From the Churchwardens
Thank you to everyone who has come along to our Annual
Parish Meetings – and thank you especially to newlyelected members of our Parochial Church Councils.
We – as Churchwardens – have to make a declaration
that we will “faithfully and diligently discharge the duties of
the office of Churchwarden”; and we do so to our
Archdeacon at his Visitation to be held (this year) at
Sheen on 17 th May.
The paperwork reminds us of those duties. You may titter
– we may too – that we must “maintain order and decency
in the Church and the Churchyard, especially during the
time of divine service”; thus we are empowered to be
bouncers.
More seriously, we are told that we are officers of the
Bishop; and that Churchwardens “must use their best
endeavours by example and precept to encourage the
parishioners in the practice of true religion and to promote
unity and peace among them”.
Not a responsibility to be taken lightly – especially in a
Vacancy. And we ask for your prayers.
We still await our Archdeacon’s conclusions about an
interim appointment to our Benefice; but which we expect
before long. In parallel, our Rural Dean has asked –
through the Deanery Synod – that all PCC’s in our
Deanery think about the options for Future Ministry;
including a radical option of Team Ministry as well as
revisiting previous proposals to modify Benefice
boundaries as and when possible.
Of course, all our PCC’s will want to contribute to that
discussion. And which we must do carefully and
prayerfully.
But, in the meantime, our Christian Mission must not be
put on hold.
Which is why we are asking you to support this month’s
Christian Aid appeal. Christian Aid doesn’t just tackle
poverty but challenges its causes, and it is among the
charities which collectively make up the Disasters
Emergency Committee.
You should get a collection envelope with, or soon after,
this newsletter. Please contribute – and, if someone
doesn’t come to collect your envelope, please bring it to a
Church service or give it to your Churchwarden. Also we
have a special service on 8th May at Alstonefield at which
you can find out more about the work of Christian Aid –
and followed by a late morning “Big Brekkie” in Church.
More details elsewhere in this newsletter.
For Prayer – from the Registers
Please let your Churchwarden know of anyone in special
need of prayer. We will do what we can to help – and with
complete confidentiality.
This month we remember and pray for the family and
friends of Marian Belfield, whose ashes were interred in
the Churchyard at St Peter’s Alstonefield on 2nd April
2016.
May they know the deep peace of Christ
We look forward to the marriages of:

Simon Flynn and Hannah Dexter at Ilam on
28th May.
 Adam Jacques and Adele Snook at Butterton on
28th May.
We pray for their happiness together.
Thought for the Month
This month, we celebrate Pentecost – and which is seen
by some Christians as the “birthday” of the Church.
In Acts Chapter 2, we are told: “ And when the day of
Pentecost was fully come, they [the Apostles] were all with
one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a
sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it
filled all the house where they were sitting. And there
appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it
sat upon each of them. And they were all filled with the
Holy Spirit, and began to speak with other languages, as
the Spirit gave them utterance.”
Peter and the others then began to preach the Gospel –
hence the “birthday” of the Church.
But the word “Pentecost” did not, originally, have anything
to do with the Holy Spirit. Pentecost was a Jewish festival.
In Hebrew, the word was Shavuot meaning the Festival of
the Weeks – Shavuot being a plural of week or seven; and
this festival was celebrated seven weeks after Passover.
Greek-speaking Jews, however, gave it the name
Pentecost – meaning fiftieth day.
And we celebrate Pentecost fifty days after Easter
Sunday.
So what was the Jewish feast of Pentecost? In part, it
commemorated God’s giving Moses the tablets of stone
with the Ten Commandments fifty days after the Exodus of
the Israelites from Egypt. But it was also a celebration of
the first fruits of the harvest.
Agriculture is too, part of our traditional Whitsuntide – the
other name we use for the Feast of Pentecost. Back in
mediaeval terms, your average agricultural worker (also
known as villein – and indeed with an “e”) got a week off
from working for the Lord of the Manor. Hence there were
jollities – including Whit fairs (also, for good reason, known
as Whit Ales).
Some think Whitsuntide means “White Sunday” – harking
back to wearing white clothes for Baptism. Others in
mediaeval times thought “whit” meant “wit” – as in wisdom
imparted by the Holy Spirit.
And some of us can remember Whitsuntide Walks in our
childhood when Sunday Schools trooped behind Church
banners and paraded around town – a chief (if perhaps
self-serving) virtue of which was that you got a new set of
Sunday best clothes for the occasion.
But maybe new clothes might signify something more.
The inspiration of the Holy Spirit in our own lives – and for
which we pray at Pentecost – would indeed be a real
make-over.

