AND THE GRADE 7&8’S It is hard to believe we are almost at the end of January!! The grade 7/8’s have been busy with a variety of different activities, and learning a lot of new things. We have been very lucky to help the Kindergarten class with a here and there. In December, we spent some time making milk carton igloos, and a large cardboard gingerbread house for the Christmas extravaganza. The gingerbread house found a good home in a Kindergarten play centre. Also in December, we helped the Kinders with a few different art projects. We made popsicle sticks Christmas trees and reindeer using our hand prints. Most recently, we have started helping Miss Harrison buddy with the Kinders during their skate time at the rink! In our classroom we have also learned quite a few things as well. In ELA, both grade 7 and grade 8 finished their novel studies and made some amazing final projects. Currently, we are both working on a unit on humour and author’s craft and learning to become better writers and authors. In Science we have been looking at light and optics and have learned about the law of reflection and usefulness of different types of mirrors like car mirrors and periscopes. In Social Studies we have started looking at Ancient Egypt over the past couple weeks. In between learning about the Ancient Egyptians, each individual student is also becoming an expert in a specific ancient civiliza- tion. To display this new knowledge they are creating their own website!!! Hopefully we will be able to share these soon. Keep tabs on our classroom website for more information. Outside of our classroom, on January 19th the grade 8 boys were able to travel into Brandon, to Crocus Plains, for a trades and skills day with Mrs. Maguire. The boys went to a couple different workshops where they learned how to design their own stickers, carve their initials using wood working tools and more! The weather was so beautiful that day that the grade 7’s and I just had to go outside and enjoy the warm temperature and do a little crosscountry skiing!! Happy February Everyone!! Mrs. Dyck & the Grade 7/8’s Mrsdycksclassroom.weebly.com Page 10 MS. WRIGHT The Grade 12 students have battled their way through the semester. Who could forget Savannah’s ice cream cake, or Avery’s Grade 12 Provincial ELA exam, despite cancelled buses and closed Grandma’s apple crisp, or Chance and Alyssa’s fabulous brownies, to schools. Some students really had to endure a writing marathon to name only a few! Ms. Wright complete before the Department of Education’s deadline of Monday, January 16. Congratulations to everyone for rising to the challenge! With the exam behind them the Grade 12 students were able to concentrate on their debate unit. The debates were held on Tuesday, January 24, and Friday, January 27. Congratulations to everyone who dressed for the occasion! Nearly everyone looked very professional. The topics up for debate were “Should abortion be legal in Canada?”, “Should parents be able to ‘design’ their babies?”, and “Should doctor assisted dying be legal in Canada?” All the teams presented thoughtful arguments for and against their chosen motions. The Reading is Thinking students have now completed this course, and will be moving on to ELA 10F next semester. The skills they have learned recently have been all about research. Taking accurate notes, summarizing using notes, avoiding plagiarism, citing sources correctly, researching to find specific information, and synthesizing information from multiple sources to create your own written piece on a topic. All these skills will help them complete research projects and essays in the years to come! The Grade 10 ELA class have finished reading Of Mice and Men, and developing a facebook page for the main character of their choice; using events from the text and the characteristics, language, and personality of their character to create authentic posts and extras. Recently we have been working on reading short stories and identifying and developing the elements of fiction; and on reviewing figurative language techniques, including explaining how the use of figurative language adds to the message of a text. All the Grade 10 ELA students wrote the divisional Grade 10 ELA exam during exam week. The Home Ec. class have all completed their sewing, baking, and cooking assignments, and the (usually) lovely smells wafting from the Home Ec. room will take a short break before the class starts up again next semester. Home Ec. brought out some memorable talents this Page 11 MR. CHECK The months of December and January absolutely flew by and now we find ourselves preparing for exams and a new term here at Strathclair School. The grade 9 Social Studies class began to focus on Canada and how it relates to the rest of the world. We looked at a variety of current news articles and videos from around the world and attempted to connect them to Canada in some way. In Grade 11 History, we looked at some of Canada’s defining moments during World War 1. We also conducted a simulation that demonstrated the power of alliances in war…which resulted in some intense debate and conversation. In the aftermath, we also examined how treaties can impact all nations involved during times of conflict. The financial planning group set out on their final projects, which essentially places students in a new city with no job, no education, and only $5000.00 to their names. The challenge is to complete the project with a ‘Net Worth’ of $250,000.00. Students are able to acquire degrees, get jobs, file tax returns, check bank statements, organize their personal schedules and even invest in the stock market. This project effectively simulates what life might be like in the real world, and it seems like the students are having a fun time experimenting with planning their lives! Beside is an example of what the simulation looks like to our student. Above is a snapshot of their home during the simulation. We had a bittersweet end to the term in personal management, as many students are sad to be leaving their younger reading partners. The grade nine students were in charge of assessing the reading progress of their junior partners and also created personalized story books that put their younger buddies IN the stories. It seemed like both groups had an excellent time creating and reading these books together. Guitar club is continuing to meet every Thursday for rehearsals, and we are currently learning a song by the Lumineers. The Magic The Gathering Club is also going in full force. Magic is a strategy game of mythical beasts and powerful wizards and there