ELV Holiday Light Contest
The first annual ELV Holiday Lights Contest is underway. It is great to see so many homes being festively
decorated for the season and we all look forward to seeing the additions over the next few weeks as we look
to crown the winner!
As a reminder, the contest will have winners from two categories: “Clark W. Griswold” and “Classical”. The “Clark W. Griswold”
award will be bestowed upon the homeowner whose display most lights up the neighborhood. The “Classical” award will be the
display that captures the spirit and beauty of the holiday overall. Taste and beauty trumps volume in this category.
Judging of displays visible from the street will commence sometime after December 15.
Viewing will occur sometime between the hours of 7 pm and 11 pm.
The winner of each category will be featured prominently in the ELV newsletter.
Additionally, each winner will receive a plaque/trophy to commemorate their triumph,
which will be passed on to next year’s winner.

The Internet is a wonderful thing (mostly) and it’s nice to have an answer
only a “Google” away, but sometimes it’s nice to have things down on paper.
The ELV Phone Directory is one of those things that’s nice to have on paper.
A new directory will be published this spring, but we know it needs a lot of
updating as many of you have abandoned your land lines and gone
exclusively to using cell phones. Please contact Andrea with your complete

or you can check the box on the dues invoice below and provide your new
phone number there. Thank you.
Thank you to all who have raked leaves out of
their street gutters and our lakes. It is very
important to keep organic matter out of our lakes.
For those of you whose trees have yet to drop
their leaves, please follow the great example set
by so many of our neighbors.

 Barb Polance writes: Talk about our neighbors pitching in! On our coldest

day in November with winds of 30 mph and a wind chill of 27, Pam Miller
on Pebble Lake was out there raking leaves from the lake, from her
property and that of 3 other neighbors. I couldn't believe it when she rolled
up her pants, took off her shoes and retrieved someone's paddle boat cover
from about 5 ft. of water. This is just one example of the great neighbors
and subdivision we live in. Thank you, Neighbor!!
Three entranceways to Emerald Lakes Village are in a holiday mood
through the good efforts of Gloria Mann and her son Zachary. Thank you
both for decorating the Emerald Lakes signs at Square Lake and Walker,
John R and Lyster Lane, and South Boulevard and Emerald Shores.
You Know What’s Coming
Well, it has been a wonderful fall with warmer than expected
temperatures, but we all know that it is just a matter of time before
the snow arrives. Please keep in mind that we do not want salt to
get into our lake water via street storm drains. Use kitty litter,
granular sugar, or sand on any ice on your sidewalks or driveways.
Better yet, get the snow off concrete surfaces before it turns to ice.
Hopefully, your neighbors help you out if need be, or some energetic and
enterprising youths will send in snow

Please use extreme caution when out on lake ice.
Be reminded:
 Beware of the first ice of the season. It is not
uniform in thickness.
 Stay far away from the lake drains wher e
moving water may weaken the ice.
 Snow acts as an insulator, ice beneath it may be

weak.
After ice forms solidly, a 4” thickness is safe for
general use.
IF YOU FALL THROUGH THE ICE:
Spread your weight and roll out sideways.
Use a long support to pull yourself out.
IF YOU SEE SOMEONE FALL THROUGH THE ICE:
 Call 911 immediately.
 Throw the person a life ring or a long support
(e.g. hockey stick, tree limb, broom) to pull
them out. Or toss them 2 screwdrivers that they
can jab into the ice to help pull themselves out.
 Lay down, spread your weight on the ice and
reach out to the person in the water.