a cup of tea (and maybe cake?) in the courtyard or in the
market place. The coach costs £6 and can pick up from
several villages.
A popular feature of our programme, which comes back
every two or three years, is the Fun Night on 25th May,

Proposed Alstonefield Village Emergency Telephone
Scheme (VETS)
Martin Fagan, National Secretary of the Community
Heartbeat Trust, the parent organisation of VETS, has
agreed to present to the village on Tuesday 17th May at
7pm in the Village Hall. All are welcome to attend and find
out how the scheme might work here. [MH1]
The VETS scheme was originally designed to allow
someone who found a person having a suspected heart
attack to summon local assistance and the defibrillator
(having called 999). We (Meg and Rob Handscombe,
Carrie Ross, Margaret Cohen and Mick Wilcox) see it
more generally as a means of getting competent, first-aid
help to someone quickly. An ambulance can take up to
45 minutes from Stoke. First Responders are only
available about 50% of the time and can take 15 minutes
to arrive if they are in Butterton. In any case, many
emergencies mightn’t require 999 services. It is up to the
village to mould the scheme to suit its needs.
VETS is a means by which, in the event of an emergency,
a unique telephone number can be called which rings up
to 10 village volunteers’ ‘phones until one of them accepts
the call (by pressing ‘1’) to talk to whoever is ringing and
thereby respond to their ‘emergency’.
If you can’t attend the meeting but would like to know
more, please speak to one of the people named above or
see www.communityheartbeat.org.uk"

Christian Aid Week 15th – 21st May 2016
This year we are making a special effort a la Flinters (for
those of you who remember Jean and Keith). So you will
receive an envelope either with your newsletter or shortly
afterwards if delivered separately. Also there will be spare
copies in church for anyone who misses out!
Sometime during Christian Aid week a wonderful volunteer
will collect those envelopes, hopefully now filled with cash.
Please be nice to them!
If however you feel strongly and do not want someone to
collect please let me know and I will ensure we stay away!
Again you may miss out for one reason or another, in
which case please bring your envelope to a service
around that time or give to a member of the PCC.
Also please remember there is a special service at
Alstonefield, 11am on 8th May, which is an opportunity to
find out more about the work of Christian Aid.
All are welcome.

‘The Thankful Village’ produced by the Badapple
Theatre Group on Friday 22nd April was a night to
remember. Approximately 50 members of the audience
thoroughly enjoyed a superb performance by three
extremely talented actresses and John, the sound and
lighting technician. The songs were written by Jez Lowe
and the play itself was written by Kate Bramley. Some
very slick costume and scene changes had Fiona, Kaitlin
and Zoe playing the parts of Lady of the House, parlour
maid, downstairs maid, nurse and soldiers. A very moving
ending caught some of us unawares.
The Committee would like to thank everyone who
attended and those who donated prizes for the raffle.
Some donations were saved for the raffle at our

onwards in St Bartholomew's Church. See last month's

Flowers & Cleaning for May – Myrtle Alcock
Nearly the end of April already and the forecast for
tomorrow is SNOW ! But we have had some very nice
warm (as well as some cold) Spring days and the
evenings are getting much lighter.
Very pleased to see that Sylvia is out of hospital and
home again ~ we wish her a speedy recovery.
We had just one Service this month on the 3rd April with
Reg and Lily accompanied by hymn music on our
wonderful sound system…. Not too many people there in
the congregation but we enjoyed ourselves and look
forward to the next “self catering” service!
Another christening coming up on 5th June at 11am with
the Ven. John Hall, Archdeacon Emeritus, (we said we
hoped to see him back in Elkstones again….) for Lee
Cooper and Linzi’s daughter, Georgie Jane.
After that it will be “Celebrations” at the Flower Festival
on the 17th, 18th, and 19th June leading up to the Wakes
with Ashbourne Town Band on Sunday, 19th June.
Affordable Houses
The new owners of the Warslow Industrial Estate are
negotiating with the Peak Park to ease the restrictions on
the houses which were built some time ago in order to
make them available to local people at affordable prices.
The houses will be refurbished and could be ready for
occupation later this Summer if enough people register an
interest.
Preference will be given to young, first time buyers but
other local people, perhaps those wishing to downsize, will
be considered if there are not enough applications.
If you are interested, please register at
[email protected] there are further details on
the website, also lodged at “The Greyhound Inn”.