are many students currently playing! The student council is going to be launching a fundraiser called ‘Threads of Hope’ at the start of the new semester. ‘Threads of Hope’ are bracelets made by Filipino families which are then sent to various groups to sell. Half of the proceeds will benefit our council directly, while the other half goes directly to the families who make the bracelets. They will be for sale during lunch hours and at other community functions going forward. Ms. Okemow Winter has rolled in and with it came some unpredictable weather from extreme cold one week to above zero conditions. This week has graced us with excellent weather and we have enjoyed some outdoor activity. Both physical education classes have enjoyed getting outside to cross-country ski we stayed on school grounds the first class and went and explored in the bush behind the town recycle bins the next class. Global issues students have been working on Take Action Projects. Several different topics are being researched and discussed. Some topics being researched are Violence in the Media, Missing and Murdered Indigenous women, the Environment and ecosystem degradation. In Indigenous studies we are learning about the seven teachings and incorporating them into our lifestyle. We are also learning about birch bark and its many uses. Christmas Classic Hockey Game The Strathclair Skyhawks went to the rink in Birtle on December 22 to cheer on their fellow classmates. Cory Mervyn played forward for the Birtle Falcons and Joe Lane played goalie for the Minnedosa Chancellors. It was a close game, each team fighting their way back. The Falcons brought home the win, Falcons 6 vs the Chancellors 3. Lacey Winstone—HAWK TALK REPORTER Newdale Christmas Concert Newdale Christmas was December 10 at the Newdale hall. Finally the Newdale 4-H club sang Christmas carols and at the end Santa came and gave treats to the boys and girls!! Michaela Kryshewsky—HT reporter Band Concert January 19 was the annual Strathclair/Shoal Lake school band concert. Directed by Ms. Chelsey Novakowski the grade 7 played two pieces and for their first performance they did amazing. The grade 8 played two pieces as well and they played like pros. The senior band played 3 pieces and they had everyone in the audience at wow. Last but currently not least we had the Jazz Band which consists of 9 students from Shoal Lake and Strathclair play “Now is the Time” which had solos from Paul Lindgren and Tyler Dalke. The last piece they played was “Jammin with Charlie” which had solos from Jenna Rysphanuk and Michaela Kryshewsky. In all the concert went very well despite having it postponed and all of the students did a fantastic job!! Michaela Kryshewsky Olympic Athlete visits SCS! January 13 we had a very special guest come to our school to talk with some of the students about being a professional athlete. Her name is Cassie Hawrysh and she is and professional athlete for skeleton. Cassie has two world cup medals, a world cup team gold, ranked 8th in the world and she was also the alternate from the Canadian team in Sochi Russia. Cassie came to talk to the students about how she got to where she was, some of the struggles that she has to go through and how she never gave up. Cassie is such an inspirational person, she makes you want to go out and do things you have never done. So from the students at SCS we thank you Cassie Hawrysh!!! Michaela Kryshewsky—HT Reporter Page 14 HAWKS GO FOR GOLD! On December 1, 2016, the SCS Varsity Girls volleyball team headed to Grandview, Manitoba to compete in the ‘A’ volleyball provincials. There was a total of 10 teams participating from all over the province in an intense three day competition. The previous provincial champions and number one ranked team, the Elton Sabres, were at provincials. The girls knew that it would be a tough weekend of playing and they worked hard in every game they played. It was a very emotional weekend for everybody, but the team stuck together until the very end. a close game. The game went to three sets and sadly Rivers came out on top this time. The scores were very close, 17-25, 25-17, and 10-15, and it was an exciting game. The next game was at 11:00am against St. Paul’s. The girls came out swinging and really played hard that game, winning both sets 25-23 and 25-18. Madi got player of the game. The last game of the day was definitely an exciting one as the girls faced Boissevain. This game had fans out of their seats cheering! The match went to three sets, resulting in a win for the Skyhawks with scores 25-23, 16-25, and 15-12. Sydney got player of the game. After playing an intense three games that day, the team was now sitting at two wins and two losses in their pool. Only the top four in their pool could advance, which sent the Rivers team home. The Skyhawks placed 2nd in their pool, meaning another early game the next day against Glenboro, but they had the rest of the day off. The group met at Pizza Hut later for a team meal, and then went for ice cream after. Saturday was another early morning with a 9:00am game against Glenboro. All season these two teams have been very evenly matched, and everybody knew it was going to be a good game. The Skyhawks played an amazing game and won after some pretty close sets with scores of 23-25, 25 -23, and 15-6. Madi got player of the game again. The girls now advanced to the semi-final game against Rosenort at 1:15pm. During this game, Sydney hurt her knee and was unable to finish the game. This was an emotional time for the team and they ended up losing that match with some close sets, scores being 20-25, 29-27, and 10-15. The Skyhawks now had one final game at 3:30pm against, surprisingly, Elton. Before the game, the girls had a team huddle as Sydney wasn’t going to be playing because of her injury. Saturday was turning out to be a very emotional day. The girls played hard, Thursday at 9:00am, SCS held a pep rally for the team but lost the third place game to Elton 14-25 and 15-25. The team had a long and emotional talk after the game, and said before they left for Grandview at 9:30am. Shortly after 9:30am, the team headed to Grandview. Ms. Okemow K-6 Christmas Play The grade 1-6 class went to Hamiota to watch a play put on by some of the students. The play was A Christmas Carol and it’s about a guy named Scrooge who hated Christmas. Then on Christmas he is visited by three ghosts, the ghost of Christmas past, present and future. In the end Scrooge learns to love Christmas. Some of the kids I talked to said that they loved the play and they would like to watch another one.
