candlesticks by Matthew Boulton & John
Fothergill, Birmingham, 1773, after a design
by James Wyatt, (1746-1813), a rival of
Robert Adam, the slender baluster columns
with acanthus leaf decoration below drapery
swags, with flared fluting to top and bottom
of columns, the square bases with incurved
sides, cut corners, edges chased with
guilloche bands and rosettes at each corner,
the capitals chased with stiff acanthus
leaves, detachable fluted nozzles with
petalled edges, filled wood bases, engraved
with a coronet above a crest coronet, 29.5
cm. high. The crest coronet is shared by 29
families including Baron & Earl Howe (from
1788), Earl & Viscount Waldegrave and
Waldegrave, Baron Radstock (from 1800). It
is possible that the unconventional 7-ball
coronet above the crest coronet was added
later to what was already a family piece to
mark an elevation in status/title but the
engraver made a mistake in the number of
balls depicted. Overall good condition but
some small splits/holes have worn through
on petalled edges of fluting of bases and in
the fluting itself, one detachable nozzle is
marked with makers' mark and lion passant,

very good condition. This appears to have
originally been a desk seal later converted to
a fob seal by removing the handle and
inserting a suspension loop. The original
handle was probably citrine, amethyst or
hardstone.

Peter Cross (circa 1645-1724), a portait
miniature of a gentleman called "James
Duke of York", circa 1685, signed at left side,
his flowing curly brown wig worn over a
cobalt blue cloak, lace jabot around his neck,
7.5 cm. high.Peter Cross was the son of a
Freeman of the Drapers' Company and was
probably born in London though little is
known of his early life. After winning some
important commissions, he succeeded
Nicholas Dixon in 1678 as limner-in-ordinary
to the king, Charles II. Four of his portraits
are held by the National Portrait Gallery. His
later elaborate signature appears to read
"LC" and caused confusion in the past
leading people to erroneously believe there
was a Lawrence Cross.The painting is
beginnning to lift ever so slightly at top and
bottom left from its stiff backing and would
benefit from a clean, there is very slight
curvature of the card, a saltire-shaped
scratch on the hair on left just above
shoulder and minor wear to the dark
ground at edges on both sides. "James Duke
of York" is written on the back in ink in what
is probably a Victorian hand