News from the National Trust, May 2016
The National Trust are contributing to
discussions between the Parish Council,
Highways and the police as to how parking and
traffic flow in Ilam village can be improved during busy
days, such as Good Friday.
Practical tasks coming up soon: Volunteers will be
repairing footpaths in Ilam Park in the coming weeks, and
the brick walls around the orchard project (by the tearoom) are being rebuilt. The strawberry plants and other
soft fruits are now planted and we look forward to the day
when we can serve cakes and puddings containing our
own grown fruit!
A task coming up soon for the volunteers is to improve the
access for walkers heading to Dovedale from Ilam village.
We hope to repair the route at the base of Bunster, with a
series of simple steps, to allow easy access from the
gateway on the road onto the main path.
Free Monday and Friday Walks: Our team of volunteer
walk leaders will be offering the free walks through the
year, weather permitting. Everyone is very welcome to
join in, there is no need to book, just meet by the visitor
centre for 11:00am start. The Monday walk is a 2hr route,
on a Friday you have a choice of a 1hr, 2hr or 3hr route.
Please be ready for stiles, slopes, mud and steps.

session in Ilam Park on 4th May, 10am to 11am. Please
reserve your free place on 01335 350503. The session will
include a warm up, instruction and a walk to practice your
skills!

series of guided day tours of Ecton mine and engine
house over the summer months. These have been
enjoyed by locals who want to know more about the mine
that made a fortune for the Duke of Devonshire in the 18 th
Century. In addition, there will be a history walk on Ecton
hill, focussing on mine history, geology and wildflowers
across the hill. For more details or to book a place call us

We mark the passing of Eb Cartlidge, we extend our
sincere condolences to his family, his wife Brenda and
children Adrian and Susan and families. We note our
appreciation for his maintenance of the lawn mowers and
collecting the petrol.
We are also sorry to hear of the untimely passing of
Christine Thompson and pass our sympathy to her family.
We are especially saddened to hear that Susan Peach is
not well, our thoughts and prayers are with her and her
family at this difficult time.
We are sorry to hear that Chris Milton has been injured
and hope that her broken ankle heals quickly and she is
back on her feet.
We welcome the new residents to Landcroft Cottage, we
hope that they will enjoy their time with us in the
Staffordshire Moorlands and wish them many years of
happiness in their home.
We note that Judith and Paul Chantler have moved
from The Old Chapel and wish them much happiness in
their new home in Hartington. Judith often did a display for
our Flower Festival.
We welcome the New Residents to The Old Chapel,
Sarah and Emma Garde and are pleased that they have
decided to ‘plant their roots’ in Warslow, we also wish
them much happiness in their New Home! Also birthday
greetings to Sarah on the occasion of her 50th. Have a
lovely day.
We welcomed Oliver Marcus Lea and Kristal Louise Lea,
Mark Lea and Rachel Gould’s children, with their family
and friends to celebrate their joint Baptism. We welcome
them both into God’s family and mark a special occasion
when siblings can enjoy this important experience
together.
We remind everyone of Pam Naden’s plant sale at the
end of the month and thank Pam and her family for their
hard work and dedication in arranging this each year to
raise funds for the church.

Defibrillator Code
The code for unlocking the defibrillator has been put on
the outside of the box. But it mayn’t be easy to see if it’s
dark – so please make a note of the code in case of need.
It is C123X.
Dog Poo Alley
The lane alongside John Wint's field
and past Andrew's cowsheds is fast
becoming dog-poo alley - which
makes strimming the verges a horrid
job. OK - so the culprits may be dogs
belonging to visiting walkers. But - if
it's possible your dog could be
implicated - please don't just blame the visitors. You can
put poo bags in the bins on the car park - it's not a big ask.
